Actually long before Cobain promoted them, they were selling. Their first 2 albums hit high in the indie charts in the UK. I think their 2nd album even hit the top ten in 1988.

@GlutenFreeBread Obviously I didnt know Kurt and cant say why he liked them, but from the biographies I read, its pretty clear that Kurt made a point of liking obscure non-mainstream bands. If the Vaselines were hugely successful, he probably would have liked another obscure band instead. Also, as a drug addict, maybe he also saw something beautiful with the lyrics ("she said she'd take me anywhere if I stay clean"). I don't know, just a thought.

But overall you have to be greatful, because ultimately Nirvana turned some attention over to The Vaselines. I mean, I know I wouldn't have found them if it wasn't for Nirvana.

While I believe Nirvana would have existed without The Vaselines, I think they would have sounded slightly deferent. Kurt Cobain had many influences The Vaselines (of course), Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Pixies, The Meat Puppets, and The Beatles.

Kurt Cobain was a huge fan of their music, stating once that "The Vaselines are my favorite songwriters in the world." I'd say The Pixies were a much bigger influence on Nirvana's songwriting. Of course, this not taking ANYTHING away from the musical prowess of The Vaselines. I'm certainly a fan of theirs.
