@ceira7 it's a sad fact that music journalists are no better than any other kind, very lazy. So while in no way decrying Joy Division, the Sound of Young Scotland made a massive impression on a lot of us in those days that still lasts. Shame they're all not still active, or more active, at least.
If they hadn't have broken up,(musical differences ?), Franz Ferdinands would have to say sorry for nicking, wholesale. Lubricate Your living Room, you know you want to.
really funky dancey.Like this so much.thanks for Propaganda puttin some money in these gys pockets;Wasnt it originally done by Orange Juice? little confused. You recognize it immediately even w the jangly guit over funky bass
i also far prefer propaganda's version though they're almost like different songs apart from the lyrics. i like both bands but am a much bigger fan of propaganda. claudia brucken's voice on that track is awesome! - and the arrangement!!
alway thought these guys should have swapped their approach with Orange Juice. Their label-mates on Postcard. Orange Juice were too desperately pop and these guys were too selfconscously poo-faced - now if it were the other way around, maybe they both would have done more than they actually did.

As such, surely both would have done exactly what the other one did anyway? I'm trying to follow your argument here.
I wont debate anymore because we clearly see things differently. Just note I have read countless articles and books on the genre. I base all my musical ideals upon Pere Ubu, and I own over five thousand albums a good portion of which are from said genre. I pretty much consider myself a self taught expert on the genre. I admit that you are knowledable, but at this point its just semantics and we are basically arguing nothing in its own right.
Yeah I guess you're right...at the end, we all have different views on the subject and there is no way of knowing the truth. You make up your own definition based on the very few resources out there of the subject and then you have to fill the blank spots yourself.
Well, I've got to admit I've been into the genre since 2006 and I'm actully 16 but I'm pretty interested in the subject...I do appreciate your knowledge as you seem you own many of albums of the post-punk era but It's really hard for me to get a hold of albums or material of the era....I also wished I could interview and get to meet bands of the era so I could get to know the truth about this info.
I do live in Colombia...so it's pretty hard, barely anyone knows about the subject, probably the only post-punk popular right now is Joy Division because of Control and hipsters that have recently discovered it.
I mean, post-punk arrived only 10 years ago through some original manchester casettes of Joy Division that spread through this region here in Colombia called Cali...don't know the whole story
No-Wave was a type of underground art based music primarily out of NYC. No-Wave is not dissimilar to noise, and was influenced more by art and jazz. It applied the same DYI free spirit that defined Post-Punk and also the punk era. Notable No-Wave bands are DNA, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, and The Residents. Many modern day Indie bands were inspired by No-Wave including Blonde Redhead who coined their name after a DNA track.
As I stated earlier. The term New Wave is often used by Americans to describe synth music, or often linked to New Romantics esque pop music. New Wave is a much broader term than you are thinking, it could be used to describe a multitude of music that in essence arent entirely one specific thing. Its the same as Post-Punk. Post-Punk is the mother of all sub genres after punk, because they all used the same ideals and ran in different directions.

