  • So Steve!!!

  • People, people, people... turn it up. Shut up... Enjoy. Chill.

  • Thumbs up if you remember these two in The Blues Brothers.

  • Do ya ever snap the neck off guitars like a small twig?

  • Hey...I'm constantly amazed at the amount of young people exploring the "older" acts, and digging them too! I think that for those of us who are moved by music, almost any genre has its own appeal, and our tastes are as eclectic as whatever we happen to be listening to at the moment. With very few exceptions, all music is good music. Why argue about it?

  • yeah, they got some BLUES!

  • Is this in a different key or something? Or does he just play the chord stabs at the beginning different?

  • I just now noticed they were both in the Blues Brothers movie.. Damn,

  • awesome is an overused word...but I simply can't think of another....

  • totally brilliant!!!!!!!

  • Sorry, but it would not be cool to leave out Steve's Band that backed this whole thing up SUPERBLY. The AMAZING Steve Jordan sharing drum duties with Steve Ferrone, David Hood, Spooner Oldham, and Neal Sugarman and Jon Tiven playing Tenor Sax. Long as you enjoy Great Rock N' Roll get the new Johnny Winter also: Roots. Also filled with 5 Star guests: Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth, Susan Tedeschi, Vince Gill, John Popper and brother Edgar. Got both 9/30/11 on vinyl. New releases.

  • I ran out of room. The BRAND NEW record that Steve recorded of his influences, The 5 Royales and their guitar player Lowman Pauling is called Dedicated. Got it on Amazon and the list of guest players is AMAZING: Stevie Winwood, Bettye La Vette, Willie Jones, B.B. King, Shemekia Copeland, Lucinda Williams, Keb Mo, Dylan LeBlanc, Sharon Jones, Brian May, Angel Cropper, Neal Sugarman, Dan Penn, Buddy Miller, Beth Hooker, Harry Stinson, and John Tiven who also produced it with Steve. MAGNIFICENT!!!

  • Hey ChickenboneJohn,

This was the VERY 1ST Rock N' Roll song I ever heard, and it was when I was a teen watching American Graffiti. I'm 50 and have circled around R'N'R ever since, and DO play guitar also. I knew when I heard this cat, what it was SUPPOSED to sound like! Ain't never been nobody like Cropper, and never will be, but's it's all good. Just got a brand new "vinyl record" (with a FREE CD included) of Steve's 1st influence The 5 Royales and their guitarist, Lowman Pauling. Enjoy!

  • Outstanding

  • Learning this on bass - its so simple but so goooooood!

  • Nobody can do this like the original guitar man!

  • I'd have to go and refresh my memory with the books on my shelf, but as I recall, a very young Jimi Hendrix (pre-fame/ young and very hungry) called on Steve Cropper when he was in the area, and Steve was very cool and generous to him, and they traded licks and ideas all night. It's cool when class (and a natural un-threatened recognition of genius) goes hand in hand with talent. Anyway...check my channel for some good raw blues if you can....

  • KILLER!! None better. Total class and classic.

  • These two also played for the Blues Brothers.

  • Thank's Snortfrest, Steve Cropper would have to be one of my favorite Tele pickers.

  • I asked Steve about the b bender. He doesn't have one - all those great bends that we're hearing are coming from the strength of his hands. If you listen to the original studio version of Hip Hug Her he does some great two string bends at the end of the song. They're way up on the neck, and they're not easy to play unless you've got strong hands!

  • Steve Cropper makes good use of the 'b' bender on the ad lib guitar solo bit right at the end. Great stuff!

  • @bassman4503 I don't think Cropper has a b bender. He's a big guy with really strong hands. At the very end it looks like he's bending two strings at once while doing a little up and down thing with his right hand. I may be wrong, he may have one, but I don't think so. I'll ask him and post his answer.

  • Saw them in Perth, Scotland last weekend, awesome!

  • @fickwalker Most people don't have a clue what they're talking about anyways! I find it ridiculous that people can't just enjoy the music without having to criticize and talk out of their ass. Thanks for posting this...If people had any Idea how many artists and hit songs these two guys have been involved in it would blow their mind!

  • That Rascal can play.

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, looking at Donald "Duck" Dunn's discography is simply like looking at an encyclopedia of Rock and Roll. He and Steve just invented the thing. It's theirs' do do with as they please. Just watch and listen.

  • AWSOME!!!!

  • Wish I had got off my arse and been at this concert, brilliant stuff, thanks for the post.

  • This video rocks and you do too! Thanks for posting. Peace.

  • GodDamn! These guys can STILL turn goat-piss into gasoline. TIGHT. Tight as a railroad track nailed to the floor. MAN I love these guys. Cropper is still a brilliant guitarist, and Duck is probably one of the most solid bassists out there. If you take this video off, what the hell are the kids listening to the current crap going to use as a guide as to what REAL music is?

