PC Magazine reported that on the morning of September 17, 2010 "employees were told about Cuil's demise and the servers were taken offline five hours later." Laid-off employees were told they would not be paid. The shutdown reportedly came after an acquisition agreement fell through earlier in the week.

Cuil has indeed some more search results. Searching for 'test' without the brackets has 2,311,633,457 results while Google has only 713,000,000. What could have been a reason for Cuil's unawareness/unpopularity is having no image search. To think of it, the most popular websites online are often having light colour or white schemes (Google, YouTube, Wikipedia,etc)

Cuil is also now working on an encyclopaedia called Cpedia. Which is accessible but in alpha.

Cuil does have potential but among other search engines, Google is nearly impossible to surpass as the most used of its kind. It's been nearly two years but Cuil has barely managed to capture a fraction of usages compared with Google.

They made some minor edits in the site. The page bar thing is moved to the right instead and Preferences and a language selector (E.g. using the English version would have English with an arrow pointing down.

The layout is pretty cool, but the sites I'm pulling up aren't all relevant to my search terms -- some are even junk compared to what Google gives me for the same term(s). Cuil also keeps offering up images to go with sites in the search results, and the images have nothing to do with either the topic or the sites. ? Strange.

Looks like there are lots of bugs to still work out. Nice to see another alternative to Google though.

Millions of 1st time cuil users have been disappointed by the crappy search results of the Cuil search engine. The layout is great and the marketing team did a fantastic job but its core function SUCKS!!

At the time being, it sucks pretty hard. Most of the searches I tried (and, of course, I did not try the most common ones because they are not anything other search engines cannot handle) returned zero results. Cuil (funny spelling for such a pronunciation; Irish-like something?) has yet to learn to be as smart as the other engines out there. Shipping day should have been moved to some day months from now.

Imagine the guts it takes to start from scratch, and claim to have the ability to compose searches over several hundred billion web pages, and claim to be able to do it better than the number one most successful search engine in history.. Right now, Cuil is linking searches to the wrong weblinks..

I understand that it will take time to run perfect like Google. My question is, why didn't they launch it quietly, and solve the problems first before making a big deal about it? Like the way Youtube did? Obviously the search engine business is very hard to conquer. This is why Microsoft and Yahoo are having problems with it. But with CUIL, if you type Area 51, you get plenty of description of whats on web page before you click to see that page. SO much BS sites, and I've had 20,000 Google hits on a subject only to get to page 22 of search and that was the end. Some 22,000 hits.
