Wow. Did she ever sing the hell out of that song! Great set of pipes (very underrated), great talent and a great beauty (also underrated). I never heard this rendition before. It's phenomenal, and she looked fabulous performing it.
I was about 12 when this first aired, and this song stopped me in my tracks THEN. It's just a great American song, done with a great delivery by Ms. Burnett.
Yes, 'eat2volve''s father, Robert Allen, wrote this (with his collaborator, lyicist Al Stillman) for the special- recorded on March 5, 1962, and broadcast on June 11th, just as Carol ended three seasons as a supporting cast member on "THE GARRY MOORE SHOW". Irwin Kostal is conducting the orchestra...
I periodically read that Carol felt insecure doing 'straight' songs solo but either depended on her comedic talent or a a partner. She had nothing to feel worried about. She could sing anything. One of the old school belters with a fine voice and delivery.
My father, composer Robert Allen, wrote the music to this song. He wrote a lot of songs; this was his favorite. And boy, that Carol Burnett sure can sing! Love it.
Thank you so much for putting this here on Youtube, after I finally got to see the special I was completely floored by this performance and it was the one I came home raving about! Thanks so much!
I'm iam in hog heaven with these clips from J & C at Carnegie Hall! Saw the original broadcast when I was a kid and immediately bought the LP - which I still have. Know every number by heart to this day. Such a treasure to find on Youtube as there is no DVD or even VHS of it to my knowledge. Thank you all for sharing!
@tridavi look on ioffer.com. they have a lot of dvd's that come from illgotten sources, but i ain't complain'. i'm only 20 and i love all this stuff. so i get it when i can, 'cause my daddy was a year old and my mom wasn't even born when this was aired. (aka- i wasn't even thought of) but it's still awsome.
@MJTro12 I didn't. In youtube's childhood, I downloaded this sequence from another user and decided to put it up again if it ever disappeared. It's just great!

C's comedic charm can't be developed or "faked"--it's just a gift.

I've missed it too so I got the whole show just to make this clip available here :-). I will try to make one without the pixilated beginning.
