  • Producer John Guedel was impressed with both Harmon and Jack Wheeler (who had also appeared as a contestant on "You Bet Your Life" during the 1960-61 season), that when "Tell it To Groucho", a short-lived prime-time game show premiered in early 1962, both Harmon and Wheeler were "assistants" to Groucho on this show, in place of George Fenneman (who at the time had a daytime game show titled "Your Surprise Package", and was likely unavailable for the new show)

  • What an ass, trying to make her look stupid.man she's hot,her career was 40 yrs to soon.she would be huge now

  • Grouch plays dumb sometimes.

  • Actually this clip is out of context. If you see the whole show (which I did), Groucho is impressed with Joy's talent (not just her looks).

  • what a babe j h

  • Joy Harmon famous scene in the movie cool hand luke, great car wash

  • actually people, the truth is not that well known about her she was born either in 1940 town of Flushing, New York or 1943 in st. Louis, Missouri

the truth may never be known.

    at least she's living

  • She's so awkward

  • ..OMG she looks just like Goldie Hahn.. LoL

  • @ANICON2006 More like Jane Mansfield I think.

  • Whoa! Lucille my baby...My Lucille you motherheads. This is a Joy to watch. lol. thanks PiMannix .

  • @cinerama62 Ha Ha HA !!! Lucille , anything but blind!!!

  • HHAHAHAHAHAH

  • She washed a heck of a car in Cool Hand Luke.

  • The date is October 13, 1960. She's 20.

  • What year was this?

  • Platinum blonds were the rage at that time, and she was either inexperienced in the Hollywood climate, or aware of Groucho's on screen persona. He was, or could be, very restrained and father-like when he thought it appropriate. She may have been acting out the "innocent" routine for this event, too.

  • Wow !

witty Groucho Marx couldn't get a leg up on Joy.

  • she's a common sense gurl!

  • Spelled girl.

  • She's still alive and kicking! She owns a bakery shop in California! I kid you not! Google it!

  • Damn she's hot.....

  • She's 70 now. You like that?

  • Is she any relation to Mark Harmon , or Angie Harmon or Tom Harmon ?

  • Aunt. Works at Walmart now. on oxygen.

  • @crestadent No.

  • I think she intimidates him with her beauty, so he feels the need to jab at her and make her uncomfortable. Shyness and inexperience can come across as "ditziness". In this clip she is young and beautiful. She is now a wife and mom and has her own business.

  • I think you don't know much about Groucho (I know after reading about him). Surely Joy's shyness and inexperience made her a perfect target for his merciless barrage, but 'intimidated' was not an adjective to describe Groucho's personality.

  • LOL! "Intimidates" Groucho? Joy Harmon? Obviously you know nothing about Groucho. Beautiful as she was, Groucho didn't know the meaning of that word, and Joy Harmon would certainly never show him. Some of the most mature and brilliant women on the planet, including the likes of Dorothy Kilgallen, did nothing but laugh their asses off when in Groucho's presence.

  • I have a dvd copy of The Beverly Hillbillies and she's a cameo role in one episode!

  • Groucho was a true Vaudevillian rattling off zingers one after the other. Poor Joy was truly flustered by Groucho not letting her get a word in edgewise. Kinda reminds me of Burns and Allen.

  • reminds me of the David Letterman / Paris Hiltion interview

  • This is better BY FAR.

  • No arguement; definitely came across as kind of ditzy. I bought the Groucho collection with this clip, and they say it was broadcast 10/13/60 and that using first name of 'Patty', she became Groucho's assistant on "Tell It To Groucho" two years later.

  • Hope not offensive in that I'm praising her for her part in "Cool Hand Luke" and how much her segment added to that movie. I think of her as "Lucille", George Kennedy's Character's name for her. The movie is a classic as is the segment where she's driving George Kennedy's character nut as she washes the car or truck (what guy made note of the vehicle?... our attention was on "Lucille". ROTFL

BTW, she was probably only 20 or 21 in this scene with Groucho, so I'm glad they cut her slack.

  • She was all body, no brains. It was apparent in this segment.

  • To be fair though, when Groucho starts his barrage he can make anyone look like a fool. ;)

  • 1961

  • What year is this clip from?

  • Fu-neee

  • "Your pulling my leg..."

"No but Id be glad to" lol

  • wouldn't be surprised if he nailed her later... maestro

  • gosh she was so cute geez! that was a good episodes, its on the you bet your life dvd collection i have, its great!

  • yeah ,real cute...

  • She was such a beauty and a cutie, but she was young, nervous and in no position to deal with Groucho. You can tell Groucho noticed that she was getting flustered and didn't understand his humor when he backed off and then explained to her that he knew what she meant and was just teasing her. A great clip.

  • When did this show air? Obviously she was already a celeb by that time, but for what roles in what? This must be long before 1965, but when?

  • I sure do understand that awkwardness she is feeling.

  • Joy Harmon was unbeleivably cute back then, & you can easily understand her being nervous. Groucho's towering wit was enough to intimidate anyone.

  • Damn she's gorgeous, ohhhhhh yahhhhh.....

  • I have alway's been in love with her. Joy...wherever you are (Sunland, Ca.) I love you!!!

  • If she's intelligent she'd be more than just her perishable appearance. Otherwise, you're right: she'd be nothing more than a fat old grandma.

  • Yes. Joy Harmon is a very intelligent woman. She is 69 years old.

  • & you will be a fat old something one day too.

be kind & life will be kind to you.

  • Joy Hormon looks and acts like she could suck an orange through a straw! I guess thats why Groucho liked her so much.

  • I just watched this entire episode on DVD and looked her up. She was beautiful but really stupid. I'm not sure it was an act. But the episode is great and on "You Bet Your Life: The Best Episodes." Phyllis Diller before plastic surgery is also on this same DVD. It's great, Phillis is funny and Joy is gorgeous!!

  • She acts so innocent. She's definitely a ditz. It's adorable. Groucho still owns her, though. Groucho was the epitome of badass and hardcore. He would have been making fun of a five-year old to Hitler if he had a gun to his head. He was always on the job. Love that man!

  • poor thing. she's so nervous and sweet.

  • hahaha the only modest blond in hollywood.

  • hey catbox I have several complete seasons of You Bet Your Life on VHS.

  • she is soo cute. they dont make them like her anymore

  • Harmon was best remembered as the girl washing the car in "Cool Hand Luke".

  • "do you like to fool around in the kitchen?" dang, there's no right answer to something like that!

    :D~

  • I knew her and her sister Gay vet well. They were real dolls, and very sweet

  • dang what a cutie-pie!

  • If you go some more clips of this show, don't hesitate to add :)

  • Thanks for the clip
