  • :) thanks for the help man. That was hell trying to figure it out your video saved me big time.

  • thank you - excelellant job

  • I tried this process last night at it worked great.

  • Very nice gun! those Russians are beautiful.I would take a Russian over a Yugo or Chinese anyday.

  • Thanks for the pretty clear video. My only question is how to take the stock off.

  • My lever to release the bolt cover doesnt open should i grease it or what?

  • wow dude his recoil spring must suck ass because mine is a bitch to pull back down

  • good vid

  • perfect...thanks

  • i wana thank you for making this vid. i was totally stuck at the gas rode. i couldnt have figured it out with yer help. THANK YOU.

  • Who are the sheeply disarming cowards who flagged this video??

  • Who knows. Friggin annoying.

  • Do i need to field strip the rifle to just clean it? or can i just run the rod through the barrel(no homo lol or "thats what she said"xD)couple of times to get the gun powder out of the grooves?

  • If the ammo is non-corrosive, you can usually just swab the bore. It is generally a good idea to get the gas tube, piston, etc. cleaned out every once in a while.

  • I have a sks tactical and I use 30 round clips and I have heard some people say they have had trouble with the 30 rounders and prefer the 10 rounders instead but I havnt had any problem with my 30 rounders has anyone else had problems?

  • The problem is that when they get modded to hold a 30-round clip, it's very easy to botch the job.

  • stupid question i know but

    2 things i need a hand with

    A) taking off my bayonet

    B) removing the barrel

    Any advise?

  • great vid. Im scoring an SKS mext week. This vid is exactly what I was lookin for! Thanks!

  • who the fuck flags this video?

  • also does anyone know about that cosmoline stuff and how to get rid of it?

  • I would use a blow dryer and just blow hot air on all the metal parts of your rifle until the cosmoline starts to oze off then you can just take a rag and wipe it off.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice video, really helps..but wat do u mean by a "duckbill" magazine? because i just bought an SKS and i dont no much about it. also why is a "duckbill" magazine unreliable?

  • Hey Socki2ya chill out man, anybody that has been around guns or has half a brain knows to check the gun to see if its loaded. Give the guy a break. Do you need step by step instructions on whiping your ass? Pullnshoot thanks for the vid, that is one nice sks, I plan on getting one soon and installing a tactical stock.

  • Thank you. My husband just got me one. I'm currently all over the net learning about it.

  • Your husband is a good man :)

  • Already addressed before.

Dropping the bottom of the magwell and sliding back the bolt, sans the recoil spring assembly, essentially does the same thing.

Not excusing my lack of foresight nor am I endorsing not checking the chamber but your comment and the wording is unwarranted.

Quit being an angry little man and for the sake of us all, think before you type.

  • He probaley couldnt pull the trigger.

  • great vid man and the rifle damn that might be the nicest one ive ever seen.

  • Is the magazine not detachable on this rifle? What about the 30 round mags that are made for these? Are those unable to be used on this?

  • The normal SKS has a fixed 10rd magazine.

There are some that use detachable AK-47 magazines made by Norinco but they are relatively uncommon.

There are "duckbill" magazines for the SKS that are generally unreliable and not recommended for that reason.

  • thinking of buying one with a detachable magazine..what you guys think?

  • unless it is the designated chinese model SKS-D the general consensus is dont do it.

  • Nice finish!

  • Hi,

I just received/bought a yugo SKS 59/66. I am liking it already. Can you do a video of full dissasembly and full cleaning? My SKS still has the cosmoline all over it (nasty crap!!!)

  • nice vid

    good job

    5*****

  • Great video. Thanks.

  • hey whats up guys can u explain the gas piston to me, i have chinese polytech ak- 47 and i noticed that the only thing that goes into the gas tube on mine is the front end of the bolt carrier. whats up with the gas piston?

  • Nice video. I'm embedding it on my gun owners website for all to see.