  • Great video. Love both of these artists.

  • This is the tune that inspired so many of those organ based rock bands of the sixties, The Seeds, The Doors etc. That's Booker T Jones on keys. Booker T and the MGs, house band for Stax Records.

  • Sweet, real sweet. Thanks for posting this!

  • two hippy santas

  • Yeah, Yeah ... Yeah it's a great rock band

Although only the bassist and guitarist of the original band

thanks for uploading your video brother

    greetings from peru

  • @fickwalker nahhh .. they're not worth it ! come on !

  • whats the name of this song?? watch?v=HCk6AhGz6AA

  • let em bitch..not reads it anyways...the video as back as all fuck tho...

  • @fickwalker Or anybody, really. Some music is timeless, this is some such music. Classic. This vid proves that to possess great musical talent does not neccessarily equate to having a great taste in shirts. Love it. Forever.

  • The best version on youtube, this should be on the top of search. Thank you for sharing!

  • so is many many bands that have copied off me that need to admit it

  • so is incubus

  • right winged corperate pieces of crap

  • so is jack white

  • @Retina100000 Jack white can't be right wing. His hero is Son House

  • not to disrespect john mayer but he's right handed piece of shit, so is dave grohl

  • Doesn't get any better than this for blues fans! Simple, memorable beat and riffs that grab ya' and don't let go 'til the song is over. THIS is music! Great post!

  • Instrumental genuises!

  • One of the best songs ever recorded . Duck Dunn , if you check his discography , is one of the most prolific musicians ever . Steve Croppers guitar is a Beaut . Great post , Thanks so much , and Thanks Booker T .

  • fickwalker don't worry about what people say in here. you uploaded an amazing song, who cares who originated it. thanks for adding this song.

  • @fickwalker What pointless arguing are you talking about? I went through a few pages and saw nothing but praise.

  • @anghmho The comments have been dealt with and deleted. Thanks for you concern.

  • far out!

  • hmm a red knob fender amp...some of the least desireable fender amps ive heard

  • SKATE!!!!!!

  • When we wake up to the truth of life, inspired music like this will emerge and flourish again, and all the uninspired crap that people call "music" these days will fade away and be forgotten. Search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says to learn the truth of life.

  • Classic, and gladly, not forgotten.

Real musicians, playing real instruments, adn paying real music, without the benefit of being overlayed by electronic cover ups, that hide any imperfections!

Just guys, playing the art, and doing at their best levels!

  • This is fantastic! Thank you for the upload!

  • good lord, I didn't even know this was done by someone in audience lol, great show and awesome camera work then

  • Holy crap, it's the bassist & guitarist from "The Blues Brothers"

  • Cropper's hands are ginormous just like his influence, Look how big his hands are ese.

  • Ahhh, man. This is so great. these guys have to have played this so many times they could fret it in their sleep, yet they still look like they're enjoying the hell out of themselves.

    Love it. Thanks for posting.

  • wow

  • Jam on, bro's! Very kewl! Grew up in the 60's near NYC...Cousin Brucie played all the Booker T & MG's tunes...the BEST!

  • 老獪になったスティーヴ・クロッパーの味~GREEN ONION~ダック・ダンもいる!~スタックス万歳!

    #jazzm

  • thanks to fickwalker for uploading this. Please don't remove it!

  • i didn't know steven segal played guitar...

  • @hobbsmusic perhaps ironically, Steven Segal is a blue guitarist as well.

  • If you have any doubt how important Steve Cropper is as a guitarist, pay attention how much noise you hear when he does his solo. Everyone just shuts up and watches

  • i play this in my jazz band...i use the same bass guitar :). i also relized the weather channel uses this song for the background music. my day has now been made.

  • very top guitaring

  • There is so much to be appreciated watching talent like this!

    BRAVO.

  • Steve & Duck were in my high school graduating class in 1959 in Memphis. They made a gazillion dollars off this song & I would love to get just what they do off BMI for this song. Steve also wrote Midnight Hour & Dock of the Bay & several others. Nuff said!

  • @coltgrabber2: Messick High School! Did you know the other guys from the original Mar-Keys like Don Nix and Packy Axton? How about Charlie Freeman?

I once read Duck and Steve saw Elvis perform at lunchtime in their high school cafeteria in 1955. Did you happen to see that?

  • That's what I call half-a-century of playing together! Solid!

  • Classic!

