  • The amazing thing about Murrow crippling McCarthyism wasn't his editorializing, it was the fact he let McCarthy hang himself with his own erratic words and deeds. Amazing what you could do with the news before all of the networks starting cowering to sponsors.

  • @creepycraig73

There have been a lot of comments on this video but you sure GET IT.

Yes, Murrow used McCarthy's own words and deeds.

You also wrote, "Amazing what you could do with the news before all of the networks starting cowering to sponsors."

True. But a reminder that back in the 50's there was just ABC, CBS and NBC. That made for a HUGE audience. Same with newspapers.

Nowadays no network/internet-source has that kind of massive following. All too fragmented now...

  • Murrow was just another mindless liberal in a long line of mindless liberals that make up the mainstream media. He deserves neither respect nor admiration. If he were broadcasting today, thankfully he would be exposed for who he really was since we now have alternate media sources to balance out the liberal bias. In Murrow's day mainstream liberal bias was all the people had for news sources.Murrow's era was truly the Dark Ages of journalism.May it stay forever buried along with him.

  • @fredrickausterlitz

"Murrow was just another mindless liberal in a long line of mindless liberals" and "Murrow's era was truly the Dark Ages of journalism.May it stay forever buried along with him."

Um. You need to turn off Fox (non)News and seek out a doctor for some meds. I'm sure there's something for your pathology.

  • @MISSISSAUGAWATCH Another mindless comment from a mindless Conservative....probably does not even know who Tailgunner Joe was.....

  • McCarthy was right in the 1940's and the 1950's and McCarthy is still right today in 2010!! The person doing the voice over for this video is 100000% wrong period! McCarthy was a great man indeed! A++++ The left wing and or liberals will always hate America! If you don't like America and if you do don't like Capitalism then you need to move out of America now and move into a communist or a socialist country!

  • @NOBULLSPIN1

"The left wing and or liberals will always hate America! "

Hey, that's quite the LIE to crap out what with an alias like "NOBULLSPIN1"

    Keep lyin'!

  • McCarthy never quizzed nobody about his personal ideas, he quizzed them if they were on the payroll of the Kremlim, and never spoted nobody wrong, but of course to know this you have to read a little.

  • @alnitemike

"never quizzed nobody"? "never spoted nobody wrong"?!

And then you write, "but of course to know this you have to read a little."

It's clear that you read "a little", and are barely literate.

What you need to Get It, is to read --and research, a LOT!

    My pity to you.

  • Edward R. Murrow, spoke words that should be handed down as legacy to every generation of Americans. Joseph Wershba, CBS News wrtiter, editor and correspondent.

  • I'd sure like to see McCarthy's appearance on "See It Now." Ya know, I'm quite surprised some of that stuff has lasted this long!

As for what today's journalists are like? First off, you can't even call them journalists! I may not have grown up during Murrow's time, hell, my parents weren't even around then, but I know for a fact that Murrow had gutts! Not many so-called journalists would do what he did! Not many would publically speak out for what's right!

    R.I.P Edward R. Murrow!

  • Mine too - brave gent, proper man........thanks for posting.

  • The Closest Thing to Edward R. Murrow today is Keith Olbermann.

  • It took a lot of courage for Murrow to stick his neck out for what he new was right. He showed his bravery throughout the war and that experience served him well, when dealing with mcarthy. It's when a person has compassion for life that they might concider communism, but human nature will always fuck it up. Capitalism is a house of cards by an open window, but I don't know of anything better

  • Best description of capitalism I've ever heard or read. All you say is deeply true.

    Thanks Mis Sis

  • "No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices."

    ~ Edward R. Murrow's speech to staff, March 9, 1954

  • no problem,we all have our opinions, apologize for jumping to conclusions

  • Hey again, playsetman.

No problem, friend. Guess we all jump to conclusions at one time or another. I've done so now and then.

    Take care and peace.

  • are you a simpleton?IF mccarthy would have continued communist would have been exposed, spies arrested .Murrow stooped this and helped inbolden communism in south east asia-ALSO murrows ilk also kept us from having a shorter all out war in vietnam which would have ended in victory ,instead of prolonging the war-when someone tries to post a comment you have to "approve it" which is censorship-Yeah,it makes sense to anyone that comprehends about 6th grade level

  • Hi again playsetman,

    Thanks for clarifying.

Regarding "cencorship", I approve all comments moronic or otherwise --as is proof here if you read them all.

I do censor though but ONLY for profanity with no substance. Example would be a "*** you"

Or a "**** off" with nothing else.

However a "**** off. IF mccarthy would have continued communist would have been exposed, spies arrested .Murrow stooped this and helped inbolden communism in south east asia" would be approved.

