  • My friend is blind and reads braille, I bought him a cheese grater for christmas and he told me that it was the most violent thing he had ever read.

  • I was actually really wondering if there was such a thing and then came across your vid.... and there is! Cool !!

  • gay

  • "hey honey feel this....its braille graffiti =O....oh those blind gangsters and their braille graffiti!"

  • Nice project, amazing printer:-)) How did you gain access to it? And is this grade 2 braille? I found it difficult to read. Perhaps you can add the 5 phrases to the infobox of the video.

  • Grade 1 or 2 XD

  • also since i do tactile graphics i was thinking, couldn't you draw something then print it out on that sticky paper and put it up so that the blind people could feel a picture? the system at my work only prints graphics on this special paper then it gets "toasted" so it wouldn't work with our system

  • im a tactile graphics artist and have been thinking of going some graffiti in braille for a while, im not to good with the alphabet but i opened up braille 2000 and 6 keyed this in "you dont have to be blind to see the writing on the wall."

  • interesting idea, poor execution. Why was the braille put in places that blind people don't have normal interaction with? seriously? on the side of a truck? the handrails /might/ work but it's highly unlikely. and what's with the sticker? is it because blind people will rarely if ever come across these that you need to point it out to people who can see for it to mean anything to anyone? Why weren't these added next to places that already have braille? then they might actually read it.

  • Valid concerns, considered prior to exec (&, Ive answered to this criticism in these comments b4). Art is often in unexpected places. This dovetails with the stickers: when 99% of humans see a blind person next to Braille Graffiti they will empower the blind to read the message & share. The labels are meant to bring people together, not just 4 labeling. We seeing people think of composition in a different way. I hope my thoughts here express at least an attempt @ thoughtfulness. -swi

  • @symplvision ...the book of Eli! hahaha.

    jus playin... good video

  • If I ever go blind, I hope I come across braille graffiti.

  • what is written on these stickers? i love this idea.

  • @11freedomfighter11 at 1:00 and 1:38, it says "Tiny bubbles that randomly rose from the paper in this arrangement." Very beautiful to me. I didn't try to read any of the others eye strain is bad for your vision. :)

  • how u know when some1s there or not duh ha thats kool though i like there wanting to try whats that word

  • dude wat was all tha about

  • amazing<3

  • This would be such a cute suprise if you were blind and came across it, very cool.

    Handrails would work well

  • thats pretty cool

  • ok thats a good idea but how r they gonna know its there?? they dont randomly rub there hand there and also what does the graffiti mean???

  • thats a pretty good idea but how are they gonna know its there? people dont just randomly rub there hands on walls (or do they?0

  • Neat, but why not design the type right into the strip?

  • The Braille was printed on a Braille printer and the "Braille Graffiti" sticker is just ink, and so a different printer. It's not important to their aesthetic for them to have simplified the product by complicating the process.

  • I think this is so great! I make Braille jewelry and shirts and i love this! I am a sighted person, but I have an 11 year old neice who is blind and I am behind anything that promotes Braille awareness. Pats on the backs to the artists!

  • COOL!

  • This is what they say

"Oh the beauty that rests inherent with non-pragmatic statements"

(the word "with" is not clear and could be "the")

"It's a secret. You have to be part of the club to know what this says"

"Tiny bubbles that randomly rose from the paper in this arrangement"

"You don't have to be blind to see that the writing is on the wall."

"The glorious bliss of the Giant Now!"

There could be a few other characters mistaken as the resolution is not too good in places, sorry.

  • Bet most of these are enjoyed by blind people by someone sighted saying "Hey, did you know there is braille graffiti here?" They investigate, read what it says, strike up a conversation, and look out for more. A blind person could even start his/her own graffiti project, adding to it. Maybe even making the pattern of dots more artistic to match the tone of the message. One could use epoxy putty, exterior spackle, or self-adhesive dots instead of strips. Gets people thinking, Cristo-esque.

  • The problem with braille is that there is only one "font." There is no such thing as different font styles or sizes in braille. All you people complaining that it's just writing don't understand that if the configuration of dots were changed to make it more "artistic" it would make it unreadable and thus no longer braille.

  • so if the are blind how do they know where they can find it ?

  • Braille is so easy, i can read it with my eyes closed.

