  • I gotta say, I like the newer NYC better than the old Ram's Head.

  • Love all your reviews Dude !

  • i want some head, Rams head that is :)

  • AFNnnnnn!BITINnnnnnn!

  • Want the rams head

  • Comment removed

  • The Ram's Head is, IMO, THE Holy Grail of Distortion pedals.

  • They wouldn't be able to remake the Rams Head. The 2N5533 transistors are out of production for years unfortunately

  • I own both of these pedals and they are two totally different boxes. The Ram sounds soooooo sweet by itself, but add a Boss CS-2, CE-2 and delay and it is super smooth. The new model needs all the extras just to come close, but with the help of some EQ, it's still an awesome pedal. If you are looking for something close, I would highly recomend checking out Wren and Cuff. Their Box Of War is freakin' awesome.

  • where do I sign this petition?

  • The rams head is much dirtier, fuzzier and tastier, I personally think they are different animals.

  • The Ram's head has a character to it that he current muff is missing. Though it still is a great pedal.

  • Jack Black?

  • @StompboxUK Lol I thought the SAME thing!

  • Dude ok I have the new big muff pi and I feel it sounds nothing like the one you have! I think mine sounds week and bland compared to yours! Do you have any idea why? I bought it new

  • Too me, the Ram's head sounds hotter, edgier. The new version has a cozier texture, and I can see how it could also be appealing, but it's not as hot and live sounding as the ram's head.

  • with the knobs set at the same level, they pretty much sound the same

  • @MrEX3 Um...first off, when you say "at the same level," do you mean "turned to the same value" (for instance, 25% or 50%) or "tweaked until they're actually the same?" Because if you set each knob to, say, half, they'll sound wildly different.

Either way, I completely disagree. They're both fuzzy distortions with a mid cut. Otherwise, different animals. Especially since no two Ram's Heads sound quite the same.

  • @AeolianSeventh right there, you say 'tweeked till they sound the same'...what does that tell you? if one knob is at 29% or the other is at 40% but for the most part they sound the same who cares? I'm with Fran from Frantone, there is no magic. Yr talking about frequency response curve. If they can be tweeked then to sound the same that's the crux of it right there. Why? Well the new one will run you $80 and the old $??? a lot. That's why. Now, I love Gearmandude, and I dig his demos.

  • @MrEX3 There's no magic, but there are substantially different component values. The pots have different values, different tapers, and they're set at different angle--meaning to put each at half on the Ram's Head, they need to be set at 9:00, 12:00, and 3:00. Even if you can set the knobs the same, the pots are all at different values, which is what I meant about tweaking. Do you compare by setting them all at the same level, or by trying to get them as close as possible?

  • @AeolianSeventh but right at the front of the vid he says flat out that the knobs aren't right on the old one. So fix the knobs and set them the same and let em rip and well hear what sounds like what and where.

I love all big muffs by the way. When I say 'pretty much the same' I mean it's not THAT different. That's all I'm saying.

  • @MrEX3 Even with them set as close as humanly possible, I can tell them apart pretty easily, and I've got serious hearing damage. Ram's Head: smoother, less midrange. Modern: harsher and with thicker mids. Are they close enough that the average person can't tell them apart? Yes, but the average person can't tell a Boss MetalZone from a Diezel Einstein. Are they close enough for tone nuts? No.

  • @AeolianSeventh Right. I'm not saying that I disagree, but...if the modern is too harsh, turn the tone knob to the left. Do you have both?

  • @AeolianSeventh Right. I'm not saying that I disagree, but.if the modern is too harsh, turn the tone knob to the left. Do you have both? I'm not argueing by the way. I'd love to see the a re release of the old one, but if that happened, you KNOW that there would be lots of people who say that it doesn't sound as good as the old one. Just like with the Ibanez WH10, the new ones got beat up on. When the Ibanez WH10 first came out, it was crap because it had no inductor, now an old one is$500?

  • Still cant believe how awful the new Big Muff sounds!

  • Something something Jack Black something something....

  • The current NYC reissue Muff sounds horrible yuck! What are EHX thinking?!

  • Yes, please make them again Mike.

  • Current muff almost sounds sterile compared to ram's head

  • gearmandude you are amazing... really..!

  • Ram's head definitely a little richer.

  • I think he's right, EH should put out a (updated for a few modern part subs) Ram's Head reissue, why not?? I built one and it sounded great!

  • rams head all the way :)

  • Rams Head...I have both...Definitely Rams Head...

Side note! Gaermanndude, your channel is definitely the one I watch the most. None of that stupid crap. I actually am hear to listen and learn!!!

  • Nice, I really like the old one....

  • WHY DON'T THEY MAKE THE RAMS-HEAD ANYMORE! I guess the tone/wicker would be the next best thing.

