very good wording in the description. "emotionally invested in his smashing" and very true. it's more like relief on both parts, rather than a way to motivate himself
I read in "Roger Federer - The Greatest" it was a different match that made Roger change his attitude, I think it was against a german player and he smashed his racquet after he lost and then started crying. But it wasn't against Marat.
it was during this period that he stopped smashing his racket and consequently reached the quarters in roland garros and wimbledon because of it, but it wasn't against safin, it was against franco squillari, argentinian player in hamburg 2001, he explains in an interview after winning wimbledon for the sixth time you can find it on youtube...I know what ur thinking and the answer is yes: i'm a federer addict
@ganzelever You're right that Squillari was the last straw, but Fed did mention on Letterman that the Safin match also got him thinking. They were two consecutive tournaments anyway, so sth was clearly going on in his head those couple weeks :)
i remember fed saying in an interview that it was after this match i think (or one of those against safin) when he saw the highlights and it was all racket smashing from both players that he decided to truly shape up...
@demondayzzz no way!? that's pretty cool. He was probably embarrassed by the one where he threw his racquet in the air and then flinched when it bounced; kind of like a hard-ass that chickens out at the last second.
@demondayzzz Yep, he mentioned that fact on Letterman in 2005 as well, after he won his 2nd straight USO beating Agassi, look it up, great interview, you can really see his sense of humor
@demondayzzz I believe I have just watched this interview! It was on David Letterman after he won the US Open 2005. He talked about smashing racquets with Safin and from that on he decided to change his behaviour because he said he was there on court to put on a good show, but a show of tennis, not racquet smashing!
@demondayzzz although, he did slam his raquet in 2005 agains´t rafa in miami and 2009 agains´t djokovic in miami and 2006 agains´t nalbandian in rome..the fury came out of the cage again, a few times..
@demondayzzz in federer´s book, he said that decided to change his attitude, when he played the hamburg tournament and he was playing franco scollari and he smashed the shit out of raquet, during the match.
@RFmeastro safin is better?hah no way.Roger is a better person and player, and i like that Fed was strong enough to control his anger,he made himself calmer.that is impressive, safin never had that kind of strength
ok.i have always thought that Fed has always been a cool headed guy

Lol, they look like two pissy teenagers.

Too funny. Fed referred to this match and video when he was on Letterman after winning the USO and his 6th GS

Over the years Federer has evolved into being the classiest and most loved tennis player of all times!
rauhanomaisenSoturi 3 months ago 2
Yeah Federer didn't throw racquets after that he felt the media's focus was on the racquet smashings rather than the good tennis they both played
Bobby61189 3 months ago
Lol would never see Federer do that anymore. I didn't think he could, other then the time in Miami.

True that

yes this was the match in which federer really knew afterwards that he has to cool down

funny to see them both get frustrated and angry at the same time:)
