@jeroplane1 Yeah I read that on his website too. I met him a few months ago but I think that was before he decided to "play out" cus he didnt mention it. He did tell me his new restaurant is opening soon, Ill be there for sure!! He is such a nice guy too.
I loved Carnival Of Life & Recital, from then on I was a fan. Last time I saw Lee was late 70s at Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, CA (now gone). He mostly played guitar, had a chick bass player, killer show. I asked his roadie to get my pic signed but Lee crumpled it up. Guess he was mad at the record co? Next show I took a photo I had taken from the last show-he signed it. One of 3 people I ever asked for autographs from. He & his bands had the original Wall Of Sound. 2good2BForgotten.
Great recording. Saw them in '73 Springfield, Missouri. Fanfriggintastical! Love that scream, that soul, the power in the keyboard, and that Frosty, what a drum genius!
Frosty is a banger/basher - my favorite Lee Michaels stuff is on the "Lee Michaels Live" double album (vinyl) - a guy named Keith Knudson was the drummer - beautiful stuff - since deceased, and ended up playing a long time with the Doobie Brothers - what a let down - that's my understanding - correct me if I'm wrong - Lee Lives!!!
nope...you are wrong...that's Frosty on Lee Michaels LIVE.
Frosty lives in Austin and still plays as good as anybody I've ever heard!
in one of the rare Led Zep interviews with Circus magazine, Bonham cites Frosty as his favorite drummer! And a friend of mine who tour managed Robert Plant confirmed that Plant was hoping to "see Frosty play somewhere while in Austin.
NOW - listen to Frosty's solo on Lee Michaels LIVE and then listen to Moby Dick. Which record came first?
ok - I checked it out ... the record I am talking about is just called LEE MICHAELS, and was released on A&M in 1969...but it was recorded live in the studio with Frosty, which is why I got confused.
while Lee Michaels Live was released in 1973 and indeed does feature Keith Knudson on drums. oops...my bad.
still doesn't take ANYTHING away from the badass drumming of FROSTY!!!!
@papamali1 papa~ I was at the 1973 live record show. It was in Carnegie Hall on 57th Street, NYC. Keith Knudson was drumming, he left Lee and joined The Eagles (and made the big bucks). I saw Lee in I think1978 at a small venue just off of the Stanford Campus. He had his amps up to ear-splitting LOUD! I had to leave. I don't know who his drummer was at that show.
@ghahandi Knudsen was never with The Eagles —They only had one drummer back in those days —Don Henley —I think you mean "The Doobie Brothers" —Knudsen joined them around the time they recorded the "Stampede" album ('75-ish) —And, the drummer playing for Lee at that ear-splitting loud show was, most likely, Joel Larson, who was the drummer from "The Grass Roots"...
Lee Michaels Rocks! Soulful singing and can rip on the B3 when he wants to.. he used to own the restaurant Killer Shrimp in Studio City & Marina Del Rey...think he moved to Hawaii...come back Lee! We need some real musicians with real voices!!
This is the ONLY video I've ever seen of Lee Michaels and Frosty. I really wish there were more to show my students. Soulful, rocking, and inspiring ('cause it sounds like you could do it, besides it being great).
iam happy finally some video on Lee and Frosty. Im surprised there isn't more. All the concerts they did in So Cal. I saw them 11 times all over. Incredible voice and so much soul. I loved them. I wish they were still playing.
One of my greatest inspirations for playing the Hammond Organ, someday when I get the nerve up I'll do a Lee Michaels tribute show with a drummer....going to need a few months to practice for that...those are some HUGE soulful shoes you left us to try to fill Lee and Frosty!!!!
@2guysandagirl1992 Because we got the luck of growing up with video games, internet, and incredible technology, but an unfortunate derth of soul and talent.
Frosty is alive and playing with another B3 player named Mike Flanigin. They play on the weekends in the lounge above the Continental Club. He remains an incredible drummer.
Think Frosty is no longer alive; Michaels opened up a string of shrimp restaurants mostly in Southern CA, but not sure if he is still involved with them. Was maybe the loudest "band" out there in his day; the 2 of them made a glorious noise and Lee was the king of screams.
Nowadays Lee owns a restaurant in Venice Beach. I saw him when he was a headliner. Huge speaker system blasting his Hammond B3 - incredible. Long time ago, Santana was just breaking in and was the warm up band to open the show.
MAN it's been a long time since I heard Lee & Frosty. Funny that Mrcapps mentioned Van Morrison, since I get the same vibe also. You almost forget about these guys, then one of their songs come up and you say "OH YEAH!" and it just rocks your socks off. So soulful. Thanks for posting!
The original studio version of this song "No Part" was on the album "Recital"..the keyboard parts were played by Lee on the old honky tonk piano..this is equaly as cool...Frosty is so fluid and in the pocket....Lee has the coolest touch on the B3 and what a voice ...and he is easy on the eyes also....what the F happened to these guys...this was just too good!!!!!
Awesome! Thanks for posting. Lee demonstrates about every aspect of his performance abilities - a rocker - a blues guy - a little folk and lots of soul - along with beloved Frosty whose drum solos are like none else - where are you guys? I love you now as I did back then in l969+
Just plain Great. Peace and Love!!
