Let's see...hyperbolic orbit which means this is its first, and only pass through the Solar System. It will fly around the Sun and then off into deep space. At closest approach to Earth it's still going to only be a magnitude 6.5 (dimmer than naked eye visibility), which means it's -tiny-, and it will still be over 100 times farther away than the Moon is. Should be an interesting show through a telescope, but that's about it.

I believe it is close enough now to have a gravitational effect on earth, and weak fault lines are being effected. This is new updated information from Leonid Elenin. He is the one who found comet Elenin. On April 8th at his observatory they saw comet Elenin had increased in size. It's now 80,000 km!!!
@Sunshine4unme7 You left out a very important piece of information ... 80000 kms is the diameter of the coma or ( atmosphere ) of the comet and that this increase in size is most likely due to the superposition of the tail. At th time the observation was made the tail was directly behind the observed comet. Not saying that it isnt big, but its quite unlikely that the coma is that large.
Alright, upon second glance of the link, I noticed that the three measurements are the equator, meridian, and pole. That is, the distance around horizontally; the distance around vertically; and the distance through the center from pole to pole. So as far as how big around this thing is, it's just about an eighth the size of earth or about 3300 miles around the equator. Being that it's a sphere, that means the other measurements are pretty similar.
So am I supposed to multiply the three gigantic numbers by each other to determined how big around this thing is? 6378.1x6378.1x6356.8 km right? That equals 258,595,638,608.848 km around. Which is 160,683,880,269 miles. That is 6,400,000 times larger than earth which is 24901 miles around. That means this thing is the size of 6.4 million earths pushed together. I think you may see this thing by now. Perhaps I don't understand the math.

Elenin size = 3,963 miles Earth size = 7,918 miles Moon size = 2,159 miles Venus size = 7,257 miles Oct. 17, 2011 Elenin will be .0232 AU from earth1AU = 92,955,807 miles.Thats the distance from the sun to the earth .0232 AU = 2,161,763 miles.The distance from earth to moon on average is 238,857 miles For comparison Venus is the closest planet to earth at it's closes point is only 38,000,000 km or 23,612,105 miles from earth

It's better than guessing what might happen with these space objects and if they are what we're told they are. Since we don't know we can fall back on plan A and expect anything. @hitobedut Be aware that we cannot be sure what's going to happen to the comets as they pass by the Sun. That's when they get really activated and orbits can be perturbed. I believe the comet is coming and we need to watch out. That is all. It should be a great view through our telescopes. I hope nothing happens and that's what usually happens anyway. You can believe what you want doesn't matter to me, others here haven't taken my word for it they did their own research as should you. Our extreme weather in the last 6 months isn't because of Global Warming, gravitational pull creating eathquakes and warming of the outer planets and their moons is a tell tale sign. JPL put's this object at 2x the size of our moon. Mass is unknown.

I believe it is close enough now to have a gravitational effect on earth, and weak fault lines are being effected. Japan will probably loose a lot of coastline going into the ocean and with that a huge wave to wipe hawaii and much of the west coast. If enough water goes far inland the mear weight would most likely cause the new madrid or san adreas faults to shift.

This is new updated information from Leonid Elenin. He is the one who found comet Elenin. On April 8th at his observatory they saw comet Elenin had increased in size. It's now 80,000 km!!!

@Sunshine4unme7 You left out a very important piece of information ... 80000 kms is the diameter of the coma or ( atmosphere ) of the comet and that this increase in size is most likely due to the superposition of the tail. At th time the observation was made the tail was directly behind the observed comet. Not saying that it isnt big, but its quite unlikely that the coma is that large.

Alright, upon second glance of the link, I noticed that the three measurements are the equator, meridian, and pole. That is, the distance around horizontally; the distance around vertically; and the distance through the center from pole to pole. So as far as how big around this thing is, it's just about an eighth the size of earth or about 3300 miles around the equator. Being that it's a sphere, that means the other measurements are pretty similar.

So am I supposed to multiply the three gigantic numbers by each other to determined how big around this thing is? 6378.1x6378.1x6356.8 km right? That equals 258,595,638,608.848 km around. Which is 160,683,880,269 miles. That is 6,400,000 times larger than earth which is 24901 miles around. That means this thing is the size of 6.4 million earths pushed together. I think you may see this thing by now. Perhaps I don't understand the math.

If the tail hits us,which it will.We are all in very big trouble.Research how big it's tail is and look at it's orbital path and how close it will come.The mainstream media is not touching this subject.Oct 23 it will be next to us but in november it's tail and us will collide.

Heres something interesting, i've been doing some calculations. Everyones looking at distance from earth, i looked at distance from our sun, and at its closest elenin will be .482 AU thats 44,804,699 miles on september 11, 2011. Fron 9th to 10th i calculated speed at 464,779 miles a day or 19,366 miles/per/hr.
