Sorry, no. I work in software QA and technical writing, and I know the difference between a geek and a douche. Sterling is a douche. Awesome writer, though.
I don't think he was rude here at all. If anything, he was quite charming in his own way. All I care about, however, is his writing, which is always excellent, both fiction & non-fiction. I could care less if he has touches of curmudgeonly behavior in him. Who doesn't, frankly?
I read the comments on here and I couldn't honestly say one thing he even said that was offensive! Not one single thing!
As far as his attitude, he does have a casual way of talking about global warming, but I think that's honest, because that's the way most people do. Furthermore, he's been talking about environmental issues for decades in his work and so now its nothing new to him, even though it may still be shocking to you, if you don't know about it.
I am also a fan, which is why I am so disappointed with the way he treats people during interviews. I guess I want everyone I admire to be "nice," which is a foolish thing to wish for. Search youtube for "Teemu Arina interviews Bruce Sterling" for an example of what I am talking about. Maybe they caught him on a bad day...but still!
I have seen the interview in question ["Teemu Arina..."] and I can see absolutely nothing wrong with his behavior, nothing offensive or rude. Sterling simply has a bit of a snarl in the way he speaks. He has a similar tone even when he's giving lectures in academic settings. Just his manner. He may be somewhat arrogant, but given his body of work, I feel as though he's earned that right. He was really nice when I met him.
I reeeaally get to like his tone and attitude. It's unique. As his work is, of course.

Maybe you're right. Maybe he's not a douche, and just comes off like one in every interview he's ever done.

Nonsense, you're mistaking intelligence and his geeky accent with douchiness.
Common mistake.... you're excused.
I wish Sterling would get his hand dirty with how to solve these problems...which is sounds like he's beginning to touch on here.

What's with the camera work? The operator didn't know he was RECORDING? Fucking end it with the postmodern shaky nauseating BS.

What I didn't like is how the lady laughed when she asked him what a "cyberpunk" was.
You're interviewing bruce sterlign and you're going to laugh at an entire literary genre that he helped to found?
Oh hey, lets laugh at someone who calls themself an "abstract painter" or a "post-rock artist"!
Wow, talk about a magazine full of artistic SQAUARES!

I know it shouldn't matter, but watching someone act like a jerk on TV makes me feel weird about enjoying his novels as much as I do.
beautifulspam 4 years ago
What did he say that made him a jerk?
guitarboy22j 4 years ago
It's not what he says, it's his attitude. And although you can't see it here, he is often rude to interviewers and fans.

I'm a fan and I've never once read an interview like that. Maybe you could point me to one.
