As much as I like this movie, there's no denying how freaking wierd it is. It bounces back and forth from Hogen's Heroes style comedy to blanket parties, people being killed, and a character ment to represent Holocaust victims.
@cmania26 originaly feeling gay meant feeling happy (wikipedia: "The term gay was originally used to refer to feelings of being "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy"") so they are not singing about homosexuality
@crazy031089 Yeah. I wish it was still associated with talking about being happy and carefree. Now it's so stuck in people minds as the term for homosexuality that we don't use that word for its original meaning anymore.
@crazy031089 The term "gay" as happy, etc was commonplace and used in songs as far along as the 1960s. In the standard American lexicon, it was used predominantly to mean those things as well. I recently heard an FDR speech where he used it. Don't know when / how it took the alternate meaning so thoroughly. Just goes to show how language is ever evolving.

@Ribulose15diphosphat its not a parody its a story about American Prisoners of War in Germany during World War 2. they are just singing a song to keep the motivation up :)
@BigSmoke2222 they probably did, have you seen the movie the battle of the bulge? cause in it the Germans sing this song and I guess its like patriotic to them so they sing it when the go to battle in the movie. but yeah they probably did sing to keep the motivation up.
@BigSmoke2222 well they (the german troops) sing a patriotic german song in the movie "the battle of the bulge". If you want to see the video clip of the song, search on youtube: "Panzerlied Scene From Battle of the Bulge" and it should have the song in it.
John Irvin's got this one film planned called "Red Gold" about Italian POW's taken to North America. Dunno if it's gonna be made or not, but it would definitely be a new angle to see the war from.
@Lamporre My great uncle actually worked at a PoW camp here in Canada and many of the Germans were happy to stay there. Many even returned to Canada after the war. Most were all well treated and fed and could work in the farms or lumber camps. It is something not very well known either but Canada actually had over 30,000 PoW's mostly from Britain out of fear in case of invasion they would be let out.
There's a Canadian book called "The Other Side of the Bridge", part of the story set around the Second World War. Two of the characters are German POWs working on a farm in northern Ontario. It was one of my favourite parts of the story to see them interact with the main character, and how they slowly begin to really trust each other and communicate.
@Prairielander ,My 93 year old uncle Arnold spent 27 months in German prison camps after being captured in N.Africa and he's still alive. He loved this movie but don't mention Rudebacher soup to him, because the Germans fed them turnips and potato e peels to keep them healthy.By the way the German Plant(Peter Graves)just died recently and his brother James Arness (Gunsmoke) still is alive.
Does anybody know who sang this in the 60's or early 70's? My brother had it on a 45 but I can't find that version on youtube. Theirs another Cival War song from that era also I can't think of the name, they sing about chasing the other side and using a gator for a cannon :)
@Smiley6669 I found 1 of the songs I was looking for, "Battle of New Orleans, In 1814" by Johnny Horten, I was only off by about 150 years thinking it was a Civil War song but I haven't heard it in close to 30 years.
@Klauserl1977 Stalag 17, the whole movie is posted on youtube in 10 minute segments, I remember watching it years and years ago, I'll watch it again when I get time.
I'd like to pose a question. Did all of you realize when you saw this scene that he was the spy, or did you think he was trying to mess up the real spy's "mail system"? Just wondering...
@davebex13 Yeah, I knew when I saw the scene that Price was the real spy. This is probably my favorite scene from the film, too...the irony of it all!
@davebex13 very good question imho... it has been ages so I can't remember properly, but the guy seems to shiny and I guess I thought he was trying to find the spy..or both ways..
Stalag 17 is a classic! I am only 16 and this is one of my favorite movies ever! The great escape was great but I like this movie alot more. William Holden brought so much to this movie! Some of my friends say its gay to like black and white movies but I dont care this movie is just too great! Oh and ANIMAL RULES!!!
I've said this before but it bears repeating. Peter Graves does a STELLAR acting job in this scene. Just enough, no dialogue and we really get it. Really cool collected job in an awesome film! Look how he follws them back to the table and matter of factly and dilliberately yanks the cord out if the loop. Great
sadly, they don't make movies like this anymore....an actual story with great acting...sorry kids, no explosions, no special effects....this movie would be tough to remake, ...but if anyone could ,it would have to be Clint Eastwood....i could see Matt Damon in the William Holden part and Leonardo DiCaprio in the Peter Graves part
@reverent1993 The guy price is the rat who had been snitching on the men and the lamp is the flag for the mail if there a loop in the cord it means incoming mail if its down there is no mail
My teacher showed me this movie a couple weeks ago I have to say it is one of the most exhilarating movies I have ever seen in my life so far besides 300. P.S. SPARTANS FTW!
As one whom has lived a time & times, I tell you, you wont be pleased when Johnny comes marching home….. For Johnny will march away down one road, but return “changed” and return if so, up another road, changed, by experience, never to march away again.
Thom in Scotland. {There is no place like home.} a word from the wise.
@jcinla76 Steven Fry and Hugh Laurie parodied it back in the late 80's - a full featured film, not a clip or sketch. Never say no-one would dare, because they will.
@jcinla76 they fucking better not remake, we got too many crappy remakes already and William Holden will come out of his grave to light a cigar on your face and kick your ass.
I have this film on DVD. Wonderful film. When I watched this scene, I watched this prisoners sing, and yet I never paid attention to Peter Graves acting in this scene. A few days after he died, I watched the film again. And I paid attention to P.G. in this scene. His acting was brilliant in this scene. I couldn't believe how I hadn't noticed this scene before. Wonderful acting. May he rest in peace.
RIP Peter Graves. He passed away today from sudden heart attack after collapsing. He would have been 84 this week on March 18. He is mostly notable for his role on Mission: Impossible! (the TV series and its revival) and the pilot captain in the Airplane! movies.
@VRichardsn Yeah I was real sad too. What was strange is that before he died, I was thinking about this movie and that he was one of the last ones from that movie still alive (in fact I thought he was the only one still alive, but there are still a few alive). However, he was the second to last of the major actors from the film. Richard Erdman is now the last member of the main cast (he'll be 85, come June).
Gil Stratton died 2 years ago at 86. The others died over 20 years ago.
The Die Hard version is a variant on this song titled "The Ants come marching home". Music sheet is very close.
Man, the flamers just dont know what to flame anymore. I guess its tough having to like that uncle who saves your ass every two seconds (militarily or ecenomically) and then have to tolerate their people. Anyways, back on planet earth ... hehehehehe
yes in fact they do that, ofcourse one must understand that the real defenition of gay means happy, not homosexual, that second meaning was added much later
@jdmifsud14 This happy guy came into my grandmothers work place years ago and she told him she thought he was a very gay fellow, she meant it as a compliment but he took it as an insult and explained the new meaning of the word gay.
@Smiley6669 yeah times change, unfortunately everyone is familiar with the word "gay" as being homosexual and not "gay" as in happy and cheerful (not being homosexual)
When Johnny Comes Marching Home is an extremely well known patriotic song, so I would be shocked if it wasn't already quite familiar to you (unless your really young or from overseas). Its a pro-federal government patriot song from the civil war.
These words are not enough to express this movie: EPIC BEAST BOSSS AWESOME

