I'm intoxicated. Every time I hear your name. I try to remember, but nothing is the same . . . Excellent words; from an excellent song; from an excellent CD; from an excellent group. Thanks for the upload.
Abit like the years of my life "Water down the drain" spent many years buying nothing but NO 82' > on vinyl and never met anyone who shared my taste! I discovered JD later 86' sort of back to front really !! But NO have always been the ultimate for me, I don't feel I have ever connected with any other band like NO, alround Quality and missed. R.I.P NO.

The band almost broke up straight after this album. Thats why this album is so different. I always think maybe this track is an ode to their difficulties making this album..and probably why its such a classic.
After many years disliking Republic, I've suddenly just 'got it'.... perhaps I was unfairly trying to compare it to Technique or Power Corruption Lies. It's got it's own individual vibe and feel that still sounds surprisingly fresh today. This is one of the highlight tracks for me. Cheers for the upload.
@bugpowderdust27 that's EXACTLY what happened to me trying to get into Republic. I didn't like it for the longest time and then one day, BAM. It blew my mind. And yeah, it was pretty much because it didn't sound like their classic 80s stuff so I kept passing on it. But now Republic might be my favorite New Order album. Funny how that works.
Republic was my first NO album, so I discovered the band in reverse. Definitely gives a new perspective. I can understand how people like fac443 can be defensive of what they feel is the true, unadulterated NO sound. From what I understand, Republic was fraught with turmoil. Lots of people don't like what Hague did, but I think Special is one of the best NO songs out there.
Totally agree with several of the comments here, this song is extremely underrated by both, fans and the band itself. What an amazing melody it´s got!!!
haha tropics can't agree more, always crazy concerts, and bad sound, but who gives a f... always entertaing thoug like when barney and the girl were figting in copenhagen, and she left the stage, love the sound of N O til the day i say goodnight for the last time
love this tune - but horribly disappointed with their live shows (seen about 25 or 30 of them) there's always something that goes wrong - the sound engineer screws up, or the air doesn't work or band member(s) having a rough night - this band is jinxed I tell you!
Pale to insignificance when compared to the likes of Power, Corruption & Lies or Low-life. I won't even mention Technique because I want to give you a fighting chance.
No need for that, mate! We are all entitled to our own opinion. Yes, PCL is a very good album and Technique is possibly their best bur Republic has its charms and undoubtedly "neworderian" quality to it. In my view, Technique and Republic juxtapose each other in the same way that Unknown Pleasures and Closer by JD did/do. Of course, it is your right to differ but you must accept the fact that not everyone shares your view.
Granted, but as far as I'm concerned it is your view that differs from what's commonsense among NO fans. R and WFTSC are very weak albums by any standards. Which is ok, there's no reason every little thing NO do should be brilliant and perfect. But given how brilliant their side projects were at the time, it becomes apparent R is a throwaway bunch of songs put together solely with financial rescue in mind - just like WFTSC was just GR outtakes and Barney and Hooky not getting along too well.
I have been a huge New Order fan for many years, but even spanning their amazing back catalog, this song stands out as one of their all time finest tracks, it just hits right to the core. "The traces of your memory, don't belong with mine."
Agreeing with you guys here, for me their best track also... heavenly harmonies kicking in at 4:11 of this tune!

So sublime, so meaningful. Excellent track. That early 90s groove was great - The Gin Blossoms, Pearl Jam, Sheryl Crow and NO.

this song really is special, with such a dynamic sound. Stephen Hague is a genius for his production on this album.

fac443 - you are a bonehead.
all the discs are solid efforts and they are all different, so comparing and rating them is really a useless excercise. grow up.

Not very. With the exception of this song, Regret, World and Liar, the rest can easily be binned.

i personally think that once rob gretton died the bands ability to make sound, cutting edge music also died... which is a real shame.

May I just say you are one of those few of us who think Republic is an excellent album!
Bernard's lyrics on this album are also possibly one of the best he's ever written.
