As a teacher in an inner city school I always thought the problem was a lack of funding, lack of parental involvement, lack of role models, poor local economy, drugs, disillusionment, poor nutrition, abuse, etc. I'm relieved to find out the problem is just me. Thank goodness.
Geoffrey Canada and his Harlem Empowerment Zone have a quarter of a BILLION dollar endowment. Let me repeat that: They have 250 million dollars. Why cant such rich PRIVATE charter school organizations do what public Boards of Education did in decades past: BUILD SCHOOLS! Schools should not have to share space; it is a recipe for educational failure. When there is money enough in Manhattan to build high income luxury rental buildings by the dozen there is money enough to build a few new schools.