  • Verry good fuzz for the price, actually it kicks some royale but, like the madprof. and such. Trully fuzzy vintage sound and in my oppinion a pedal wich is side to side with the fuzzface. The only problem is that it is to big for a pedalboard, but you always have the Bigmuff Pi with the tone wicker.

  • the ram's head seems to have a warmer overdrive feel too it. which i think makes it perfect for 60's acid rock. :)

  • That's an awesome sg gearman, where'd you get it??

  • it would be neater if instead of "lay off" he said "step off" and repeated it while screaming

  • Black crowes*

  • Its called nebakanazer or something by counting crows

  • What song is that? It's gotta a kickin' groove!

  • The knobs come like that. They have not been taken off and put back on. I don't know why, but that's they way they are.

  • wow lol tehee...

  • mr gearmann, circuts are actually the same in every way, but the biggest diference are the transistors used, those old magic transistors(FS36999) arent produced anymore!

  • @stipeur There are actually a few differences, and the newer ones use much lower quality components. When its all said and done, the transistors used actually make the smallest change in tone in relation to the differences in values of the rest of the components and the minor differences in the rest of the circuit

  • you sound a little like jack black hahahahahahaha

  • LOL i was lookin for the reflection of his face in the rams head haha

  • Comment removed

  • The rams head sounds a bit tighter and more mid-rangey. I like the smooth sound of the reissue too.

  • Love the Jack Black tone. :)

  • what song is that in intro?

  • hahaha owl strraaap

  • rockin' shoes man \m/

  • Is this guy Jack Black?

  • @christopheye damn, not again.. another "is this jack black" comment..

  • Ram's head is a beast!

  • LOVE the OWL strap. great comparison video too.

  • GREAAAT!

    which is the intro song??

    thanks!

  • @perronegroH

    what´s about the intro song?

  • All old Big Muffs sound different and sound different on any given day for the germanium transisitors are highly effected by temperatures. I have 3 vitage Muffs and they all sound different all the time. Quite maddening actually. Well, the newest, a 1978 with the op amp chips, sounds consistently good. The other two are older and have the transistors that are highly unstable.

In this video the vintage Muff wins hands down. Much for Smashing sounding.

  • @1971SuperLead umm, big muffs only use silicon transistors. germaniums were used in fuzz faces and other vintage fuzz pedals, but not big muffs (except for the germanium 4 big muff, obviously).

  • @screwdriva I stand corrected. Then I have two with silicon transisters and a 1978 with op amp chips.

Still, the transistor ones are always sounding different from one day to the next.

  • @1971SuperLead ya thats what ive heard from a lot of people, there was such a variance in the early production of big muffs that no two from that time period will sound the same. needless to say, this isnt, as you mentioned, the case with the op amp ones. did i also mention that im extremely jealous of your collection of vintage big muffs?

  • @screwdriva I've got a 1975 Rams head and a 1977. Both have the FS2339 transistors. The 1978 has the op amp and is what I'm sure Smashing Pumpkins used. What I have noticed is that a Boss Heavy Metal (HM-2) sounds a lot like a Big Muff. I use two of them together and they sound so cool. You can buy HM-2's for $20 regularly and must be the bargin of the century. I also like one style of Russion Big Muff. It was long and green with the "BIG MUFF" letters being upper half black and lower half white

  • @1971SuperLead well its funny you should say that, i also have an hm 2! although it doesnt sound like my big muff reissue at all ,running them together, like you said, does sound pretty killer. for me, it sounded best when the big muff was going into the hm 2, it sounds way nastier. >:) and i agree, an hm 2 can sound very similar to any vintage big muff, especially if the bass control is dimed. the russian big muffs are a funny bunch, the one you're talking about is probably my favorite model

  • you man. just got me a big muff sound like sex on fire, or rocks on fire. or soemthing. anyway rock on.

  • Gotta love the Big Muff. I have the NYC Reissue and modified it and it sounds even more awesome now than before

  • Dude, around 4:30 you're killing it!!! Really ripping up that Rams Head Muff, sick licks my friend. And as always, great videos. You deserve an award. No one on the internet is doing what you do for gear. I love the Muff and Phase 90 shoot outs. SOOO informative and you hardly say a word. You let the pedals do the talkin!!!!

  • i love my muff, got a Russian one myself, still probably one of the best pedals in my collection, and one of the cheapest ones too :)

  • @NickBlackDIN very sad to say i traded my russian muff

  • Do you know were i can the rams head? I NEEDS one!