  • better and cheaper then the kalshnikov

    PALIN 2012

  • Better? It has 10 rounds, is semi-automatic, has a tilting bolt mechanism, and is overall less reliable.

    Don't bullshit.

  • i fail to see how a rifle that is lighter, has a greater muzzle velocity/range, brutally tough, has quite a few integrated features, and is more easily managed logistically can't be considered better. i also fail to see how a tilting bolt mechanism is a bad thing. all this not mentioning how ridiculously reliable both rifles are.

  • It doesn't have greater velocity or range, because they both fire the same cartridge.

It's no tougher or more reliable than the AK, but it IS semi-automatic and only holds 10 rounds. It is also less reliable than the AK from my own personal experiences.

  • Great video!!!!!! Easy tear-down and reassembly!!!! Nice Russian SKS

  • anybody help

my yugo 59/66 sks after the last round the bolt does not stay open any suggestuios on what might be the problem?

  • Your magazine's bolt catch might be worn down. Take it to a gun shop and have them look at it, there should be no fee and any parts you need you can order online and have shipped to your door, it is a fairly straightforward rifle.

  • how much is that? i got a mosin for about $85 great condition.

  • This rifle is worth upwards of 500 dollars since it is an original Tula rifle.

Mosins are great rifles, I have one of them too :)

  • whats up nathan my name is nathan to lol i have a chineas sks or how ever u spell it lol im getting a better stock for it soon

  • Usually after how many shots before you strip & clean your SKS?

  • After corrosive ammunition, immediately.

    With normal stuff, just whenever.

  • You didn't take off the action (trigger assembly) or the stock/barrel/reciver assembly. other than that, an excellent guide.

  • Been addressed previously. This was intended as more of a field strip, not a full strip.

  • should I get one of these rifles myself? Do you recommend it?

  • ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY!! Highly reliable, decently accurate, cheap, sturdy, long lasting... in other words, the freaking bomb. Like a hammer in a toolbox, everyone should have one of these rifles.

    So yes, GET ONE!

  • Ahh,nice nice,i got the same exact one,ill have to watch and do it at the same time im watching, lol thanks nice vid

  • when i put my bolt back in and spring in it catches the lock and i have to pull the bolt a few time for it to set. that same for you, or should i just let the spring hang?

  • I am not sure what you mean by this. Could you be a little more descriptive?

  • Excellent, thank you!

  • You're welcome!

  • thanks man!!!

  • You're welcome!

  • Hey nice job! A friend showed me how to take mine down but you showed me much farther and easier way of doing it. Thanks

  • Yay for good friends! AHAH! Glad I could help!

  • Great instructive video. I have a field manual on tearing down my SKS but it's sorely lacking in detail. Your video makes it easy. Thanks for helping us SKS owners to be able to field strip our weapons using an easy to watch video example.

  • Thank you, that means a lot to me :)

  • Thanks a lot for making this. A visual aid is very useful.

  • You're welcome!

  • I got the chinese Norinco

version of that gun, same teardown principle, once I lift up that lever to pull the gas chamber assembly off, I can get the lever up, and the chamber wont pull off as it should, is it just really stuck or was there something else I didnt catch, ive already got the receiver off?

  • how do u make it fully auto not that i would

  • You would have to mess with the trigger mechanism (Be careful if you ever have to disassemble it). Semi-autos usually have two sears, one that releases the hammer or striker, and one that disengages the trigger after the bolt comes back.

I wouldn't try it either. It is illegal and a waste of ammo.

  • Cool man, but you didn't take out the trigger group!

  • This is a basic field strip, not a full-on disassembly!

  • awsome nigger

  • can one like that take clips as well??

  • It can be modified to take MAGAZINES but they are generally unreliable. It is far better to use the stripper clips and thou shalt never haveth a problem.

  • True with one exception. Tapco20 magazines don't cause problems. It requires removing some of the wood inside the magazine well due to being designed for use with the Tapco Fusion Stock. However, by adding a few other US parts it can be 922R compliant with the Tapco20 in the factory stock. The Tapco magazines "DO NOT" cause jams at all like the other after markets ones do. Murray's Guns makes US triggers and sears for SKS to help in the US compliance parts count so a high cap mag be used.

