@100foldharvest They are updating the Canadian Army.. There are 65 F-35 jets coming in by 2016. Approximately 50 + helicopters ( chinooks. cyclone) alone. Approximately 55 new transport and search and rescue Aircrafts.. ( 2014- 2016) ~ 26 new ships by 2017.. 1500 + tactical Patrol vehicles and leopard tanks by 2011- 2017...

Sure, the Blue Angels are good and all, but they they use F-18 x4, a fairly versatile aircraft in lesser numbers. We use Tutors x9. Not sure how many of you Yanks comprehend this, but 9 is bigger than 4. A 9 aircraft formation is harder to keep than a 4 aircraft formation. Besides, the Snowbirds are Canadian. We're clearly the better Air Demonstration team.

watched these guys in Airdrie Alberta today. they didnt have a F-18 to open. the C/F-18 came as a closing act. it didnt have the military paintjob either. there was a F86 that was in formation with them in opening though.

my canadian government is the worst when it comes to replacing old equipment... we will probably see these planes for another fifty years... and then they will get badly ripped off when they try and replace them with already obsolete equipment, and only on the condition that they get a raise in pay as well ... (we still do not have new helicopters)

The reason probably lies in the cost for many reasons but mainly:

Fuel costs - Bigger and more modern planes use up much more fuel then the planes that are used by the Canadian Air Force and the British Air Force. The Tornado uses more fuel on takeoff then a Hawk does in 2 hour of flight.

Manouverability - Smaller and lighter planes are much more well suited to Acrobatic flight.

The Hawk (the plane that the Red Arrows use) is now outdated, the RAF don't even do courses to teach the...

Engineers how to maintain a Hawk, they have to rely on their past experience with other Jets and learn by experience.

Even though the Hawk is one of the most basic traning aviants in the RAF, it is still in use for the RAFAT (Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team) due to its lightweight body and manouverability.

best air-acrobats ever. even if the planes are 40 year old. thats actually quite new for the canadian air-force. just check out our impressive sea-king helicopters. they are called that because most of them wind up in the sea. we paid half a billion dollars for some company not to build us new helicopters. i would have not built the helicopters for a lot less.

Yeah, the Snowbirds and Red Arrows can do some much more innovative formations since they fly 9-ship shows, and one the the draws for the Angels and T-Birds was that they used to work sonic booms into their displays. Since the FAA banned sonic booms over continental USA (and most other countries have banned it as well), they're stuck with 4-6 ship formations... Diamonds, and diamonds, and missing man, and diamonds...

I think the Canadian Snowbirds and Italy's Frecce Tricolori perform the most complicated maneuvers of any flying team. The Snowbirds also hold their formations longer and it's so beautiful.