  • Mean song, but can't but help they are holding back?? Idk, seems like the grooves there, but as far as soloing goes... I coulda done that when I was 17

  • @tomomoto

Once you've been playing guitar for 20 or 30 years with some decent musicians you'll understand the idea of restraint (holding back as you put it), ahh, the callowness of youth

  • @ChickenboneJohn yeah. this is Steve Cropper. it's not about the notes, it's about the groove and the feeling. if you like guitar acrobatics and acoustic masturbation, you'll want Yngwie Malmsteen or somebody.

  • @tomomoto: I'm guessing you weren't "the cool guy" in school. You ever notice how the cool guy is the one who rarely says anything?

Same applies when playing guitar: the less you say, the more profound it is when you do say it.

  • @PooPoo2U I would find it hard to play that song like that every night.. It wouldn't mean anything if you hold back. The more you understand harmony and chord changes the more you can express it and play with it. I have a Bachelor of music in Jazz and I have loved the blues brothers since I was a young kid. Even their live solos on the cd back then were far stronger, although it could have been Matt Guitar Murphy.

  • @tomomoto: The thing about young guitarists is that they all feel like they have to blow peoples' minds to establish themselves. While that's mildly true, this is Donald Dunn and Steve Cropper.

You know who they are, I know who they are, they don't have to prove anything to us. Then add the fact that they're probably getting arthritic in their old age, so they probably don't want to put too much stress on their hands by playing all over the neck every night.

  • @PooPoo2U I guess I am kind of young early 20's.. restraint is fine but it sounds like "the wiggles" are playing. The same rhythmic idea played for most of his solo, then misc blues scale runs. I doubt I could ask anyone on the street if they knew who they are and have a response more than 1/30 times.

Playing over the bar, using rhythmic ideas tastefully, rhythmic displacement, playing out of the changes and resolving, fast runs, licks and so on add to a soloists feel and sound.

  • @tomomoto: Yea, but the same could be said of a lot of famous musicians. Ask anyone under 30 who Frank Zappa is and they don't know. Or Willie Dixon or Chuck Berry or Son House or Robert Johnson: most younger people simply don't know.

So yes, alot of people don't know who they are but still they're in the Hall of Fame. You don't have to have everyone's attention at the same time to be successful or talented.

  • @PooPoo2U What you say is seriously not true, a lot of youngsters know about these guys. Ofcourse you shouldn't ask your 16 year old highschool boy or girl, but then again; what do they know about anything?

  • @PooPoo2U I am 16 and I know Frank Zappa and Chuck Berry.

  • @blackshadowbass: Congratulations son, sign yourself up for a Grammy.

  • @PooPoo2U Actually, I am a part of a Grammy-winning band, my school's concert band was awarded a Grammy last year!

  • @blackshadowbass: Of course you have. The name of your band?

  • @PooPoo2U I'm being serious. Look up "Newark High School Grammy"

  • @blackshadowbass: I don't see anything about winning a Grammy. I see "The school was also named a GRAMMY Signature School in 2010 by the GRAMMY Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.", which isn't the same as winning a Grammy.

  • @PooPoo2U I suppose, but we still recorded several pieces of music and sent them in and won a competition where we were selected by the Grammy Foundation. That counts for something

  • @blackshadowbass: I don't think you actually won, might want to check again. About 15 schools receive those awards yearly and they have a ranking system (National winner, Gold, Enterprise, etc.)

Your school didn't even win National or Gold rankings, so your award is tantamount to an honorable mention.

  • @PooPoo2U However we were still not on the bottom, we got the Enterprise level. Either way, the point of this conversation is that not all people my age are ignorant to good music. I know several musicians my age that still appreciate music that isn't the generic pop/rap/hip-hop-nonsense fed down the throats of mainstream audiences. But obviously, we are in the minority.

  • @PooPoo2U I think the comment should be revised to say " most people under 30" not "anyone" because I know who chuck berry is and I am 19.

  • @PooPoo2U You couldn't be more wrong. I'm 23 and only dig the old stuff like Bo Diddly, Don Mclean, Frijid Pink, The Ventures, Tommy James and the Shondells, and etc... I know more about the music from the 40's-70's than my parents do.

  • @SkinnyNinja420: Oh, so you're implying that you're the rule and not the exception?

  • @PooPoo2U No, just stating that not every person under the age of 30 is completely clueless about the great oldies. But after reading a few pages of comments, I'm sure I'm no exception. There's a good amount of us young folk who jive to this amazing music.

  • @SkinnyNinja420: You cannot be both rule and exception. If you say that you're not an exception you imply that a large percentage of today's youth are acquainted with the acts I mentioned, in which case I can guarantee you're wrong.

  • @PooPoo2U Whatever man. You want to be an old ornery asshole, that's fine. Go on and keep believing that only old people like yourself enjoy good music.

  • @SkinnyNinja420: And where in my comments do I make the claim that only old people like me enjoy good music?