  • nice rifle, i am having my yugo sks metal parts reblued, thats a nice finish on yours did you have it restored??

by the way nice tip using the cleaning rod for the reinstall of the spring .....nice video

  • No, the rifle is original. I am glad someone likes it :)

  • very nice sks and the yugos are just as good as the russians

  • Yes they are, though they are heavier due to the extra steel used due to the lack of having a chrome lined bore. As long as the rifle isn't abused with corrosive ammo (have to really look for corrosive ammo nowadays though) you will be fine.

  • i like the ak-47 more then the sks but sks is nice

  • Yes, the AK-47 is better than the SKS but the SKS has that appealing streamlined look to it, not to mention the fact that you dont have to worry about magazines and the pig sticker is already attached :)

  • wrong, sks is better and more accurate at long ranges because the barrel is alot longer. nice gun though..

  • In terms of accuracy I think they are pretty much on-par with eachother (comparing apples to apples) but I was speaking in terms of versatility... better placed safety (though noisy), pistol grip, detachable magazines, etc.

  • thats a nice looking gun is it russian because i think the russian one is the best looking the rest are shit

  • Yes, it is a Tula rifle, you are correct.

  • tula nice what year and for how much is one

  • LOL its in the first few lines spoken in the video! It is a 1951 rifle and for one in decent condition will run approximately 300 at least.

  • ok sorry i have my computer on mute most of the time :/

  • Whoops, sorry 'bout that.

  • One of the best combat rifls ever made

  • You didn't check that the firearm was unloaded. That is the first thing you always have to do.

  • Thank you for being the 1E6 person to have the same comment! Unfortunately, this has been hashed and rehashed and I have admitted it as a mistake before and made amends.

    Thanks for commenting!

  • Great video bud. There are many out there that buy these rifles and never get a manual with them. Youtube works great for folks such as that, and it only works great because people like yourself and many others take the time to video it.

  • Thank you! That means a lot to me.

  • I agree. Could you possibly make a field stripping video for your M44? That would be awesome.

  • I just might do that. I have a Hi-Power 9mm and a Makarov strip in the works as well.

  • Ooh, Makarov

    Subbed

  • not a bad video, camera work could be better but great vid either way

  • Meh, one has to use what they have. I had a sister not doing anything and a rifle. :)

  • that sks is in a++++++ shape, good video...

  • Yes, it is a very nice Russian rifle. One of my favorites actually.

  • You forgot the trigger group, and stock, brother...the trigger group can be removed by using the pick from the cleaning cylinder from the buttstock...if there isn't one, a flat tip screwdriver will suffice...ensure that the safety is on, or the trigger group will not come out...to remove, there is a dimple located at the rear of the trigger guard...push down firmly, with the available implement, and the trigger group will pop right out...

  • Thank you. That is good to know when you are attempting to remove all that nasty cosmoline from a new purchase.

  • As said before, if you want to get a FULL STRIP, then look at adak1974's video. If you want to do a FIELD STRIP, then look at mine.

In my defense, this is the first video to authoritatively outline the stripping of the SKS ever put on youtube, so the 1st generation can have its faults while maintaining its intent.

  • Thats a nice looking rifle, the bayo and the bolt look so clean and shinny =)

  • lol sorry if i was mean but i dont have a video camera! trying to though

  • dude wtf thats barely half of it the trig mech and the drop down of the lower half of the bolt are special components that you should have noted! REMAKE THE VIDEO AND DO A BETTER JOB!

  • Go watch the video adak1974 made if you want a full field strip. My video is the first video ever posted on YouTube that even showed how to disassemble the SKS, adak1974's is version 2.0 and about twice as popular as mine, as he, admittedly, does a better job with filming and explanation.

If you can do this video better, by all means, be my guest. This is America after all.

