I hated this level but I finally beat it with one life left. Place three laser towers where they would be most useful. I upgraded them twice by the end of the level and left them at that. Place three vortex towers in the middle. Place three missile towers around the level, and each vortex tower should be linked to one laser and one missile tower. Upgrade as you see fit, and place missile towers like crazy for the last level.
I've heard rumors that there is a difference in difficulty between the iPhone 4 version of the game and other versions. Supposedly the iPhone 4 version is harder. Looks like he is playing on a 3G or 3GS, which might explain why it is easier for him.
The main thing is being careful about when you upgrade the towers. I played this level dozens and dozens of times before completing it without loss of lives.
I failed a lot of times before I could do it like this. The main thing is to keep an eye on all the critters and work out the optimum time to build up the defences without them getting past!
