I learned this in geology class, we get volcanic ash events in alaska so it's not surprising to see all airports here suspend operations.

If the fan blades were not already warmed to their hot operating temp then sand hitting them would have no effect. Sand only turns to glass when it hits hot fan blades. Even then it is only when they cool that the damage is apparent. All this shows is that they are trying to reassure the public that their engine is impervious to sand, which it is not.

On turboshaft engines in Marine huey helicopters, we used to distribute crushed walnut shells into the engines to clean them.

Flying low over a beach will do it as well.

As you know, the turbine/jet engines are totally different in that everything basically just flows through them after contacting turbine blades and the internal contours of the engine.

@lookn4thepowpow The majority of the sand will be blown out in the bypass air. The temperature here is not high enough to melt the sand. The sand that goes into the core, however, does end up melting as combustion temperatures are very high. This glass tends to stick to the components in the turbine. This kind of damage is common in engines that run in sandy environments (Middle east, etc)