Post-Punk is the mother of all sub genres after punk, because they all used the same ideals and ran in different directions.
Another point. Post-Punk was more of an experimental ideal, as opposed to a distinct sound. Throbbing Gristle (an early industral group) was just as Post-Punk as Mission of Burma or say Josef K. New wave, No Wave, and New Romantics are 2 sub genres of Post-Punk as were early industrial acts (although now industrial has come of its own, and has its own sub genres now). Post-Punk is as its name applies, its the free spirited cousin of the original punk ideal. Debating further is just semantics.
Also New Wave is mostly an American Term to describe much of the music that was coming out of the UK from the late 70s through out the 80s. I.E. a sub genre of Post-Punk.
Also fucksticks that say "Why classify this? Why put a label on such and such" are generally pretentious cunts that I wouldnt waste my time with. I wouldnt let it bother you. I mean how can you properly describe something without using the terms that define the subject that is being discussed?
music just evolves from the past orange juice and josef k both used elements of velvet underground and thats all good! ferdinand etc , keep the music rolling along!
I have recently got into josef k, and i heard a lot of their live recordings, it's timeless, but what i do think is crap is when people slag of interpol and the strokes for suposedly having this agenda where they are ripping josef .k. Interpol have over the last five years produced some of the most thrilling post punk and given the genre a sense of rejunvenation.
i really dont know why everyone is sayin screw franz ferdinand and interpol. cause they were heavily influenced by original post punk. they arent trying to be like them, their sound is just based off of the original
why does everyone confuse new wave with post-punk...they're not the same thing! and I also hate the ones who say "oh, they can't fit into a genre...you're an idiot for calling them post-punk blablablabla..."
So what if I do? I do have the need to classify my music and if you got any problems with that, you can shove it!
Yeah, well...I see some Devo songs on their debut as new wave and others more post-punk (ex. the new-waveness of Jocko Homo contrasting to the post-punk version of Satisfaction). But you do have a point joanofmarc, Devo and Talking Heads mix both genres at times to the point it's impossible talking of both...but some people do confuse the work of JD with new wave...sigh
I think you are just a slight bit confused on your terminology. Maybe you are placing proto punk groups like Roxy Music into the New Wave genre or something, but New Wave didnt properly come about till the late 70s. I think you should read "Rip it up and Start again" and "From the Velvets to the Voidoids" to fully understand.
First of all, New Wave and Post-punk derivated from Punk...yes I have read fragments from Reynold's Book and he puts it in a very confusing way...he puts Post-punk and New Wave as the same thing when Post-punk was absoultely more different and experimental than commercial New Wave.
And late seventies? New Wave is not only primitive synth-punk rock, what about The Strangler's album back in the 76? What about X-Offender back in the 76?, Talking Heads 77', XTC's 3D EP (1977 and which I own)
The term was used as early as 1977, I don't know if you're referring to New Wave being generated back in 79 because it did generate earlier...and it was used by the head of Sire Records so he could commercialize bands like Blondie in an easier way and that was back in the 76'. Post-punk generated after year zero (though there are exceptions with Pere Ubu, Wire and The Fall) in the 78', with Siouxsie, PiL, Magazine, Wire, Pere Ubu, The Fall, The Cure, Cabaret Voltaire and etc.
What you listed is just an example of what YOU personally consider to be New Wave. Many people consider Talking Heads, and XTC's early work to be punk, but that doesnt mean that it is. The term New Wave didnt even exist in 76, and generally the first band to be considered Post-Punk is Public Image ltd. Not saying that the sound and ideals didnt exist before then/them, but it simply wasnt definable. Also I think you are taking the terms too literally.
Well...the post-punk term didn't even exist by the time PiL's debut album and the same as New Wave...it just begun to be used on the late 70's and sometime it crossed with New Wave and some bands as Joy Division or Orange Juice had been described as New Wave rather than Post-punk, but as time passes the two terms have been separated and defined even more and more...
New Wave by example that you have listed is just a term coined by a record president to market something. Its not so definable as you are thinking that it is. There is no distinct sound to describe Post-Punk as there is no distinct sound to describe New Wave. They are broad terms. Cabaret Voltaire is Post-Punk as is Talking Heads. but they are also Industrial, and New York Punk respectively. "sorrrrrryyyy for laughing, there's too much happening" classic lyric. yeah Franz Ferdinand are heavily influenced by them with the lyrical style and jangly guitars but Josef K will remain the original and better sounding band.
Funny, to me this is more what Interpol is trying to do than Franz Ferdinand. Both remain second rate copies, but Interpol was the first "sound alike" which came to mind.
One might be surprised that original groups like Belle and Sebastian were influenced by Josef K. If you have Franz in mind with such a statement one may agree, but it is a general statement as a whole in regards to everything that is biting on the Post-Punk style nowadays. You gotta start somewhere, and what better place than Josef K?
I dont think that those who claim to be inspired by Josef K are superficial and empty as a whole, but rather that music in general has taken a turn for the worse. Mainstream wise we could argue that things have lost a deeper meaning and originality is lacking, but many inspired by Josef are there for the right reasons.
When you see this you realise how empty and superficial all the bands that claim to be 'inspired' by it are. I've got nothing against these bands but they seem pretty gutless. I'm totally blown away by this.
Josef K were the best. Paul Haig went on to do some great solo stuff too, worth checking out his Rhythm of Life stuff but its totally different from this though.
that was pretty much my first thought when i recently heard josef k for the first time, although i wouldn't say "ripped off" exactly - alex kapranos is quite an inventive songwriter and there's enough about franz ferdinand to distinguish them from even their more obvious influences.
I wouldn't say FF have new ideas, but that they're good at working with old ones. Unlike some of their contemporaries. Listening to modern stuff on the radio is like a who's who of stuff going back even before I was born.

I adore Josef, but I cant deny the fact that the bassist looks a awful lot like John Mark Karr.

if there weren't franz ferdinand, people would forget about Josef K. Franz always mention Josef K as their great inspiration.

Obviously fantastic - but this version misses off my fave bit when the second guitar comes in at the end

Josef K were the best. Paul Haig went on to do some great solo stuff too, worth checking out his Rhythm of Life stuff but its totally different from this though.

that could be the geezer from Franz Ferdinand on guitar. FF ripped this off big time!

franz ferdinand sucks so bad. they sound like house music with guitars.

"FF ripped this off big time!" You know I've written the same thing in the same words - how weird is that? FF also ripped off Gang of Four.

that was pretty much my first thought when i recently heard josef k for the first time, although i wouldn't say "ripped off" exactly - alex kapranos is quite an inventive songwriter and there's enough about franz ferdinand to distinguish them from even their more obvious influences.

I wouldn't say FF have new ideas, but that they're good at working with old ones. Unlike some of their contemporaries. Listening to modern stuff on the radio is like a who's who of stuff going back even before I was born.
