Like the smoking stuff especially, nearly every smoker has had conversations with mostly other smokers about how many non-smokers whine about smokers smoking in public. That part of the joke is not profound in any way. What is profound is how a comedian makes you find it funny through different perception.
This looks pretty damning towards Leary, but keep in mind most of these comparisons are based on current events of those times. It would be like claiming plagiarism for two comedians to make a joke about Justin Bieber looking like a lesbian today.

The first half of this particular video is vaguely similar, and I suspect anybody defending Leary here probably stopped watching at some point. But watch it through. Jimmy Fixx? Keith Richards? John Lennon? You can't just do all of a guy's talking points in one go and not get called out for it.
If you ask any real stand up comic about this topic, they will all say that leary stole bills persona, jokes, and his entire act in some cases. Now we can say with the same certainty that Hicks stole those topics from other atheist comedians before him, and forget the fact that some topics like wars, drugs and other social issues that are unique for that time frame can influence some other fallow comedians that share the scene with you!

I have nothing against Bill or Denis. To me, what matters is who delivers the best performance and who´s style I like better. I think Denis Leary is better in delivering the jokes. His annoyance towards the issues and his intensity fits the subjects better. Bill Hicks has a much slower approach in his stand up, and to me it gets a bit boring.

@corpsus1 Well, up until the Barry Manilow bit, Denis Leary steers clear enough away from directly copying Bill Hicks' comedy but he crossed the line at that point, and the Jim Fix bit is definitely a rip-off of Hicks' material. Additionally, while the smoking bit does differ, it is basically the same topic and I think Leary is just using it because he doesn't have the talent to come up with his own ideas.

I have nothing against Bill or Denis. To me, what matters is who delivers the best performance and who´s style I like better. I think Denis Leary is better in delivering the jokes. His annoyance towards the issues and his intensity fits the subjects better. Bill Hicks has a much slower approach in his stand up, and to me it gets a bit boring.

I don't think i even need to here the rest am hearing Denis Leary do the smoking cigarettes joke and round about 3.07-3.10 he evens says" Yeah Bill am gonna get some Cigarettes " Now that's interesting. But saying this ,imagine being on the circuit at the same time that Bill was? For me no excuse coz Eddie Izzard held his own! so why couldn't DL? RIP Bill Hicks
