I use to play bass in a band when I was 16 years old and we played a lot of GFR. This one was one of our best. 16 years old! WOW! I wanna play them again.
I got this album when I was at school in one of those complicated swap deals then I ended up with the 33 rpm 7" single of Paranoid/Inside Looking Out as well. Still have the album, but the single was stolen at a party in the early 70s . Still miss it as the album is well scratched now. Also have the live album from 1970, but it is now barely playable. Nostalgic post for me.
About a week as go I learned "inside looking out" was an Animals song!!!~ I bet they do good version too. Since I got all Grand Funks early albums well after they came out, with pretty much no radio air play and no one my age to compare notes with I was in a GF info vacuum apparently, even though I played the records to death. : ).
this rocks!!! American classic rock radio has done a disservice to grand funk railroad, by only playing "we're an american band", "some kind of wonderful" and "locomotion". they were essentially a prog band, but they also shared a similar sound to other michigan based bands like the "stooges" and "mc5".
@bluestate69 Thank you! Bloody freakin shame they have not been in the Rock N Roll hall of fame LONG before now...Oh silly me! There still not in!!!!!!! Damn bloody shame! Sorry I had too comment...Michael
Well, It is still my favourite since I heard it for the 1st time way back in the 70ties. Still playing this while I am driving my 72 Le Mans Convertible. I hear my baby knocking.
Oh, yeah! The Red Album. Young boys were still digging this record well into the 1980s. Mark Farner's guitar was phantastic. It sounded like he had left it at Leigh Stephens's pad for a night or two, had it retuned by Tony Iommi, and then thrown into a pool of muck for a week. Perfect!
I've always thought that Rolling Stones "Bitch" ripped off this amazing riff - and sound by switching from neck to bridge pickup (guitar players will know what I mean). Note that Sticky Fingers came out about 2 years after this album. GFR <3
The best bass guitar album ever recorded! I was 10 and my brothers were 20 and they would play this in their bed room all day until they got tired of it and switched to C.S.N.&Y. - They gave the album to me and then I played it all day! I always loved the album cover!
Grand Funk always keeps me rocking just love their soulful rock style. There's no new great rock bands out there anymore. What happened to music? I guess it took a crap now days.I agree with rosey

Grand Funk always keeps me rocking just love their soulful rock style. There's no new great rock bands out there anymore. What happened to music? I guess it took a crap now days.
You don't hear killer bass played THIS loud any more,I'm glad I bought this album in 1970(among many many others) and played the SHIT out of it. Concert goers don't know the meaning of bass biting their asses and ears off like it was done back then. You are not gonna find another band today that had the energy or the BALLS to do what Mark,Don, and Mel did.
I am 31 years old, but the last ten years of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21th century just has made poor music, yes there are some exception, but the 50, 60, 70 and 80, those years were the best in the music industry, WHY, Because God sended the best in music, like GRAND FUNK, RARE EARTH, DOORS, BALCK SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN and so on.
Plugged into your 8-track. An anti-vibration high tech matchbook tucked in. Volume cranked high to compensate for road noise. Hard to hear over glass packs at high RPM. Sweet smells of ripening corn. Heat lightning in the distance. Miles and miles of blacktop to cover and all night to do it.
@paulschmidtart PRETTY AWESOME POST....EXCEPT FOR THE CORN, THAT COULD HAVE BEE IN NYC..THAT POST ALONG WITH THIS SONG BROUGHT BACK AWESOME MEMORIES...WELL SAID.

