No way they need that many. You can see by this video how tough hyenas are. That hyena didnt even look fully grown for starters. On its own against two big male lions and he still puts up a good fight. I reckon 10 hyenas would take on two big males. Maybe even less.

According to the documentarian the hyenas would have had to have 15x the number of lions they were going to engage in order to be successful. Says quite a bit about the power of the lion.
