looks like you are pretty close to the trees. what happens when you lose the lift? It looks like all trees around there. Can you fly like this for 400 miles? what time of year is the best season? nice video! what are you flying?
Hi - flying an ASW-20B Glider - running on two ridge systems in video - one goes about 80 miles and has a valley that's very landable - the other is about 60 miles or so and not so landable. ridges are separated by 15 miles unlandable terrain. wind is blowing perpendicular up these ridges at 20-25 knots - we weren't worried about the lift quitting - the wind would have to quit - forecast was for solid winds all day. needed 2 thermals to 4000 msl for two jumps. Season goes all yr in Tennessee
Now this is fine living - none of this sitting on the couch, growing fat and mentally weak. Get out there and live. I'm 88 years old and still kick ass..
Hello tb, we are actually searching for a good place east of the Smoky Mountains (East Tennessee) where we could break the State Altitude Record. Earlier this year a colleague flew his Schweizer 1-26 in the Mt Mitchell wave (also part of the Smokys) and maxed out at 22,000 ft but unfortunately he took off in North Carolina. Gruss, EL PS: Your youtube videos flying the Gap are very nice also!
Hello Torsten, the TN State Altitude Record currently is at 15,300ft. This record has been set in 1987 and to my knowledge nobody seems to get even close to breaking it. As you may know most of the state is pretty flat with the only mountains along the eastern side of the State. Happy New Year, Werner
You the people I always see gliding over Pikeville? =-)

looks like TN is a reasonable alternative to Switzerland :-) Do you guys get waves there, too?

Thanks, Werner. Good luck with breaking the State Altitude Record - how high do you have to climb for that, btw?
cheers
Torsten