  • @Yourmomathon a brand called stomp under foot makes a great clone

  • @blackmetalbanana Thank you

  • @Yourmomathon Build Your Own Clone has a model called the Large Beaver that can be built to either Ram's Head or Triangle Big Muff specs, both are killer and IMHO are the best clones bare none, some even think they are slightly better than the originals. These are kits that you have to build yourself but BYOC does has the option of buying them prebuilt from their approved builders.

  • @AbeBiro I Know about them but i don't like buying things on the internet but I don't know how to build one even if i got it.

  • i heard the ram's head, and then i muffed all over myself.

  • older is better hands down: not muddy, great pick sensitivity; keep the great vids comin dude! ROCK

  • what cable do you have?¿?

  • I think that they should also re release the op amp version. But I like the sound of the new one a little better.

  • The ram head version does sound a bit different, but every bit as good.I can see why it's David Gilmour's favorite. It would be cool if they issued a new version that has both the old and new circuit in the same box with a three way switch that could be switched over from one or the other or both at the same time.Hell, they could even add the wicker switch and tone bypass switch for the most versatile Muff ever made. They could call it the Big Hairy Muff!

  • @lute760 howsabout the 'Nuff Muff

  • @lute760 TALK TO EHX!!!NOW!!!

  • @lute760 thats a brilliant idea ! some of you pedal geeks out there need to get bizzee with this i'll take mine in a nice puke green !!!

  • Quit pickin' on him LOL

  • Sounds like Jack Black.

  • @manduhhxn

    Are you new here?

  • useless intrance

    they both sound good

  • useless intrance

  • You can achieve a lot of those angry Ram's Head sounds with a Way Huge Swollen Pickle. It sounds like a current big muff but a little angrier.

  • @tenaciousE21912 I totally agree. I'm waiting for my Way Huge Swollen Pickle to come in the mail. The Swollen Pickle is a very, very angry pedal on steriods

  • Hey GMD can you demo the owl strap please? Bring back the owls!

  • i like how you said "not put it back together correctly" ...BEST pedal ever made

  • What's the amp ?

  • Big Muff Rules i just dont have the good amp and cables for play it well cause it got to much dirty sound and needs a bit of compression and maybe a bit of noise reduction maybe it will loose the gain and i will need a pedal for dont lose the effect of gain oh like 3 pedals to make this bad ass sound really good :p but i really like it !

  • this plus the electric mistress and you've got Mr. Gilmour

  • hey man what year is your sg? love the color man! and the boots too ha

  • owl strappp.

  • I love them both :) i dont think either one is superior, i just think its a matter of opinion

  • am i the only one who likes the reissue better?

i guess i just prefer the muffier sound, i feel like the rams head has more of an overdrive sound

  • Oooooooohhhhhhhhhh....Rams head is WOW !

  • I'm kinda likin the reissue here

  • seriously : big muff vs lovepedal ,which one you choose?

  • muff it up hah

  • LOL yellow SG and snake shoes, you got style :D

  • i want your shoes!

  • "owl strap!" without that it would have sounded like crap probably, it's no the guitar, amp or effect, it's the badass owl strap

  • @cpage07 And the Boots.

  • Dude, What are your settings? I just can't get my 335 to sound that clean

  • They sound similar for the price difference, but the RH is better. That's why Gilmour still uses his. That said, I'm buying a RI and having it modded to RH specs. I get the better sound, the better case and a price under $100.

  • RI doesn't sound bad at all.... Rams Head just sounds better. Of course, that's what you'd expect for $70 vs. >$300

  • I emailed EHX and they said they have no plans on bringing back the Rams Head.

The NYC reissue sucks compared to the old muffs.

  • @helpdonate1 that sucks :(

  • Really though. Thumbs up for bringing a reissue of the Rams Head back in stock.

  • Ram's Head is easily my favourite Muff, they really need to reissue it.

  • i like it. i want one

  • They're just too big! I just don't have that kind of real-estate on my pedalboard.

  • @Jakeistoocool143 i guess jack white had the big muff circuit fitted into a little big muff housing

  • RAMS HEAD - sounds fuller and more transparent

CURRENT VERSION - sounds more compressed and fuzzier

***like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.***

  • Holy shit! Jack Black is that you?

  • Who cares about the big muff, it's the owl strap that creates the tone!

  • I love the smell of Big Muff Fuzz in the morning... smells like Nirvana!!!

  • getting a muff right now :) sweeeeeeet

  • owl strap lol

  • That "white coily cable" is becoming quite the legend

  • I am all for the new rams heads as long as its made in the U.S.A and the circuit is not put in that dumb D.I.Y diecast metal chassis(they make it look like some kid build it)!!!

  • Yeah! Make them again!

    Where's the petition?

The new one is harsher more "metally".

