@brassbandadjudicator Yes you are correct. Certainly the solo cornet part is definately marked senza vib and that's how I played it. Maybe it's simply because it'a a recording and not on the actual contest stage that they ignored the markings, bit like the basses putting in the odd subtle pedal whereas they wouldn't on the stage.
@anniemur1 As a Greenfield lad myself, (ex Boarshurst 1970's) I hope they do, but don't count the old chickens just yet. It's not the easiest of pieces to pull off. Good luck though.
@ff0667 ..And that my friend is exactly how I first came across this piece, chosen as the test piece for the nationals way back in the 1980's. It still ranks as one of my all time favourites, I love listening to it and love performing it. Good luck to you and your band.
Ralph Vaughan Williams, Holst and Percy Grainger were the cream of the crop when they wrote for the golden age of the brass or "military bands". I hope and pray for a successor and resurgence for what is and was a wonderfully pure and ethereal sound. Here in North America many similar bands use trumpets instead of coronets and the sound is not so melodious and well integrated to my ears.
Why have the players and conductor ignored all of the senza vib markings throughout figure M to R
