They sound pretty good! I remember when they first appeared on SNL. We thought it was a joke in 1977. But Devo, The Talking Heads, Ultravox all got their start that year.
I met DEVO in 1977 at the Fab Mab in S.F. We were their for band. Mark Mothersbaugh, or however you spell his name, was one of the nicest people. He wanted to trade my mini-moog for his. Some of his keys were kaputt. He also wanted my red star pin from the USSR which was the name of our band. He was a very cool, down to earth guy. I enjoyed meeting him. Jerry too. He was more business like. We took a piss together and talked about his band right before they got famous. Great people, DEVO
They do seem very cool and down to earth? I think they only put on that weird attitude/ sarcastic, "we're from another planet"..act , just to fuck with people? Well, it works ,right??
When I met them they were sleeping in some promoter's office while on tour. Yeah, Mark was down to earth. Jerry was arrogant but they were just a band from Ohio and a good one. I felt good that they made it. They had a message and they weren't playing an alien number. They were trying to show us how we've de-evolved. Just look where we are now. Devo went platinum beyond their wildest dreams. But they are brilliant and deserved it. A bunch of nerds making it rich. I say yes to them.
Mothersbaugh has been making music for TV, films, radio and video games since 1990 including Rugrats, The Life Aquatic, Zak and Daxter and more. DEVO even did ads for Honda Scooters, Pioneer Laser Discs and Miller beer way before this.
I thought Devo was associated with nerds and geeks. Why'd they devolve themselves for a big overpriced, overhyped brand name?
denshiblocks is right; Devo used to be against rabid commercialism. Nothing wrong with selling products and services, but these post-post-modern men have jumped the shark. Especially if they were nerds and figured out what's inside the pretty case...
I'm not sure if you understand or not... there are Mongoloids and there are the mongoloids referred to in the Devo song and since I REALLY don't want to be offensive, I'm going to assume you don't know about the song... and just say sorry...
There was an article in Mac Addict about how Mark Mothersbaugh uses a Mac to compose and record his music. So it's not like they're endorsing something they don't actually use themselves. And I (have to, at work) listen to a lot of kid's music, much of it based on '60s/folkie/hippie nonsense: Disney's DEV2.0 was one of the most gloriously subversive children's albums EVER, make no mistake.
denshiblocks, have you ever seen a movie called "Resurrection'? Well, I'm gonna tell you what you need to hear: "You missed the point. You missed the whole damn point." Hey, maybe Devo should have stayed in their basement in Akron where their messages, ideas, philosophies, mythologies, images and ideals would remain pure. Take a good look at the lyrics to Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA. "We must sacrifice ourselves." Now sit down and be quiet.
I was there at the macworld party.... was fuckin sick! I got in and I was under 21. A chick spilt her drink on me and gave me her free drink tickets... I gave em back to her and told her to please go to the bar and buy me the Vodka Special they had. Turned out to be an awesome night. THen the hookers from next door were waiting out the front and that was just hilarious... ahaha
The best part of their performance was when Booji Boy told everyone that computers were turning people into mice and they should go home and throw their computers out the window!
devo WERE superb, now they are the biggest sell-out tools in history. disney, apple, dell, nike, johnson&johnson have all bought a piece. they proved de-evolution by their own career path.
You are the subject of many DEVO songs, denshiblocks. Your idiocracy is blinding. BLINDING. Yeah... many many artists make art and do not seek at some point to make INCOME from it. Just like YOU work for free, right? Oh. Wait. You likely don't work. Look, get off welfare. GEt a life. Maybe YOU will have value some day too. Doubtful. Stupid folks like you just get more retarded over time. In that case, just die. Now. You have my permission. Do it quick. Rid us of your stupidity. You just suck air
oh, i bring home the bacon, mongolloyd. its devotees like you who make me sick - you can't even see you are worshiping a band that sold out its own principles (and fans) for the last 20 years. you ARE society's fools. bet you LOVE dev2.0 don't you?
No. I do not WORSHIP DEVO. Moron. No, you are much too stupid to be employable, beyond stall cleaner at a slaughterhouse. Much too stupid. The only bacon you bring home is probably stolen, or bought with foodstamps. As stated, DEVO wrote their songs about morons JUST LIKE YOU. Be proud. You are an inspiration for idiots worldwide! Fly your stupid flag high!
Don't talk about things of which you do not understand. You only look more moronic, LUNKHEAD.
Mr. Bonzai's is better.

It sounds so sterile compared to footage from the late 70s and early 80s. No energy, no animation, no rawness.

denshiblocks 3 years ago
A sell-out is someone who throws away his principles for greed. Typically, sell-outs cash in and don't produce.
DEVo were never against making money to begin with (they were selling suits, energy domes and even muzak on casette tapes!)
So what the heck are you babbling about? The fact that they still go on stage and play hard is proof enough that they are the opposite of sell-outs.
trebort 3 years ago
Totally correct my friend.
devoelaine1 3 years ago
go on stage at corporate events for apple and nike? yeah, really sticking to principles opposed to greed. DEVO: born in akron, died in L.A.

i was there too ... drummer was waay off with the wrong fills on so many songs, and off the beat on some of the others as well
was a great time none the less
wllm500 4 years ago
well, there isn't a lot of clips from the macworld show but from what I can hear, yeah the drummer is a bit sloppy.
Turns out it's not Josh Freese on drums (that guy is amazing) but his drum tech!!! Neil Taylor.
