the best bassist I have seen live is Stanley Clarke. I still love the Isle of wight CD by the who and the live at Leeds stuff. That is just amazing. The Ox was just great!
I have seen Ron Carter , Ray Brown, and other greats too.
@taariqtaariq I'm a fan of Stanley, who couldn't fall in love with School days.
I've Stanley live in club in Boston, Ma. Amazing tone, but what stood out was his ability to go from his small scale Alembic to a full size upright and play it with such ease.
Depends on ones point of view I guess on who's King of the Hill"
For sheer power, I'd go with Entwistle.
Technique and command,, I'll get flack for this for sure,, but I can't recall seeing anyone do what Sheehan can do with 4 strings.
True story...John Entwistle took a Harrod's carrier bag to a garage and had one of his Rolls Royces spray-painted Harrod's green because he liked the colour. THAT's a fucking rock and roll star!
There is no best......only different! You do hafta admit, his playing is unique, a style not utilized by current bassists. What did he use as a pick, a silver dollar or buffalo nickel?!
Victor Wooten is the most technically talented bassist, but Entwistle revolutionized the instrument from a strictly rhythmic time-keeper to an instrument with a separate melodic identity. Victor would have had no inspiration to do any of the things that he did without John, and the others that followed him.

@shomanca Thats a sensible opinion, though i disagree with it, if you want a overrated bassist look at cliff burton. John Entwistle used techniques on bass that Eddie Van Halen got famous for. John entwistle was using two hand techniques before Halen ever was. Leo Fender invented the Bass guitar, but John Entwistle taught the world how to play it. Ask noteable bass players like Chris Squire, Lemmy, and Billy Sheehan, they all say that John was the best bass player in rock n roll history.
@RedRicky590 a lot of people mistakenly call Entwistle's typewriter technique tapping, but it had nothing in common with what Eddie Van Halen and others do. Entwistle was an early innovator in temrs of his trebly tone, and he influenced a lot of others, like Chris Squire and Billy Sheehan (although Sheehan's main influence was Tim Bogert), but none of them claimed he was the best ever. I wouldn't call Lemmy a notable bass player.
@shomanca You misunderstand me, i said "best bass player in rock n roll history" I never compare bassists of different genres, its the same as comparing apples and oranges. They both taste great, but their to different to compare. I would call Lemmy a bass guitarist of note, being the founder of the first band of the NWOBHM and having a very unique stage presence and sound, while being a very skilled lyricist, hes noteable in my opinion.
@RedRicky590 yes, Cliff Burton is overrated as well - it often becomes a popularity contest, because people like the band that a certain musician is in
@scartissue94 LOL..........I'm going to say this and then I'm finished! I've spent the last 50 years listening to great bass players, so there's nothing you can tell me that will make me believe Entwistle is the best bassist ever!
Agreed 100% If you play bass and you think your place in the band is to follow the guitar riffs note for note, you are wrong and should repeatedly listen to The Seeker.

the (really faint) guitar on the back it's from woodstock performace. and also john's bass did not sound like this, it was more muffed at the festival.
indeed... he had some insane pick technique as well. most early stuff and i believe the infamous live at leeds was played with a pick... i remember an interview where he said he started using his fingers to be more flashy...
i saw an interview with john whee he said he had seen this bass player playing with two fingers and thought he would give a try. later on that same bass player came and told him that he enjoyed how he played and asked hwer he learned how to play that way. joh replied he learned i from him. the guy said that he played with his thumb. he just switched to his fingers because he had a blister.
ive seen that interview... its quite funny... like how pete said he got the windmill from keith richards who he later found out was just stretching...
He saw a bassplayer playing live using his finger instead of the thumb (which was common for bassist), and John started mimicking that until it evolved into him using all of his fingers. He later talked to that guy who explained he just had a blister on the thumb that particular night.

i think john was isolated all the time with keith doing his tricks and pete "just blowing there minds" as he says and roger voice. but i love his playing just so free and makes it look so easy he doesnt have to be told :D

Isolated one side of the stereo track (muted the other) although John is coming out the right, should be left!