  • You can pretty much use nothing but a bullet to disassemble an SKS. The gas tube lever and rec. cover lever, if hard to turn, the bullet works well. Also, you can remove the trigger group with the bullet too by hitting the release button with the bullet, striking it with the palm of your hand.

  • True enough, although this is a basic field strip. adak1974 does a more thorough job.

  • Nice Video! Is there a way around dry firing an SKS? With my Mausers I can hold the trigger down and push the bolt forward. Just curious if there is a way with the SKS. Thanks!

  • There is not and it does not harm the rifle at all.

  • whats the differene between a chinese SKS and a yugo one?

  • There are a few minor differences in features but no differences in function. The Yugo 59/66 is the only SKS to have a NATO spec grenade launcher attached to it and has a gas valve near the front to allow the launching of such grenades. The Chinese variants, both military and commercial, are distinct and varied. Not only are they the lightest, some came as full auto, have spike bayonets and even some were made to take AK-47 magazines. The Chinese really made some cool stuff with the SKS.

  • yeah mine has the spike bayonet, its pretty cool! no detachable mag though.. I live in Canada so its rigged to only take 5 rounds at a time. Like all semi auto rifles up here, with the exception of .22's.

  • I thought I had it bad with only 10rds.... that sucks!

  • I have a yugo SKS and I have a question about the gas chamber. When I bought the rifle every single mechanism had a thick grease on it that slowed every mechanism down. I wiped out all of that and reoiled all moving parts. I asked a gunsmith about oiling up the gas chamber and moving parts in the gas chamber and he said I shouldn't do that. What do you think about it? Thanks man, I appreciate it.

  • Leaving excess oil in the gas tube and around the gas piston head probably isnt a good idea, but wiping it down with oil to remove the gunk and cosmo is not a bad idea. Periodically, the gas tube should be cleaned when using non-corrosive ammunition and should ALWAYS be cleaned immediatelu after shooting with corrosive ammo.

Excessive oil? No. Oil to clean up parts and prevent excessive wear? Absulutely!

  • Wow, I must have been a little bit wasted writing this. It is not "absulutely!" but "absolutely!"

  • The gunsmith gave you some sound advice...you want to ensure that the gas chamber is clean, but you DON'T want to get oil in the gas chamber as it will quickly build up cordite deposits that would eventually clog it and potentially present an unfavorable albeit a dangerous situation...

  • You didn't take apart the trigger assembly or magazine. So no it's not completely disassembled.

  • hey pullnshoot 25. you ever seen a chinese sks with a 40 rd mag. i got one.

  • No, I have not. I live in the PRK ( People's Republik of Kalifornia)

  • first things first! CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOUR FIREARM IS UNLOADED!

  • Already been addressed.

  • Thanks for the video. I've got a Norinco SKS-D, and it's a bit different, but the basic principles are the same.

  • is thier a possible way i can make my airsoft sks automatic? its boltaction shell ejection

  • I have no idea, I do not deal in airsoft. I am assuming that it would be very unlikely unless it was a battery powered model. This is an actual weapon I am holding, btw...

  • i've got an SKS-D and i'm haveing a hard time removeing the trigger assembly..

can anyone give me a tip?

  • visit adak1974 his video. he shows a little trick in that video. It might help you

  • i bought an sks that came with a 30 round mag already in it. what do i have to do to get it to accept the original 10 round mag?

  • Remove the trigger group, remove the 30 rounder, reinstall the 10 rounder and reinsert the trigger group.

  • what about the bannet i dont understand how to put it back in after u have it out

  • You pull up on the latch thingy near the top and then pull to the side. The bayonet will go back into place.

  • Hey thanks for the clip! Micah GT

  • Nothing like spending $300 for a standard soviet sks and then buying all the extra's. Clip mod,scope,bipod,100 rd drum ( rare ), laser, flashlight, Svd stock i could go on but its a great gun with some TLC

  • You're thinking of the AK. The SKS never had a 100rd drum.