  • Hi again playsetman .

Let me cut-and-paste the two comments you just wrote:

"collect film to get rid of mccarthey and stop exposing communist-communism was not a threat?oddly.murrow probably caused vietnam "

    and:

"sorry communist, censoring people comments-think you can make people think everyone that sees this agrees with you-mccarthey was fighting people like you "

    Please read both twice.

Um. Let me ask you. Do they make ANY sense to you?

  • sorry communist, censoring people comments-think you can make people think everyone that sees this agrees with you-mccarthey was fighting people like you

  • collect film to get rid of mccarthey and stop exposing communist-communism was not a threat?oddly.murrow probably caused vietnam

  • Hi playsetman, you wrote:

    "oddly.murrow probably caused vietnam "

"caused vietnam"? That's oddly, all right.

  • Bill Oreilly lol Bill probably agrees more with MCcarthy than Murrow. Republican bullshit goes back a long way huh?

  • For someone who hated communism, McCarthy acted allot like Stalin.

  • Hi there RichardSwayne,

That's the point about extremists from either end of the spectrum. McCarthy was very right of the political spectrum. Stalin. Left. Hitler. Right.

    Same-same.

  • WOW, aaaredskin, Wow! Never heard of Edward R. Murrow paired with Bill O'Reilly in any kind of context.

WOW "Seems as though Edward Murrow was the ORIGINAL Bill O'Reilly"... WOW. I don't quite know what to say.

    Bill O'Reilly, huh?

  • To compare him to Bill O'Reilly is ignorance of who Murrow was. O'Reilly is just a pompas ass who just yells and abuses people. The only person who is close to Murrow is Keith Olbermann. McCarthy should've been censured. Murrow is a hero by not being afraid to speak out like that in that time. And it's so true that McCarthy just exploited the fear to stop the "New Deal" programs from FDR and he used that fear to get people on his side. He was just a little cry baby.

  • Ahhhhhh Eddie Murrow's inflated image gets a fluffing from his own network.

The real Ed Murrow was a liar. He lied about the Annie Lee Moss case and later admitted it to Les Crane. We now know that McCarthy was RIGHT and Murrow was so wrong he had to make up the "facts."

  • Hey there, Stronghurst,

You wrote, "We now know that McCarthy was RIGHT and Murrow was so wrong he had to make up the "facts."

So, show us the facts to back up your statement that a) McCarthy was right and b) that Murrow invented facts about McCarthy.

Documentation through Freedom of Information as opposed to "facts" from some "McCarthy was Right" website.

  • Seems as though Edward Murrow was the ORIGINAL Bill O'Reilly, huh?

  • My father was a friend of Ed Murrow at CBS. And I trusted my father, with good reason, and Murrow, with good reason, who I met more than once when I was a little kid.

Yes, Murrow had an ego. Yes, he was sometimes (perhaps often) wrong.

But your attitude and ignorance is is exactly what he was fighting to conquer.

No, you lose. And don't even try. Keep your little pocket knife pocketed.

  • "If none of us had ever read

a 'dangerous' book or had a friend

who was 'different' or never joined an organization that advocated 'change' we'd all be the kindof people Joe McCarthy wants. We're gonna go with the story, because the terror is in this room." (Taken from the screenplay.) Journalism... newsreporting.. nay, citizenship at its finest. RIP Sir Murrow.

  • Actually I am being a bit too philosophical about the media. It has become the most destructive force in the country. It runs elections, it destroys education, it destroys the mind itself.. all in the name of profits. Stop the profit motive, make the media non profit..and the manipulation and distortion begin to lighten up.

  • Well said, ehunter. This election year has been the first for me that I've paid so much attention to. I backed Hillary (don't berate me for this; she's moot now), and can tell you first hand that from the get-go, I could not have imagined such contempt and disrespect being heaved upon a candidate. We'd have treated Hannibal Lecter or Adolf Hitler with more respect. I for one still reel with digust at MSNBC, et al. CNN was the "mildest," yet just as guilty for one-sided politicking, catapulting.

  • McCarthy was a bumbler and a boor. But the idea that the freedom to criticize is beneficial smacks of the perpetual adolescent who is sure the adult world is always "controlling" him. Also, more importantly, havent we seen freedom of the press since Morrows time abused far more than Govt power? From nightly manufactured sensationalism and bogus "controversy" to

outright lying to influence events ala Dan Rather, the press has become the #1 destructive force in the country.

  • Hey again, ehunter2. Agree 100%. "freedom to criticize" can smack of "perpetual adolescent" but not because he's sure the adult world is always controlling him (The Power is always controlling/manipulating) but because "freedom to criticize" unfortunately also begets irresponsible allegations. As for your comments regarding the press and media, "News" today is what wrestling is to sports. Bogus. Manufactured. BS-galloping. And no one would scorn today's press/media more than Murrow himself.