However, he was the second to last of the major actors from the film. Richard Erdman is now the last member of the main cast (he'll be 85, come June).
Gil Stratton died 2 years ago at 86. The others died over 20 years ago.

why is this more popular in germany and sweeden than in the US? do sweeds and germans really like a song not in their language so much?
GrayEyesWorld 2 years ago
We love great music. We dont care what language its in. Just as long as the music and song is good.

I love this song. It was this movie that made me like the song in the first place. :)
Unfortunately, I don't think too many others appreciate it, but that's just my opinion.
Also, this is one of my favorite scenes of the movie.

Its an old Irish song, "Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye". Bastardized over the years into this.

by " Johnny" do they mean America? like "Johnny America"
jdmifsud14 2 years ago 2
Old Civil War tune...sung by both sides during the war. "Johnny" being any soldier.
Great Scene. One of my favorite movies

Johhny is reference to John Rourke, husband of Patrick Gilmore's sister.

Its a civil war song. It's expressing populations longing for the return of their friends and relatives who were fighting.

Does anyone know where to find this song with chorus or a name of it included the chorus (older version).
by all that is right and fair you american guys have the best military song and so forth!

Anyways, back on planet earth ... hehehehehe

I see this movie when was a child, and this song is like brilliant in my memory

Do they really say "And we will all feel gay when johnny comes marching home"?
OKStudios 2 years ago
yes in fact they do that, ofcourse one must understand that the real defenition of gay means happy, not homosexual, that second meaning was added much later
D3m0n7x 2 years ago 5
yes and back then gay meant happy not homosexual.
jdmifsud14 2 years ago 66
@jdmifsud14 This happy guy came into my grandmothers work place years ago and she told him she thought he was a very gay fellow, she meant it as a compliment but he took it as an insult and explained the new meaning of the word gay.
Smiley6669 1 year ago
@Smiley6669 yeah times change, unfortunately everyone is familiar with the word "gay" as being homosexual and not "gay" as in happy and cheerful (not being homosexual)

When Johnny Comes Marching Home is an extremely well known patriotic song, so I would be shocked if it wasn't already quite familiar to you (unless your really young or from overseas). Its a pro-federal government patriot song from the civil war.