  • i wonder what the braille said..i wish i could read it :S

  • it's cool, but i had a hard time making it out. i've wanted to do something like this, but obviously someone beat me to it. ah well. still pretty cool.

  • Great concept - it does make me think.

  • soup cans with braille. i like it.

  • *shrugs* Graffiti is art! This is nothing more than labeling. I don't consider marking my soup cans with little dots for finger reading art- so why is this any different? and don't give me the "a blind person suggested it" speech my vision is 20/400 with corrective wear.

  • Excuse me? I'm an Artist, who happens to be totally blind, THIS IS ART! artistic in its own right! Well done to the creators, well thought out idea, very well executed! Being blind is meerely something unfortunate, the gift to be able to express ones self through artistic language, is truely astonishing! So, Applause from Canada!!

Partially sighted people can't appreciate the reading methods of Braille, its just not in the nature, sorry!

  • You are excused! I am also a blind artist (not an elitist)I just don't consider this art. If I smeared body fluids on a large canvas I'm sure someone would find it brilliant. It's all about perception. I've embraced blindness and don't consider it unfortunate.

I read/write grade 2, Sometimes I see shapes other times I can make out much more. I have gone weeks at a time without vision. So I do appreciate Braille it keeps me literate. Maybe you should consider me illegally sighted?

    *smirks*

  • if your blind, how do you know what this video show's us? Don't say something is art without seeing it. that's a bit to easy.

  • Theres no need to see art. art is somthing you feel within you.

  • very cool. as an art piece i find the text problematic. just b/c a blind person suggested the signs-your the artist. it makes it feel less poetic and sincere when you have to point at it with a sign. but its still cool.

  • dip shit its not sticker stamping noob read the discription next time!

A project for the blind. All braille found in public is of the practical nature, directing them this way and that. Further, obviously, without vision, blind people miss out on the beauty that graffiti can present in our culture, both aesthetically but also conceptually.

This is an attempt to create a unique experience for the blind people who happen to come across these bits of graffiti designed for them.

  • The picture was bad and I couldn't read all the Braille but it looks like the Braille is only random sayings where there is graffiti. "Tiny bubbles randomly rise up from..." couldn't read the rest. I will definitely have to check it out next time I'm in Portland.

  • a see'ing person could direct a blind person to the brille and a blind person tell the see'ing person what it says... kinda like.. see'ing and blind people hand in hand kinda thing :S

  • looks like Portland Or. Ive seen him up

  • Why do they label it?!?!?!

If your blind you can't read the label and if you can see you can't read the Braille so the labels a bit pointless.

  • the art is for the blind. the labels make it more likely that the blind will "see" the art." someone who can see might not understand that. but actually, a blind person suggested it.

  • its acutally not ment for the blind. its somethin' that should make 'u think

  • and how would they ever know it's there in the first place.

  • @Dyendra I have perfect vision, and I can read Braille.

  • I agree, surly blind people won't know its there?

    still a good idea

  • peep youtube: yes yes graffiti

  • that's amreally coool idea. ^.^

  • how can blind people know its there?

  • thats what i was wondering like do they touch everything or sumthin

  • I love it!

I couldn't read it all, I guess it had a lot of contractions, which I don't know.

  • Во гавнище то а, да не, реально гавнище!

  • good

  • i really like this one

  • i got this from some1 but it says

00:30 Oh, the beauty that rests inherent with non-pragmatic statements.

1:00 + 1:35 Tiny bubbles that randomly rose from the paper in this arrangement.

1:25 + 1:44 The glorious bliss of the GIANT NOW!*

1:14 + 1:20 You don't have to be blind to see that this writing is on the wall.

    * This last part was difficult to read, and I don't know if it is completely accurate.

  • hahaha that was cute, imagine a blind guy graffiting the streets

  • impressive!!

  • what a great idea

  • to add: there's a joke about the braille used in elevators and such: the sighted sign will read "third floor", and underneath that in braille: "stupid sighted people"...

  • point is, i would never be able to read them as a visually impaired person without being alerted to them. we don't seek for something we can't feel is there.

  • wack

  • awesome

  • haha cool

  • great idea!

  • what no drips:)-Zes

  • Nice concept

  • yea

  • The concept is good.

  • what did they say?

