I love your sackboy, he looks great! I am making one using the Alan Dart pattern. I am starting the legs and I have a question which I'm hoping you can answer. The pattern reads: cast on 8 sts with Click for base edge and cont in st st.
1st inc row Inc into every st to end.
After I've casted on the 8 sts, do I start the next row immediately - the increase row or am I supposed to do one row of stocking stitch? I don't understand is his instructions to continue in st st. Thank you!
@Thecrowdisfamily Hi. Yes, the 1st increase row is the first row of the stocking stitch so you follow those instructions, then your next row is a purl. The second increase row is a knit, and then you follow the rest of the instructions keeping to 1 row knit, 1 row purl. You notice all the increasing and decreasing is done on knit rows. I think it is listed like that as it makes a difference when you make up the leg to get the correct shaping. Hope that helps.
@louisegood Thanks so much for getting back to me, I really appreciate it. I finished knitting all the pieces, now I just have to put it together. My 5 year old is very excited to be getting a sackboy!
any tips on how to flatten out the top of his head- is it just a matter of shaping as you stuff? I wonder if you might use a few hidden stitches to help hold it down?
When you sew the decorative lines on the top of the head if you pinch the knitting together when you make the stitch through this almost naturally flattens the head. Then when you have finished stitching all the way round pinch the stitched edged together to flatten further.
Hi Louise, I'd love a step-by-step video on how to knit a sackboy - I have the pattern, I just don't understand it!
Also, you say you knitted this one in double knit - is that just the type of wool? I like the size of your sackboy, so am thinking I might make a smaller one too - I take it the pattern is the same for a double knit sackboy?
I am putting some bits of video together to cover some of the difficult bits of making the sackboy. You can find step-by-step how to knit videos around YouTube to help you make him. Double Knit is the UK name for the type of yarn used. In USA it would be 8ply. The pattern says Chunky which is double the thickness of Double Knit (8ply) so I used the same pattern just using the thinner yarn so he came out smaller, but perfectly proportioned. I also used smaller needles - I think 3mm (US3)
can you send me one plzz! my little brother wants one but i cant knitt or find them on stores if you can id be grateful that you did ad if you will i will show u a copy of his character thank you
Thank you so much! I put the Alan Dart instructions down and worked off of yours. They made way more sense and you helped so much. The hand looks correct now and once you explained it it became so much less stressful. I may make a couple cracks at it though just to improve on my first attempt. Thanks again for taking time to help!
You are correct in your original thinking that the thumb is half and half. If you look at the instructions for the thumb, you have 12 sts thencast on 3 stitches at the beginning of two rows (adding 6 to your 12 to make 18) and then cast them off again in the following 2 rows (back to 12), so in effect you get a little lump at each end of your knitting. You then do the fingers as set out above so when you have finished the two thumb pieces go together. You then sew these tog with the
While I'm at it, when you are knitting the thumb it should all be on one side right? At one point I though maybe the thumb ended up half on either side and would be sewed together with the arm. I'm now convinced I was wrong and now have the thumb all on one side. My thumb is now 3 cast on stitches at the beginning of 1 K row, I then knitted into the 3 cast on stiches and the rest of the row (18sts?), then purled back into the 12 sts and 3 thumb sts = Then cast off on the next K row. Purl back.
By the way yours looks awesome. It is a fun project. I've learned a lot about knitting via this project. I figured it all out and was so proud of myself until the hands. I don't understand how you can do all the short rows, turns, threading stitches on needle, draw up, and then continue on. I am doing something wrong.
You then use the yarn that is left of your 100cm to make the ring finger. As you have just oversewn your seam your yarn will be at the bottom edge of your knitted finger, close to your knitting needle so your simply K the next 2 stitches and then turn your knitting and P3 back, then turn the work again and K3. Repeat the cutting off 100cm, threading through and oversewing, leaving your yarn back at your knitting needle to do the next finger, etc. Each finger uses 3 or 4 stitches only.
Could you give me some detailed help on the hands? I'm past the thumb cast off and am at the WORK FINGERS: LITTLE FINGER section. I don't understand the K7, turn and work on these sts only. Do I K7, switch needles hands, and purl back.. knit back... yarn over, or what? If I continue on how I'm doing it I make a mess and the P3, turn isn't where the little finger should be, it is where the index should be? What am I doing wrong. I've never knit before this so details and explanations help.
Your first suggestion was correct. You work on a few stitches at a time to get the fingers, so K7 then turn your work and purl back 3. You are only working on 3 stitches now. The next row is K so K those 3 stiches.
You are not going to cast off the stiches, instead you cut the yarn so that you have a long thread left, it says 100cm. You then thread this into a needle and oversew the edges of your knitting. This creates the finger.
Click refers to the yarn that Alan Dart uses on his original pattern. Sirdar Click Chunky. You don't have to use this yarn, just something that knits up to the same tension if you want the same size toy. I used Double Knit (8 ply) for this one so it came out half size.
I already went ahead and started making it w/o regard to his reference to "click". I'm making a lot of modifications along the way and still experimenting w/ all the body parts. It's been fun!
I gave the pattern to a friend and hope they can alter it a bit as I don't think the head it done right and the white big stiches on it should be more irregular and I will post a video respons on here when it is done :) thx for the video and hope you like my version of it when I get it
Thanks. I did sell my first one on ebay, but there didn't seem to be much interest in it. In fact the person who bought it didn't even put any feedback on, so I have no idea if they liked it.

On the pattern instruction it reads, "Cast on 12 sts with Click for base edge and.."
Could you tell me what "with Click" or "click" means? I don't know how to decipher that sentence. Does he mean a cable hook? I'm so confused lol!
Thanks!