  • I suscribe to Marshall McLuhans assertion that "the medium is the message" ie. electronic media by its very nature (millisecond bursts of imagery that circumvent the rational mind)completely shapes the message far more than the content. Murrow believed that he could convey ideas, content, serious thinking via TV. But the nature of the electronic media took over. TV shattered the attention span necessary for serious thinking. Murrow didnt forsee that.

  • Hey again "ehunter2". You wrote, "TV shattered the attention span necessary for serious thinking. Murrow didnt forsee that." Agreed. As you know, Murrow transferred his radio-reporting into "this new thing called television". Now? To be honest, I have no patience for television. I just can't trust its "news". And I'd rather conduct my own research through Freedom of Information. I'm just sick of the he-said-they-said-slop. I yearn for reporters who are RESEARCHERS who view News as a Calling.

  • True investigative reporting is hard work. It takes months of information gathering and alot of insight to get anywhere near the truth. TV doesnt have the time and is eager for fast profits..so it fakes it. Thats why the 6oclock news seems so "canned". Set stories with set morals over and over. Sometimes it backfires on them like Jayson Blair and Dan Rather where the reporter just stays at his desk and invents an entire story, that sticks to formula, and seems "real" but is total fabrication.

  • Agreed, plus something else. Remember how The Press was supposed to be the Defenders of Democracy? HAHAHAHAHAHAAHhahaa... *snork*. Hate to say it but now the torch has been passed to citizens. And yes, now it's citizens who have to endure "months of information gathering" even if they don't have the skills/insight of professional reporters. Trouble is, that a citizen hasn't the traction that a member of "traditional" media can wield. Still. What can you do when there's no attention span?

  • What has happened is a bit of a miracle..in the form of the internet. From 1950-2000 the

paradigm was BroadCast News...and I think the worst thing about it was that the viewer was utterly passive. They "broadcast" - you listened. If you had a question, or thought they were being evasive..tough..you just had to sit there. The internet allows the individual to talk back, question, form his own blog. The fact that we met and are talking would never have happened under the old "Broadcast" mode.

  • Sorry to burst everyones liberal bubble

but Murrow was wrong..McCarthy was right

The really sad thing about McCarthy is that he was more right than he knew. There were hundreds of Soviet agents in the US Govt.

From Alger Hiss right up to Lauchlin Currie advisor to Roosevelt. Venona transcripts were so Top Secret they werent made public to 1992 or so. These were decoded Soviet

transmissions that named hundreds of agents some of which havent been identified to this day.

  • Hi there, ehunter2. Murrow never questioned that there were spies/agents inside the US. Just like right now I wouldn't be surprised if there are hundreds of Al Queda sympathizers working their dirt. That's not the point.

    This is.

"We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home." Edward R. Murrow

P.S. Some of the best enemy agents in the US government right now are loyal Americans --bumbling incompetents to spectacular incompetents.

  • Murrow was one of a kind and as IKE once said about his men in WW II, "we will not see their kind again". Well HIS kind in today's mainsteam jouralizm is sadly and truly missing.

  • I have a suspicion that the people here that feel Murrow was not a hero, are young and full of idealism. Murrow took on McCarthy and at that time meant that HE could have been destroyed by McCarthy. Thats a hero in my view. Where are todays hero's?

  • WHY IS IT THAT THESE BRAVE TRUELY BRAVE AMERICANS DONT BECOME HOUSEHOLD NAMES, AND KNOWN BY EVERYONE, I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT MR. MURROW AND THAT IS BECAUSE ANOTHER GREAT PATRIOT SAID on his show "where are the EDWARD R. MURROW'S OF TODAY TO FIGHT THE FEAR WE ARE GRIPPED WITH TODAY!"

  • It's because there are 3 kinds of education you get. What you learn in school,What you learn in life through living, and what you seek out and get for yourself.....

  • And I just finished reading "Eats Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss. subtitled "The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation." LOL

  • I heard of that book. Isn't it GREAT? There are multi-million dollar contracts scuttled because someone didn't put in a comma.

And I love the "eats shoots and leaves". I recall another that went "no price too large". and how punctuation there can make all the difference.

    Best wishes,

    MISSISSAUGA WATCH

  • It's amazing what you can splice together when you edit to suit your agenda...E.R. MUrrow..a real horses ass.

  • That should be "horse's".

  • Thank you. How careless of me.

  • Peace and Best Wishes,

    MISSISSAUGAWATCH

  • Sorry for posting twice. I guess I'm awaiting censorship, right?

  • Hi there, gore53.

