This is not Greek Rembetika...I don't know what it is, not criticizing it, but it's not Greek Rembetika...I agree with someone here, find another name in your "language" to call it...
@431Anna this is not Greek..not at all..this is more Turkish...look at the faces..are Turkish Greeks not looking like that.......but on the other hand this is ART...that;s what Lisa Gerrard feels like when she thinks of Greek music...ok acceptable!
the real rembetika comes from thessalia -peireas-and thessaloniki.rembetika is the roots off rock music and way of living..if u search (not only internet) you will find rembetika and smirneika since 1900 and earlier ,and their lyrics are about "rock" life...talking about drugs , women and fighting wth knifes mostly and describing their everyday living...anyway lisa has a divine way of singing
if you study old Greek songs, either from the islands or the mountians you will feel alot of similarities between Greeks, Easterners and even Native Americans, the very strong soul sounding chants from it. Greek Byzantine music is a good example in their authentic versions, and for the Greek folk music, those from Pontos,Epiros,Crete, really heavy and soul kind of sounds. and btw good video :)
This is such wonderful Jungian symbolism. Discovery, realising, releasing, integrating, searching, sometimes "enslaving" the inner child. Wonderful interplay between the animus, anima and child, ALL the symbols are here. Really great stuff. Seeing self through the child,. wow one could on forever. Good work to who ever created this. Lisa is a gem.
Personaly i don't find common elements in this song with rembetica, proving its influence and its inspiration. Its feeling is absolutely eastern far away from the anatolian flavor of rembetica. But the song is realy great.A masterpiece
rembetika is 100% GREEK....bogemian has nothing to to with it...read up on your history more before u make absurd claims...ZITO I ELLAS!! REMBETIKA YIA PANTA!
Wow - I just went to find some of his stuff, and that's what it's really about. Reminds me what being Greek feels like - I'm only a quarter Greek and sometimes I forget. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
Lisa has a bouzouki (greek instrument) player who is from Greece with her for decades now, I think he may have something to do with this beautiful "multicultural " song....
First of all wrong tag. This is not Rembetika. This is a mixture of oriental-Arabic music of some sort. Rembetika is a form of Greek music that originated on the Minor Asia coast before the 1922 Minor Asia disaster, when nearly 2 mill. Greeks were violently expelled by the Turks from their ancestral homes. Rembetika then flourished in mainland Greece after the 1920s and was mainly sung by the outcasts and in underground clubs. This is rembetika /watch?v=wPPrZrqOljQ&feature=related

This has nothing to do with hellenic rebetico... You should name it another name.
You are cryptoracist against hellenic people.
