This is an amazing track.. I like GG but they are not one if my absolute faves, and at times I can find them hit and miss, but one thing I can say about them they are probably one if the most musically talented bands ever.. This is one of their best!
I generally dislike fade-outs -- "if you can't be bothered to write a decent ending then I can't be bothered to listen to your boring fade-out". But this is totally different. It is relevant to the album's story, and the GG guys are developing the melodic theme, harmonies and instrumentation right down to volume=0. And beyond? -- can you have negative volumes?
This part is about heaven or dying,it's the reflection of all three friend's lives before they die.I think that is why this part is so cathedral sounding. Ilove the use of mellotron , the old hammond organ with a great low end bass and a beautiful melody.

This gives me the goose bumps every time, never fails.I'm using a bridged power amp to a Boston woofer and I can tell you, there's a very rich low end in this recording.I bet they used a real instruments like found on cathedrals, not just synthesisers.LOL
There are four songs I know of that trail off into heaven. This is one of them. The other three are Supper's Ready by Genesis, Le Raconteur by Pentacle, and Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix. Please tell me if there are others!
@Anglagard1 yes, some more like,Crumble(Phideaux) Pentacle not even listen, but i will, and at the cinema show(Genesis),and A Saucerful of Secrets(Pink Floyd),I Talk to the Wind (K.Crimson), Karn Evil 9 (3rd Impression,E.L.P) Ripples(Genesis)One For The Vine(Genesis)the latter influenced by Hackett, and a few more that i dont remember rite now,
@fugitivo2007 Thanks for the recomendations and thanks for speaking in my language. I know (and like) all of the songs you mention except Crumble, which I listened to and liked just now. Are you from Brazil?
@Anglagard1 no, i am from Argentina, I do like to practice English with the help of google, crumble is a delicate and beautiful track, if you like guitars listen Santana, the other video that i uploaded, awesome track, personally always liked the guitar of Ritchie Blackmore ( Deep Purple-Burn-A200) and Al Dimeola (Elegant Gypsy)
NEWS ALERT< NEWS ALERT !!!! THIS IS THE SICKEST MUSIC UNDER 3 MINUTES ON youtube, and THE GREATEST PROG ROCK BAND EVER ASSEMBLED IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC !!! YELLLLLLL,SCREAMMMMM !!
This music is indead unique and sounds timeless. I have long been a Prog Rock fan but have never heard Gentle giant until I stumbled onto this via you Tube. I have now bought Gentle Giants first three CD's and love them.
in 200 Years, when all the industrial music crap of today will be disappeared, people will ask " how could musicians create such masterpieces in 1972 ? "
God, every one of their songs sound different, yet all the weird styles iive seen sound great. from knots to giant for a day to proclamation. they are all amazing GG. prog on \m/,
io li ho scoperti ieri...ed oggi ho già ascoltato l'album 3 friends....tra organi eterei, chitarre metafisiche ed accompagnamenti pulsanti ne sono rimasto totalmente incantato!!!
they list the 100 best progressive albums of all time. regardless of rank- they are all masterpieces that will blow your mind, aswell as introduce you to new artists you will come to love. goodluck. google it
On some copies the track was mistracked and contained the last part of "Mr. Class and Quality", so for that reason on some copies the track appears longer. This is the real timing of the song!
Unique like the other 70's progressive rock groups, for example Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, EL&P, Pink Floyd - everyone on its own way. Let's take Genesis "Afterglow" ending 1,5 min. In my opinion very close to GG's masterpiece ending of Three Friends.
listen to the track "I Talk to the Wind" by king Crimson (awesome flute for god sake!!!!) and "the Lamia" and "at the cinema show" by Genesis both, (awesome keyboards and drums) just listen please if you didnt yet.-
hey guys take it easy, listen selling England by a pound, in the court of Crimson King, Tarkus, the lamb lies down on broadway, Relayer, the dark side of the moon, to name a few, are also important conceptual works
I have to agree with Pingo. This band has phenomenal music skills the others do not posess. Though this band is not perfect. No band or musician is. When I listen to alot of their music, I come to a conclusion that they are the finest progressive band I have ever heard so far in my life, and above commerical prog bands as a whole.
exactly my friends, this is indeed a musical orgasm!!! I agree with u progmeck1 these guys are not from this planet!!! These guys are musical multi-instrumentalist geniuses!!
The height of early Giant. I was learning bass at the time and would play this riff over and over. It could go on forever and never loose it's deep emotional impact.
i forget to say that the version at Pompei live of course is very beatiful too, theres a dispute about the different versions, which is better? well. is a question of taste, i think, here the link, in this version the keyboard sound fantastic, anyway 3 versions are fantastic masterpice
does anyone ever hear the song "A sauceful of secrets"
by Pink Floyd? well the keyboard is awesome, in both versions, Ummaguma and saucerful of secrets, try to listen, especially after the initial chaos comes the heaven, and voice of david gilmore make an impressive song, i want to my funeral.-
Although each member of the band was extremely talented, the exceptional synergy present in Gentle Giant resulted in their combined talent being more than the sum of their individual talents.

For a long time I knew only "In a glass house" and "Octopus" Albums. Three Friends hard to find. Since several months now, the great "Repertoire" Label has re-issued the Album in a great paper sleeve, like the Japan-Re-Issues. Now I have the Album and I like it so much. Especially this song! Thanks a lot for uploading! Fredy, Switzerland
@Semente200: This, Supper's Ready, and Axis Bold As Love all leave off at a place where human beings cannot go. They will continue when we are born into the afterlife.
sorry, I'm just so used to them having longer songs. plus I've only heard a sample of this on a prog rock site so I expected a ten minute song. However that doesn't matter because this song is top tier.
hey snoog hello dude, another day I download this song again from ares it said that this song had 7:25, but in fact had only 3:00, well i dunno which is the true really, ok thx again snoog see u around, and sorry for my bad english :-)

On the GG website, some guy reviewed this album, saying this about Three Friends:
"This is one track which even Giant can't write an end for; they have to repeat and fade-out in the yearning outro to end all yearning outros. "
Damn right - Especially after taking in the lyrical story of this album, this one pulls on your heartstrings.