I challenge you to find it anywhere in my comments, firstly because I never said it, and secondly because I'm only 24, which hardly qualifies me as old.

  • @tomomoto What a joke. The Wiggles (ex Cockroaches, a highly mediocre OZ band) would kill to be able to play like that. Age will teach you one day about the two ingredients you overlooked......

Tone and Groove. That song was dang full of it.

    Listen with spirit not mind.

  • steve is so frikkin handsome

  • @fickwalker awesome video, thanks man

  • Keep putting up videos for those of us that are serious in learning and sharing. Ignore the imature attitudes. Thanx.

  • Good looking video & sound. What kind of camera were you using?

  • Good stuff...

  • GREAT GREAT THANKS!

  • @fickwalker Ja Wohl! This ain't Delaney, Bonnie, and Friends (no disrespect intended) but this IS the real deal!!

  • i like this version better that guitar sounds too good

  • Thanks for posting this great old classic. The sheet music for Booker T.'s original organ part for "Green Onions" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription of the main riff.

  • Wasn't the duck one the blues brothers band members?

  • @sweigart2

yes and so were all, or at least most of the MG's members. I think Booker T wasn't in the movie

  • @SHBlacky Booker T is right there on the keyboards.

  • Love this song. Loved the version Cropper and Dunn did with the Blues Brothers on the album Made in America

  • real musicians, playing real music, nuff said

  • This was called the Memphis Sound as presented on the STAX albums.

The men behind this music was first and foremost Otis Redding (before he died in a plane crash in 1967) and Steve Cropper.

When you listen to the song Soul Man you hear either Sam or Dave call out "Play it Steve"...that's Steve Cropper. Both Dunn and Cropper appeared in the movie Blues Brothers and recreated the sound that they put down on tape back in 1966-69.

  • Just saw an interview with Mark Farner, with high praise for Steve Cropper. I had never heard of Steve before, so I looked him up and here I am. I didn't realize he was the guitarist for Booker T and the MG's.....this song Green Onions was a favorite of mine from way back, i had bought it when I was a pre-teen. Being a keyboardist, I was consumed by the Hammond, and never really paid attention to Steve's guitar. WOW..he's great. Can definitely hear his influence on Farner's guitar work.

  • i didnt know anything about cropper i knew his grandma bessie and his dad and most of his family still lives here but ive nevr been into blues either

  • Viva El Colonelo y El Pato!

  • What is really cool is that they kept the integrity of the sound of the original recording. Live performances sometimes don't recreate the same mojo that was hidden in the vinyl, but they hit the mark.

  • This dudes awesome !!!

  • I am an also an old man did all your stuff my last thing was working with tiny tim

  • always nice to see people on stage actually enjoying the music they are playing.

  • @fickwalker please dont take down the video cos of some idiots, that way they would have won.

  • WOW... This is real music. The way it should be done. None of the synth voice emo pop tarts could even conceive of being this awesome.

  • AND THAT, Kiddies,..Is how its done!

  • FAR OUT! THIS IS GREAT! Steve Cropper, did you used to live on Second Avenue in San Francisco? I was your neighbor a long time ago, if so! We knew the Cropper family! Love your playing and love Green Onions!! A Big Fan, Nan

  • @fickwalker This is a really good video for what it is, and cranked up on my big speakers! sounds great!!!!!!!

  • @fickwalker MY BAD!! and I appologize...........I was watching the "Harry James" version of the Green Onions tune...........which looks like it's straight out of the 40's!! and I just made the assumption.

Steve Cropper rocks! much repect to him, his career, and all the members of Booker T and the MG's

  • Just came across this video today. Loved it! The video quality is very good. May I ask what camcorder you used? Hi def? Even the sound is great for a hand-held. Thanks for a reply. Cliff, Freehold, NJ

  • nice cover..........I am really enjoying this!!

  • Anything that came out of Stax you could dance to. Wish I still had the legs.

  • Whoops - my mistake. The tune was co written by Steinberg, Jones, Al Jackson and the very guy who's playing that Fender Strat - Steve Cropper. Duck Dunn replaced Steinberg as base guitar after he had differences with Jones. However my comment still applies.

  • jcarlosco - What are you ranting about? The song was co-written by Donald "Duck" Dunn, Lewie Steinberg, Al Jackson AND Booker T Jones. So there is no such thing as just "Booker T's version". These guys were to heart, the rock, the source, the DNA of Stax Records and long may they "make da music".

  • gosh, booker's version is much better

  • Steve and Donald are legends up their with anyone in the history of music

  • who's on the organ?

  • @only4tsc booker t

  • @covGuk oh, Booker T. & The M.G.'s isn't in the title.

  • Jus seen them at BB Kings in PB... They were great!!!

  • The friggin best good ole fashion guitar playing! Go Stax!