  • To me they sound very similar. You could say that the old one is a little more mellow, but you can just dial down the tone knob on a new one. For about $70, how can you go wrong? I'd have to hear them both in person to really tell if there's a big difference that would amount to over 100$ or more dollars.

  • yes please do a remake of the lambs head :)

    (rams head)

  • i fucking love you gear dude. may you forever rock n roll.

  • Don't worry about the knobs, I have the same Rams head, and I think they should be that way after I saw your video. Nice video. Rams head is much more organic sound. :)

  • Nice test! Great guitar gig, really. And you play cool, too.

Just one question: That snake boots are the complement for the overall without shirt and a cowboy hat while playing?

Anyway, with that pretty good power on your hands, the cows around the house must go running away so scared.

    Good for you!

P.S: On the next video compare your boots vs some Dr. Marten's. It would be really cool.

  • they both great sounding IMHO, only the old one is more for that classic stuff ;)

  • Definitely like the old one.

  • That knob trick was pretty common back in the day. Find your favorite settings on the pedal. Pull of the knobs and replace the with the pointers straight up. Now, when you get to a gig, just reach down and turn all three knobs straight up, and you've got your favorite settings back. That was an old school preset, before presets.

  • i really like your rug

a good rug is one of the best things in the world haha

  • The name of this Black Crowes is called Nebakanezer off of Three Snakes and One Charm. Yup I like the Rams head version better. Dude I wish I never found this guy I cant stop buying fuzz boxes. I blame Fulltone for this addiction.

  • man your voice looks like jack black

  • what tune is playing on the intro?

    love your demos man :)

  • to: mntnld

You mean to say that Youtube doesn't show an add at the beginning of the video trying to get you to buy a downloaqd of the song? Man I hate that. Anyway, Before closing the add I read that it was Black Crows, can't remember the song title now.

  • Hello, congratulations for the demonstration, and 'possible to know the name of the band that introduced the video?

Thanks Congratulations again .... I'm a fan of your videos!

  • Love the old one, but getting the new one ;D

  • I enjoy your demos of pedals. Assuming the controls are set the same (approximately) on the two units the rams head is way brighter & louder than Pi. Which at the 2:44 mark the rams head just wails on it & sounds fantastic. Taking into consideration that the big muff is already a great pedal the rams head is even cooler. Another great demo from Gearmanndude.

  • Muff... And muff.

    :D

  • was that a bouncy ball or pick at 5:02?

    hahaha

  • i like the old one better but the new old holds up pretty well

  • nvrmnd

  • u gotta turn the volume up on the old one, ram is way louder in this

  • cant you just take the knobs of of the little peg things and put em on the right way? Anyways, i thought the rams head sounded way crunchier and brighter, but the new one sounded fatter, but fuzzier and darker. I like ny ones better than the pis though, so you should do a shootout of all of em!

  • Ram KILLS it!!!

  • Definately make 'em the way they used to, in fact they should do a reissue of my three favorite muffs: triangle, ram, and early green russian sovtek.

  • I thought the new one sounded better! A little more fat and smooth.

  • Goddamn it's Jack Black.

  • i actually preferred the new one. but its hard to know how close gmd sync'd up the settings of the 2 pedals, with the funny knobs on the rams head and whatnot

  • FUCK ME that is a fit sound.

and fyi, you sound kinda like jack black

  • sound very close to me

  • goddamn Ram's Head is so lively

  • haha i love this guy

  • i like the rams head better. but i own the modern ish version mine is from the 90s

  • Dude, just pop the knobs off the vintage one and re-situate them where they should go.

  • Gearmandude i have been watching your videos for sometime n i enjoy all of it ...ur kind of music rocks its kickass. Plannin on gettin a big muff ..the Rams head pedal sounds great do u know where i can get one... anyways i even like the song at the start of this video is it yours.

Keep Rockin and makin Cool videos....

  • my fav gearmandude demo. BRING BACK THE MUFF!!

  • My Big Muff reisue sounds nothing like gearmandudes muff

  • I prefer the actual Big Muff.

  • wow, what's the song in the intro? Black Crowes? Gearmanndude, would it be to much to ask you to mention your intro songs in the description? You just happen to choose such cool songs!

  • love them both

they should seriously consider reissuing the rams head!

  • i'd be all over that petition for a ram's head (or triangle) reissue!

  • Owl strap lol

  • The Ram's Head sounds fantastic.

I have to wonder why Electro-Harmonix makes their reissue based on the V3 red/black muff, when the Ram's Head is so highly prized.

Time to get round to building my BYOC Beaver kit, I think. I've had it for months, and it's still in it's packaging...

Talking of which, gearmanndude - you still have the BYOC you demoed a while back? A head-to-head would be cool to see, I know BYOC themselves have done one, but I like how you make muffs sound...
