I was there! I remember walking through Derby Market Place and was asked if I wanted some tickets for this show, as there were still plenty left. Which is nowadays seems amazing as the tickets were free anyway, but this was before the Smiths were well known. I also remember people were given flowers on the way in, obviously for the benefit of the TV cameras and threw them on cue for this charming man, one of the stems hit morrisey in the eye and they had to do the song again!
@NOxTHRASHxNOxFUNx I sort of agree with this statement but I personally think that the highly underated fleetwood mac has to be discussed as one of the best ever.
im going to be brave and say it,,there have been great bands,,beatles pink floyd led zeppelin,,but the smiths for me is the greatest band ever without all the bullshit trimmings that goes with the rock and roll life,,best guitar lines, best lyrics..not even john lennon or paul mcartney wrote em quiet like mozz could.pity it only lasted under five years, nearly every tune a gem.
that's right! love all the bands you mentioned but there's something unique about the smiths that reach to the core of a person in a deeply and amazing way
well the great thing about the smiths is that, unlike the beatles pink floyd and led zeppelin, the smiths never had bad album. everyone was quality, their first album was as good as their last; and thats what makes them one of the greatest-and most extremely underrated-bands ever.
hey man dont forget andy rourke's terrififc throbbing bass lines and mike joyce's killer drum fills, for music if your looking for any of those things, there is a light that never goes out. The Smiths.
@andrewkenworthy you're not any braver than me when I say THIS!....The Smiths and Joy Division are unique...anyone that even attempts to cover their songs are on a losing streak.....you can't buy atmosphere...and there was a serious atmosphere around Manchester certainly through the 70's.
my dad used to take me on holiday there...Belle Vue zoo etc..But all the buildings were covered in black soot and Hartshead Pike was the only thing I remember...and that is that....The Smiths are England.
@andrewkenworthy Morrissey and Johnny Marr were awesome, John and Paul or the beatles couldn't replicate em, I have been Morrissey and the Smiths since 84, I still dress like Morrissey when he was in The Smiths and and still have that same haircut! LONG LIVE MORRISSEY AND THE SMITHS!!!
@andrewkenworthy agree with everything you said. no other bands get close to the smiths for me, even the beatles. i've always felt it's a pity they only lasted 5 years, the smiths back catalogue isn't big enough :-( but at least nearly every song was brilliant, with the exception of a few.
Thick twat my ass and it has more brains than you... there was no concept in the first place. In an interview he (mozz) said he just thought flowers were beautiful and there was no special reason for him to wave them on stage.
Is it just me or i think it was bad ass when he introed into the song he slid to the mic!

i mean i gotta agree with that comment about the smiths being possibly the greatest band ever..
i listen to alot of different music genre's. some so extreme that most would be like what the hell was that
but the smiths are just somethin else, it's something unquestionable, hard to describe and thats the genius of it all
i could go on and on and on about how the band is amazing individually but think we all know that
