While I greatly admire Dawkins for his tireless advocacy of science, I believe that his confrontational approach with people of faith only strengthens their own belief, as well as their distrust in science and the scientific community. It seems to me that were he to use more tact and get religious people to examine their beliefs rationally instead of just saying they are wrong he would be more successful in converting people to science.

Dawkins doesn't make outrageous claims, he backs them up continuously (in his books). Dawkins calls Haggard on his claims. It is Haggard, who claims his version of the universe is true without any backing. That's arrogance. No reason to attempt fairness here. Haggard is a charletan.
Don't get me wrong; Haggard's is slime but the approach that Bill Maher takes, and Dawkins occasionally as well, isn't effective. When debating in a civilized manner (as these two are), it's imperative both remain respectful, lest they undermine their own arguments by being dicks.

Honest debates does not require respect for the opposing view, it requires established fact. Dawkins has that in spades, Haggard doesn't. "you don't respect me (or anyone else)" is a despicable ploy.
A transcript of this debate would look like he's being respectful, however it's his tone of voice that makes me think it was a little arrogant. Tone of voice isn't great proof; that's why I made sure to add that it's just my opinion.
Two different parties may have enormous discontent for each other, but one side cannot have an air of superiority. It may gain praise from our side (skeptics) but I fear it will give our opponents a reason to write off the entire debate before even considering it.

Dawkins doesn't make outrageous claims, he backs them up continuously (in his books). Dawkins calls Haggard on his claims. It is Haggard, who claims his version of the universe is true without any backing. That's arrogance. No reason to attempt fairness here. Haggard is a charletan.

Don't get me wrong; Haggard's is slime but the approach that Bill Maher takes, and Dawkins occasionally as well, isn't effective. When debating in a civilized manner (as these two are), it's imperative both remain respectful, lest they undermine their own arguments by being dicks.
I think Dawkins is correct and Ted's wrong, but that doesn't matter if you give the opposition a reason write you off as an asshole. Fairness is vital, even against someone like Haggard.
But that's just my opinion.

@Schragmeister I will re-word my comments. Just because Haggard is offended by being shown to be a fool doesn't make Dawkins arrogant. Haggard should have been critical thinking, not because Dawkins says so, but because that's the right thing to do (moral).
Honest debates does not require respect for the opposing view, it requires established fact. Dawkins has that in spades, Haggard doesn't. "you don't respect me (or anyone else)" is a despicable ploy.

A transcript of this debate would look like he's being respectful, however it's his tone of voice that makes me think it was a little arrogant. Tone of voice isn't great proof; that's why I made sure to add that it's just my opinion.
Two different parties may have enormous discontent for each other, but one side cannot have an air of superiority. It may gain praise from our side (skeptics) but I fear it will give our opponents a reason to write off the entire debate before even considering it.

Although I disagree about this instance, it doesn't really matter. We both agree that solid claims using evidence shouldn't even be considered offensive. The only opinion I want to make clear to you is that we should make our claims humbly without intentionally belittling the opponent for it's own sake. If we have evidence, we must present it, regardless of who takes offense, but offending someone should never be a goal; that's the point I present to you. Sorry I wasn't as clear as I thought.