I'm not sure what you mean by "awaiting censorship". Posting twice, when it happens to me, is the result of a slow connection and me thinking my comments didn't "take" the first time.

    As for what you wrote:

"Yeah he was great, but for what? The media for the most part is nothing more than a branch of the Democrat Party. Wolf Blitzer, Hillary's lap poodle, would make Edward R. Murrow hurl big chunks."...please see next message. Thanks for your comments.

  • Yeah he was great, but for what? The media for the most part is nothing more than a branch of the Democrat Party. Wolf Blitzer, Hillary's lap poodle, would make Edward R. Murrow hurl big chunks.

  • Hi again, gore53. You wrote that Edward R. Murrow "was great, but for what?"

Because more than fifty years after "See It Now", Mr. Murrow STILL SETS THE STANDARD for journalists *and* us, gore53.

The media are pathetic --that's why people are becoming citizen-reporters (Bloggers). We HUNGER for the truth.

"Yeah he was great, but for what?"

Murrow is a daily reminder of the media's obligations to us and how pathetically they fail. That's for what.

    Best wishes.

    MISSISSAUGA WATCH

  • america owes this man

  • I share your feelings about 'City Halls'

Murrow was one of my heros as well...spoke up for the little guy and fought corruption...50's TV on CBS B & W...check out his 'Freedom Speech'...I am using it in my efforts to wake up the media in TO

  • "wake up media in TO"?...

Used to be a time when media woke citizens up.

Now it's like citizens have to be the "media".

  • I know 9/hr isnt minimum wage but it sure ain't no living wage either yet i speek perfekt angleesh I tink!

  • LinuxWiz83 you wrote, "i will not let you knock someone that is releated to me even know i never known". Fine with us. After all, Murrow fought for Free Speech and you're free to it. Me, I respect Murrow so much I'll allow people to knock him in this Comment section. I believe that's the way he'd want it to be. Edward R. Murrow was a Champion of Free Speech and set The Standard for Journalism. That means giving people who knock him a space on here too.

  • First off now i seen this video i will tell you guys now i will not let you knock someone that is releated to me even know i never known but that still does not change that i am Murrow and always will be. So think twice before you talk about peoples family, oh and his name is Edward R. Murrow, the last name is not his first name so call him by what he is. That is like classing all Murrow's into one person.

  • Murrow. what a subversive nut-job! McCarthy tried to save us from the red manace, and all you kooks idolize murrow like some kind of massiah! we need another man like McCarthy RIGHT NOW to weed out these sleeper cels and put this war on terror with in our borders to rest for good!

  • Love your description of Murrow as "massiah".

    PERFECT. Thanks for the chuckle.

  • People need realize the relation of that particular speech to everything political going on today in america

  • The white house is run byb idiots like mccarthy. The hunt for terrorists today is what the witch hunt of commies were in the 50's...

  • hahahaha, ohh that's rich. McCarthy created an envoirnment of fear by going after people who he believed where communists because they read something he deemed 'communist' or interacted with those deemed 'communist'. how about we try to solve the problems by fighting crime and strengthening our borders instead of rooting out 'sleeper cells', which are in reality people with an opinion different than yours! thanks for the laugh!

  • The fact of the matter is the good senator was right. There were communists all over the place. According to declassified Soviet archives, we now know for certain that Alger Hiss was a Soviet agent. Even when faced with the facts, liberals will hide and not do the right thing. Lillian Hellman and Paul Robeson never condemned Stalin - even when they discovered that he had murdered 30 - 60 MILLION people. God help us from "true believers." The Kool—Aid must taste good!

  • Can't agree with you more.

"God help us from 'true believers.'"

  • Morrow, Kronkite, and the people they worked with had so much guts, intelligence, and tenacity. They are heroes of the Fourth Estate, and are astounding symbols of how the Fourth Estate can be so vital to a democracy.

  • It Murrow not Morrow there is a difference

  • I remember Ed Murrow. He was a hero and we need one now.

  • Murrow's makes McCarthy sounds like Archie Bunker.

  • Agreed. Yet, as I look around? We need such a Journalist-Champion every bit as much now.

  • John Stewart maybe?

  • iggy2012,

I really like Jon Stewart and I rarely miss a Daily Show. But remember Jon Stewart has writers, producers etc.

Murrow was the writer, reporter, news analyst --he set the programming for CBS's "See It Now".

Jon Stewart would also be the first to say, his Daily Show isn't the news. Us-fans watch him because CNN/FOX et al don't report the news either.

  • Keith Olbermann. Look at his Special Comments. He even pays Murrow tribute by using his famous sign-off.

  • One of the most heroic, If not the most, Journalists of all time.

  • nice.

  • A heor