yeah man..had my 76 Gran Torino with glass pack muffies on it 351W CID engine, playing this album and Stevie Wonder Innervisions and Humble Pie on the 8 track....driving all night just being present you know?.... man....wow....LOL....
@paulschmidtart MMM-MMMM-MMMM Home! * track adapter where you tune in an FM station or the state of the art cassette adapter and a cassette of this in the 8 track adapter, and the match book (has to be from a cool establishment like the coolest bar in the county. Ripening corn or alfalfa, and clover. The glass packs in a 69 GMC 2500 Custom with AC PS PB & a 4 speed with a seat from a Jeep Cherokee in the back for fishing at night. Efffffffffffffffffft pft, Yeah man! good stuff! phewwww! Oh Yeah
so i'm like in 6th grade, 11 or 12 i guess, and i'm at football practice, city league, these two kids with long hair are going on about grand funk railroad. they are both popular and getting everyone jacked up about this music, they both play bass and are talking about mel schacher like he's god. so i go out and steal santana (their first), grand funk railroad (red album), and jimi hendrix (machine gun i think). grand funk became one of those bands for me that i bought their music instantly.
@AddictionbeatZ In the early 70s, it was supposed to sound trippy when you listned with headphones. It sounded like the guitar was tarveling thru your head. Kinda annoying if your not listening with headphones.
RogerioAndre..no need to apologize for no video..didn't need it back then and don't need it now. Not against video but it's really about the music on this stuff. I think that's one of the things that made that time so special, at least for me. You looked at the pictures on the album...read the lyrics maybe and used your imagination. thanx
that`s a shame that nowadays no one listen to this kind of music, im 20 from brazil, but not even distance and time will make me know what is a truly rock and roll and bullshit, GFR!!!! Terry Knight unfortunately destroyed this band, their firts album are just perfeeeect!!!! By the way, Mark have a greeeat voice!!
Boring? The Brazilian needs to put down his crack pipe, the PREMIERE AMERICAN HARD ROCK POWER TRIO, Bar none. Louder Than THE WHO. Better live concerts than Cream. MARK DON & MEL -- Living legends, baddest Bitchin' band on Planet EARTH, In 1969, they truly kicked ass out of Flint, Michigan U.S.A.
@PunkLobo - Grand Funk isn't boring. Also, Homer's favorite band is Cheap Trick, not Grand Funk Railroad. I am not judging your taste, just expressing my opinion (and one fact) like you did. Cheers man. If you have long hair and play in a heavy electric blues trio like me, you definitely relate to these guys.
@ogphil3 homer simpson aka { matt groening } favorite band is GRAND FUNK,, every episode with rock stars he slips grand funk in there,,, the WHO,, mettalica,, and lollapalooza.. 3 different episodes he mentions grand funk.
video or not...truly great song...The critics hated them...but the people knew better...simple is not always bad...In their prime no one was any better...and their 2nd lp was a "killer"
I just said my opinion, I think this song is boring. Plus, I'm not a wannabee. Just cuz I tought this was boring you have to do personal attacks? Come on. Its my fuckin opnion. USA is full of racist and xenophobe morons. Whats next? Going to say that you gonna blown my country? This isn't a bad band, its just boring song.
@PunkLobo why dont you check out ,,american band live 1974,, or shea stadium live, Im your captain,,or INSIDE LOOKING OUT on PBS.. those are their best.
Led Zeppelin come later than GFR...this is the song I'm used to listen when I'm in high school in 1969/70...if I'm not wrong...GFR & MARK FARNER CANNOT BE SEPARATED...GREAT..
In fact Led Zeppelin's Manager threatened he would Kill Grand Funk Railroads Manager if he didn't stop them from playing because the Crowd wanting to hear them instead of Led Zeppelin.
Foot Stompin Music from E Pluribus Funk was their best 70s high tempo, then my second 70s personal favorite was Some Kind Of Wonderful, then Locomotion. But their '69 stuff like this was their best ever. Led Zeppelin and Other Groups Managers were scared of them because they were so good they were stealing the Concerts opening up for those Groups.
you know what? it's fun to separate the sounds of Mark, Don and Mel on this song; there are times when Mark sounds like he overlaps Mel, times when Mel solos and times when Mark plays inside Mel's bass...
can't figure out how Mark's guitar sounds so fuzzy, though, lol.
HA! that's great! well, yes they play(ed) with a lot of heart, but, well, the equipment is another story... stuff of musician's legends. the rumors vary, but one roadie said that the tubes in the back of Mel's amplifiers were always smoking or on fire during their concerts!
isn't it funny how GF were well thought of by lots of other musicians and roadies, but less so by The Industry?
How'd they get that sound? West amps, made in Lansing Michigan by Dave West.Mark used a Hollow body Messinger Guitar,Mel used a Fender Jazz Bass with a Gibson EBO Humbucker on it.On his amp the Bass switch clicks when you turn it counter clockwise sending a 12 DB boost across the front end of the amp.Yes at first they went thru a lot of tubes on the Fillmores. They ran their cabinets at 2 ohms. They carried literaly a warehouse of replacement speakers.
GRAND FUNK..... fuck yes xD

The reason why bands from the 50-60-70's were good is, 'cause they
didn't need to much gadgets to produce music and to perform.
Their music was pure and solid and made to last.
Only thing I can't stand is that, some wannabe's use these
songs and kill'em.

No band at that time - Stones Beatles Zep Sabbath HENDRIX(even not dead)
and every last band that appeared at Woodstock was a bigger band
than these guys - with little airplay at that point - word of mouth
is how you found a new band. Power sheer Power - and crappy
equip at the time too

Amazing! This band taught me how to write songs! Keep it simple!

Led Zeppelin and Other Groups Managers were scared of them because they were so good they were stealing the Concerts opening up for those Groups.

you know what? it's fun to separate the sounds of Mark, Don and Mel on this song; there are times when Mark sounds like he overlaps Mel, times when Mel solos and times when Mark plays inside Mel's bass...
can't figure out how Mark's guitar sounds so fuzzy, though, lol.
the song gets better every time i hear it

How'd they get that sound? Cheap equipment and a lot of heart!
plangentmusic 2 years ago
@plangentmusic
HA! that's great! well, yes they play(ed) with a lot of heart, but, well, the equipment is another story... stuff of musician's legends. the rumors vary, but one roadie said that the tubes in the back of Mel's amplifiers were always smoking or on fire during their concerts!
isn't it funny how GF were well thought of by lots of other musicians and roadies, but less so by The Industry?
astronomius 2 years ago
@plangentmusic