  • 00:30 Oh, the beauty that rests inherent with non-pragmatic statements.

  • thanks :)

  • If you didn't make all that up then nice one lol

  • Thanks, and don't worry, I didn't make it up; I'm learning Braille to be a Braille transcriber.

  • found the statement, thx!

  • sigh - isn't it a bit oxymoronic to label the Braille graf with text stickers? Also, how about the fact that it's only a sticker? Interesting idea, but it needs to show a wee bit more sensitivity to the psychogeography of graf culture, too. Yet, I'd be tickled to find one of these in my 'hood.

Is there an artist statement around you could post?

  • just went on their website and got this-

One sentence reads: You don't have to be blind to see that the writing is on the wall.

Another: Tiny bubbles that randomly rose from the paper in this arrangement.

  • good idea, but i wish there was some way to let the blind actually see or feel the actual art.

  • it's actually brail... what's not to feel?

  • that means they can read words, not see art.

  • You just don't get it do you? It's brail, so blind people can read it. It's Graffiti because of the message the brail contains and the fact that it was posted illegally on public space, and it's art because of the combination of the two.

Unless you were being litteral with your wish of "some way to let the blind actually see..." well yeah i'd love them to have good eyesight too. but you know that's what science is for, this is art.

  • alright, alright, calm down, i understand where ur coming from

  • Well it took you long enough. Sorry if I got upset, but you were basically saying the idea was a failure because it couldn't be understood by those it was reaching out to. Did you think it was just pictures of braille and not actually 3-D so the blind couldn't read it?

  • i never thought it was a failure (it wa a great idea), and I knew it was real

  • Then please explain your original comment

  • forget about it

  • by the way it's spelt Braille, with a capital B

  • Ironic that your statement about spelling and grammar is grammatically incorrect. Even more so that the letters are the same. If you had read and understood my arguments you would realize I'm an advocate of the artistic idea of this project and not whether it's loyal to either Braille or graffiti. This is Youtube, it's not published, theres no editors, so long as my idea is not obstructed it doesn't bother me, and I'm curious about why it should bother you.

  • I, too, will have to give you a thumbs-down. Excuse me for not citing any sources, but I read just the other night that when referring to the man you would use Braille. But if you are referring to the writing system, then it would be braille (lowercase).

  • I like the footage, I mean does everthing need to be a hollywood production to be stimulating. The art and the ideas alone are stimulating.

  • wonder what it says

  • lol!

i waz woundering how they would now of graff...

  • ok. That is a killer idea. With some good footage. But the fact that you didn't tell the viewers what the hell is says.. is just kind of annoying. And then, if you would have put music to this footage, it would have been a lot more interesting. Otherwise its just a guy with a camera that zooms. But I give you guys props. I like the idea and that you went out and did that.

  • and how other people know that that's graffity

  • cool idea, but what's written on it?

  • lol very very cool, but how can blind people see where it is? They are blind? Not like they can be like, "hey, look over there! Brail I can read!" lol but if someone pointed it out to a blind person then it would be usefull.

  • They put it on places that blind people might hold on to guide their way...

  • hahahaha "hey look over there! braille graffiti!!!" hahahaha classic!!!

  • creative idea. what does it say?

  • L'idée est vraiment bonne... :)

  • cool idea!

  • cool, im going to look for them. what streets can i find them

  • thats a cool idea. nice vid.

  • Fantastic, really marvellous concept.

    Awesome work.

  • I think it would be much more interesting and mysterious without the label "Braille Graffiti". And what about putting it mostly on objects that blind people might touch more often, like stair railings. Otherwise, cool idea.

  • about the labels: i didn't even think about the labels until they were recommended by the blind people i interviewed. labels are for the blind, so that the graffiti will get noticed and the blind people can read it. i was told the braille that already exists in public is actually rarely used, and so putting the graffiti up all over, with a little label, would draw attention and the blind would be empowered and sought out to actually read the message. thanks for enjoying the project. -swi

  • Bravo, Scott. Beautiful work.

  • fucking genius. awesome

  • I got it all cleared up, forget my first comment.

  • how are the bind going to find that graffiti in most of places you are putting the braille graffiti. I don't think blind people go around touching things like that. Just throwing it out there.

  • did you read any of the project info? the locations and ideas came from interviews with blind people.
