Good list except for James Cameron (I can't really enjoy his movies, mostly due to personal taste) and I would have added Wes Anderson (my favorite director), Francis Ford Coppola, and George Lucas.
@LukeLovesRose he's the furthest thing possible to the modern day Hitchcock for a number of reasons: 1) He takes way too long to make a movie (Hitchcock released Vertigo, North by Northwest, and Psycho all b/w 1958 &1960 -- all better movies than any of Cameron's...which take him like 7 years to make on avg.) 2) Hitchcock and Cameron make completely different styles/genres of film (Hitchcock focuses on story and Cameron likes special effects) 3) C. Nolan would be the modern day Hitchcock.
You're a genius. The new Hitchcock would not be making suspense thrillers. He would be mastering a new genre. And people have been calling Cameron a master of action since The Terminator. After Kubrick, who also made very few masterpiece, do you really think the modern Hitchcock would be able to punch out a new movie with new techniques every year?? Nolan is like every other "great" filmmaker out there today. He stands on the shoulders of true masters like Hitchcock or Kubrick.
@LukeLovesRose If Cameron is known for anything, its the "dazzle" factor (special effects). But again, personal taste over here, you're welcome to your opinion. At least we can agree on the talent Hitchcock and Kubrick and other directors of the past.
Where is Kubrick, Polanski, Lynch, Spike lee or Woody Allen?

OMG! Nolan? Lynch? Jackson? Are you serious?
I'm glad you placed James Cameron on your list. But, no way is Scott a better filmmaker or Darabont and especially NOT Zwick. Jesus. See more movies.
I mean, Steven Spielberg and Scorsese are No. 1 and No. 2?? Where the fuck was Kubrick or Hitchcock??

LOL. Is this a reaction to Avatar?? Because, after a career like James Cameron's, you'd be a fool not to put him on top best director's lists.