  • honestly, I think an M-14 is easier to field strip.

  • maybe not easier because their is a lot of pinching and pushing (everything doesn't just open up on the 14 like it does on the sks) but I belive field stripping a m-14 is faster in that their are fewer main parts

  • Whats the procedure in the US to buy guns? do you have to have a licence?

  • You don't need a license to buy a gun but you must be 18(rifle) or 21(handgun) and not a felon. You need a FFL if you want to buy and sell them as a business and have them shipped directly to you, or you can get a C&R(Curio and Relics) to collect guns that are older than 50 years and be able to have those shipped to you. The SKS is C&R eligible. Otherwise head to a local gun shop and pick up one, although you can't be a felon and they will do a background check.

  • Most of the SKS varieties are C&R legal, but not all.

  • hey pullnshoot i have a 1000$ SKS rifle and it came with the standard rifle stock is there any way i could fit a standard AK-47 stock on there? please respond

  • You can buy a collector grade Soviet SKS for 600 dollars. Please post multiple picturea of this rifle so I can see what it is that you bought.

As to your question, it is not possible to fit an SKS into an AK stock. They are similar yet entirely different firearms.

  • I want an SKS. :3 I own a very good .22 bolt action rifle with a scope, and a Beretta M9 92FS. Nothing big yet.

  • nice video man, i like doing this to my M1 Garand though, all you do with it is detach the trigger guard and everything comes loose, thats basically it, and all you have to do to take out a stuck clip or cartridge.

  • You make it look simple can you still buy the 30 round clips for this rife???

  • Not clips, but magazines. Yes, you can still buy them but they do not work all that well with this rifle.

  • I think he really means clips but that thing would be huge.

  • You're wrong on the second step. The second step is actually to pull the bolt back to make sure the chamber is empty.

  • Yeah verily, an error on my part. It has been pointed out already though.

  • the Sks really isn't heavy.. But your's as amazing wood finish. very nice man.

  • Good rifle the SKS, it's rugged, accurate & well made. If I had an FAC I'd love to own one but unfortunately after hungerford semi-auto rifles above .22 calibre are illegal in the UK so I'd only get a straight pull but I bet it's still fun to use!

  • What is an FAC?

  • It's a firearms certificate. Same as your permit. What's the SKS like to fire? I work as a curator in the armoury at my local museum & we have an SKS but sadly all our weapons are deactivated.

  • That is unfortunate. If you ever come stateside to San Diego, CA shoot me a message and I will take you shooting.

It is a moderate recoiling rifle, quick to shoulder, a little on the heavy side, decent trigger and simply an awesome little carbine.

Like I said, when you come stateside, let me know!

  • I appreciate the offer, if I ever do go stateside I'll be sure to do that!

  • Right on.

  • what does the rod you removed at the end of the assembly, mine does not thread into anything but the bayonette holds it in place, but i dont know what it does or is mine normal

  • Hey, this is pullnshoot25 (this video's creator) on my friend's profile. My bayonet does hold the cleaning rod as yours does. Other rifles such as the Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R series of rifles are actually held in by threads.

  • Excelente video!! ypou make and excelente work!

  • Thank you!

  • You forgot the most important part of field stripping ANY weapon that is second nature for those who field strip and clean often but may be easily forgotten for someone first learning how to field strip their guns. ALWAYS check to see if there is a round in the chamber.......Safety First

  • Yeah verily, you are truly correct. Pardon my memory on that one.

  • My dad used to be in the yugoslavian army in the 1978 and he had these fresh from the factory lol, he loved it!!

  • Tell him to help us hook it up and we will love him just as much!

  • facinating :D

  • FTR: Tapco 20 round mags work perfect if anyone is interested in higher capacity.

Also, the majority of Cosmoline can be removed by using boiling water or a heat gun, since it breaks down at 135*F.

Anyway, nice vid ... you should have included trigger and magazine disassembly so you could pull the stock off for a thorough cleaning. Just my $0.02
