I've just been reading fashion: The Century of the designer 1900-1999 by Charlotte seeling (brilliant book I’d recommend it to anyone studying 20th century fashion). and I don't recall her describing the 1950's as 'comfortably'. It was the opposite, the women were encourage to be perfectly groomed and usually changed outfits several times a day! I've watched a few youtube videos like this (giving false information) so I'm sticking to books from now on, much more reliable.

My mother was 16 in 1958, she wore crinolin slips that took up two drawers just for slips, garter belts and stockings, panthose came in the 1960's, gloves were worn ALWAYS, doing your hair, you washed it one night and slept in curlers & cold cream, Dior came out with the NEW LOOK, the 50's were not simple in style, watch a Place in the Sun, or siting pretty women wore skirts and half boots in the snow, schools did NOT allow slacks for girls ANYWHERE, Now we live in California, New York was worse
What ? the 1950's was the "new look" by Dior, fitted waist, and full skirt, Polyester was not invented, rayon was big, Women ALWAYS wore hat and gloves FOR DAY WEAR, the 50's were post war, luxuery was in the everyday hence vacuuming in pearls and heels. Poodle skirts wear worn with sweater sets, and shirt maker style tops and dresses, Watch I Love Lucy, and you will see, we had bright color then, too.
@ldyreal i agree, sorry but nothing shes said makes sense, I've been into the 1950s for a long time, this is the time they even reinvented/reused the corset to give themselves an hourglass shape...not a comfortable time.
@PositivelyPinup In the 1950's their was some casual wear. Depended on your income. Halter necks, 3/4 pants, cardigans, leggings, tea dresses etc. That was casual, not all women in the 1950's wore gloves, hats, pencil skirts etc. My nan grew up in the 50's and always wore flowing dresses, she didn't wear stockings, suspender belts/girdles etc. A lot of what she said actually made sense. Just depended where you were from and your family income. My nan completely agreed with this woman.
