@iamtony49 I too had a Roman ancestor. The only thing I know about him is that he was in the army of the 2nd Legion, I believe. I was introduced to the Roman World during the 7th grade of Middle School. Ever since then I was fascinated by how Roman ruled the ancient world.
S.P.Q.R. the romans shouldnt have lost their empire their heritige and their way of life my ancestors far back to rome were part of the julii family where caesar and octavian and the rest of the julian emperors were from but god i wish i was alive then and a soldier or general or someone who could make a difference
And when did the concept or idea of Italy come to be? if Carthage was part of the Roman empire why dont we call it Italy (today)? why dont we just call it Italy and not Africa...
Definitely check out Plutarch's Lives of the Noble Romans, since he is such an oft cited source for modern day presentations of Rome. Also, Caesar: Life of a Colossus is wonderful. Although Caesar is the primary focus, it provides ample detail about the surrounding culture to make it a worthwhile read even if only trying to understand general Roman society better. It also demonstrates, despite efforts of some historians to the contrary, the utter brilliance of the magnificent Julius Caesar.
@Eternal1Truth ha thats a joke america is the most powerful country in the world just like rome is the most powerful empire the diffrence is america doesnt kill people to gain presteage and power
@903harman I agree but for us our enemy is China. I will predict with the continued explosion of that population they will begin to see themselves as THE world power and will attempt to get us dominate The U.S. This will cause a major world war and then end civilization as we know it probably before the end of the century - that will be the fall of THIS empire.
many thousands. Crassus took advantage. GENERAL POMPEY fought under GENERAL SULLA and was given the title of "MAGNUS" or GREAT by Sulla himself. Also, GENERAL JULIUS CAESAR was pardoned by SULLA despite the family rivalry because JULIUS CAESAR's family was part of and with Marius' family. BTW CRASSUS later was defeated fighting the Parthians in an effort to keep up with Caesar and Pompey. Again not a bad documentary, but please don't skimp out on details.
@imperiumiv Couldn't agree more about the battle scenes! They all look the same, and boring, boring, BOOOORING!!! I'd love to hear more personal info on the emperors, their families, and political surrounding... But still thanks a lot for uploading this!
@KenCaesarXL Any Youtube videos, or books you can recommend to someone with a VERY basic and general knowledge of the Roman Empire? Thanks much in advance!
@TheAngelRussie Hey, sorry, took forever to get back to you on this, been gone. Yeah, wow, try any of the ancient texts by the ancient authors, translated. Also, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon, a classic. Also, A History Of Rome, by Marcel Le Glay, those are all favorites. Try also Caesar Against the Celts, by Ramon Jimenez. These are but a few, I've just picked up a lot from various texts, and also from writings by the ancient authors.
First off, its not a bad documentary, but these guys have completely skipped over VERY important events, focusing only on Crassus, Pompey and then Caesar. That is wrong. Crassus was NOT an experienced general, he was a rich man who gained profit by buying up real estate from the rich people who were killed under the proscriptions of the dictator and general SULLA. GENERAL SULLA was 1st under MARIUS, then became a rival, and took ROME. He PURGED ROME, murdering
The Gauls are not a new enemy, Gallic tribes had in fact pillaged Rome itself several centuries before and this was one of the reasons for the fanatical Roman want for conquering and subjugating Gallic lands.
It's not archaic and esoteric knowledge, the history channel is again famously incompetent at detailing history accurately. I suggest people to read Gibbons though lengthy far more accurate than this showy piece which lacks in substance.
This documentary has high production values but is very historically inaccurate, first of all the Roman soldier of 100BC is not wearing the Lorica segmentata, the fall of the Roman Empire was not 100 years but on the scale of two or three centuries in which the legions were made up more and more of barbarian tribes who were by the late Roman Empire not as well assimilated into the Roman culture and the fact that Rome's political unity had long since past among many other reasons.
@ImaginedWriter I completely agree with you, and also they skimped out on many details, which I have posted. Good post, for those who have read history both from the ancients and newer books, its blatently obvious that much was skipped over or merely skimmed over lightly.
ah, yes the most dominant country in ancient times conquering and defeating powerful countries but quickly fell due to wrong decisions and Deaths of Great emperors. (I wonder what would have happened if the assassination of Julius Caesar was not done.....?)
@totalvvar ....that's just your opinion, you forget that the Senate was made up of many men much older than Caesar who were revered for their experience and wisdom. So you saying he was old is really just a relative term. Was he old compared to a teenager,,,sure he was. Was he old compared to a senoir member of the Senate...not hardly.
@totalvvar ...Wrong again. 50 is now widely known as the New 40, 60 as the New 50 and so on. People living longer with better medicine, better nutrition, just better overall health. The Romans were certainly at the pinnacle of health and medicine and eating well in the time of their power. Wealthy, powerful Romans especially were well cared for and lived a long, healthy life on a regular basis. I can assure you that you would be no match for a 65 or 70 yr. old Roman with a sword.
@superhornet69 likes, good wildlife and forests (well nature) lots of lakes and good weather most of the time
dislikes: most laws. You get here from raping a 15 year old girl about ½year of prison (if you're a first timer) and torturing a hamster you're going to be in prison for a year
@JayEmStyles Most likely just the transition from Republic to Empire would have taken a little longer. Ironically, his assassination by the "liberators" did nothing except speed up the process by continuous civil war until Augustus came out on top.
