My dad worked on the 'Blue streak project' at De Havillands (British aero space)as an engineer in the 1950's (I'm not sure if he met Von Braun). He told me about the V2, how this was the precurser of the space rocket, it always fascinated me as a little girl, to think that the technology for making this weapon could be put to something as marvellous as the Apollo missions to the moon - long time ago now of course!
That's the big Q isn't it? Supposedly super smart Germans who either: A. Delude the leader whom they adored so as not to get sent to manage a factory (too old to fight). OR B. The Germans were a lot closer to the kinds of warheads you need to make the V-2 useful. Namely Isomer Nukes. The IR fuze cores for the U.S. atomic bomb came over on U-234. Nobody knows what was going on inside Jonastal Complex. And making nukes is actually simple chemistry. Not reactor driven. Big Cover Up.
@tompouceful I wouldn't say a killer. Killers in my view......the Nazi Officers and the SS who actually cut down Jews and others with rounds of leaded fire. Who forced them into the gas chambers and watched them die while probably sipping iced tea. They are or where bloody killers. That is a BIG difference to this guy....a guy solving equations on a board and figuring out aerodynamic problems.
@senor47 keep sniffing glue dude. The slave labor involved with constrution of the german V-2 was very large with prisoners corpses stacked like wood throughout just one of three V-2 factorys at Mittelwerk,Over ninety percent of the 10,000 laborers were non-Germans Officials estimate that from 1943 until 1945, 60,000 prisoners worked in these factories. Of these, 20,000 had died from various causes including starvation, fatigue and execution.
@fluffy1931 I am calling the SS guard the murderers. I call von Braun a genius and refer to the Nazi officers and armed SS as the murderers. The put those prisoners to work at the factories. All German scientists were also on watch. If one refused an order or was against the regime, they were dealt with. If he knew about the workers, there was not much he could have done. He either followed the Nazi ideology present in Germany at the time or was afraid to speak up that is even if he really knew.
@senor47 ...,Lots of scientist refused and left nazi germany , dude. Nazi ideology didn't happen over night! When Hitler came to power in 1933' the writing was already on the wall. Jewish scientist were already being hounded out of universities and laboratories. Nazi ideology was begining to dominate germanys science communities some embraced it enthusiastically others argued that science lies outside the boundaries of politics and morality. Your arguement is a fantasy.

WW2 besides carnage(the dead bodies would stretch all the way to the moon),
allowed quantum leap in technology and the futuristic world we live in today, remember that just century ago wars were fought with horses.
The computer started with the british trying to break the german codes.

I honestly feel sorry for Von Braun.
All he wanted to do was fly rockets but got caught up in WW2 on the wrong side and that forever tainted his reputation.
Still he had it better than his soviet counterpart Sergie Korolev who spent 6 years in a gulag because he had a brain and also wanted to fly rockets.
Von Braun and Sergie Korolev, Genius's that could of had us on mars by now if they'd been left alone to work without war ruining everything.

Results were devestating? What? So you dropped a few houses for how much in resources.
V2s were a waste of time, resources that should have been spent winning the war not trashing a few civilian properties.
