I have always wondered how Kansas would have handled the video creativity thing if MTV had burst forth in their prime, say 1976 ,rather than 1982. Walsh was gone by the time of this recording. It is a catchy song and a well done video but for me it is not Kansas without Walsh
So too was violinist Robby Steinhardt. Steinhardt's last appearance as a member of the Kansas we knew and loved was on the 1982 LP "Vinyl Confessions," in which the noted hit there was "Play the Game Tonight." Steinhardt left Kansas for the last time in 2006, succeeded by David Ragsdale, who previously replaced Steinhardt in the mid 1990s.

@salinagrrrl69 I'm assuming your question is a seroius one: several memebers of the original Kansas line up became serious Christians in the 1970's. Kerry Livgren (founding member) went on to put together AD - an outstanding "Christian" band of the 1980's. John Elefante and his bro Dino, who played a major role in the Drastic Measures album, were both devout Christians and went on to successful careers in the Christian music industry. Read Livgren's book: Seeds of Change for background.
@sjplwc Main stream chart songs having a sound that seemed to pull from contemporary of the time Christian Rock style and sound - we included in that conversation Extreme with 'Hole Hearted'. Like Dakota Motor Co.? 2nd Chapter of Acts? Rez Band? For Him? well.......
Theres nothing to loose, cause it's already lost. Theres been many songs called Fight Fire with Fire (yes I know they're not all the same) and Metallica's is good no doubt, the Kansas really does fight fire with fire.
Elefante was the name of John and his brothers band, that played at Long Beach,Ca's Millikan H.S. graduation week in 1980. They were good but Johns vocals didn't leave much of a impression. He obviously got it down, lead singer for Kansas. Nothings ever as good as the original though .Styx,Journey, many a great time at there shows. I will never see them ever. Dennis DeYoung and Perry are the group, though Journeys guy is much more talented than that yo-yo for Styx!
And back then, before the internet and 24/7 music news, people who didn't follow the band VERY closely had no idea about the change - elafante sounded enough like walsh that most people were clueless that walsh had left
This song came out in 1983 I should know it was my favorite year. I remember this song and the video on MTV and also Kansas battled it out with ZZ TOP on a T.V. show called "Friday Night Video's" It was a show where people voted the better video and song every week. At the end of it all Def Leppard "Foolin" beat ZZ TOP "Gimmie all your loving" I remember it as it was yesterday!
This came out in 1983? There abouts? Hearing it in passing back then & not being up on the band Kansas I thought to myself "Gee that sure sounds like contemporary Christian rock." I just looked it up on Wiki. Mah Gaud They WERE heavily into the Christian rock scene then. I find that out now - 26 years later....HUH....
OBTW it is said there is another group that had a big hit that is said to have the Christian rock influence. Go hear > Extreme - Hole Hearted - Good tune! Worth a listen.
At age 50, it's probably safe to say that I've been listening to rock and metal since before you were born. My sons are both musicians and I listen to all types of music. Metallica had some decent tunes 20 years ago but has been dreadfully bad since then in my close minded opinion..
I lover Metallica but Kansas members were musical geniuses, talented masters, very accomplished musicians and highly skilled with their instruments. Lars, for example was never a great drummer and was just learning how to play when Metallica formed while Phil Ehart was an amazing progressive drummer. We're also talking about two entirely different genres of music here: apples and oranges.
"the metallica version is better than this....but this is alright..." LMFAO! FUCK metallica! Metallica will NEVER have the class Kansas has! I can make the same EXACT sounds metallica can by running thru a big restaurant kitchen and smahing all the pots and pans hanging off the hooks! All metallica did to this song was show us what it sounds like as it's being WATERBOARDED!
i always wondered what the dude said, too. I think it was something like, " Ha ha ha! That's one less fool! I'll save myself, then." I really don't know.
Kansas was trying to "get with the sound" during this era. They were trying to fit in with all the hair bands. They threw out their violyn player on the live stage and had Steve Morse on guitar for a bit. It was expirmental, it worked for a bit and they ended it...
No offense, but that's not quite accurate. Their 'new' sound had more to do with Elefante replacing Walsh on lead vocals than anything else. The "Drastic Measures" album (from which this song is from) came out in 1983, and their sound didn't get harder edged like the "hair bands" (Dokken, Crue, Ratt, etc.). If anything, it got 'softer' without Walsh.
John told me that Robbie was shown the door because of his drug problem, not for any stylistic reasons. And Morse didn't join until 1986.
I should re-phrase something in my previous post. I said "Robbie was shown the door because of his drug problem." What John (Elefante) actually told me in '84 was that Robbie wasn't in the band anymore because he had a drug problem. He might have left voluntarily to clean himself up, rather than having been "shown the door" by the band. I don't know which it was.
In any case, he got clean (I assume) and rejoined the band later.
I agree with you ken5244, kansas became commercial and soft after 1981 and robbie left a sinking ship, drug problem or not. seems that rich and phil were the only two members of kansas who never had, or openly admitted to drug problems. at any rate drugs did not destroy kansas, kerry livgren did that by not being able to control his personal and private life.
Hmmm ... well, you may be right about Rich & Phil not having drug problems, but I don't remember hearing about Kerry doing drugs either. AFAIK, it was Steve, Dave & Robbie who went down that road.
I would also agree that they got 'softer' after '81, but I'd respecfully disagree about them becoming more commercial. If anything, the 'new' band with Elefante out front was less commercial due to the overt Christian lyrics, and their popularity & record sales diminished significantly.
true, they became more of a cristian type band and yes you are right, that is not mainstream.
I have never heard that kerry was into drugs, but if you watch the 700 club interview with kerry and dave, he sort of eludes to drug use along with dave. I surely don't know but would have to believe he at least experimented with drugs but did not have a problem per say.
through the 70's i find hard to think he didn't take a toke or snort a line or perhaps do a hit of lsd.
I watched that interview ~ a month ago and don't remember Kerry alluding to drug use, but I'll have to watch it again.
He never struck me as a typical '70s drug-using 'rock star.' His lyrics and musicianship were very much the work of someone who was pretty clear headed.
My impression is that his internal struggle wasn't with drugs or a lifestyle, but rather his search for a true faith. That's what drove him, and it was a bumpy road until he found Christianity. I'm glad he's happy. :-)
again i'm sure you are right, he was pretty straight laced. and i don't picture him rallying around the bong, or slicing lines on a mirror. as clear headed as he may have seemed, i still don't believe he was completely innocent in the experimentation of drugs......sorry thats just my opinion.
Yeah, you may or may not be right. I simply don't know. I just don't have a reason to assume he did drugs just 'cuz other musicians did. A lot of artists stayed clean, and a lot also tried drugs briefly and then decided, "hey, this isn't my bag."
The main reason I doubt Kerry was ever much of a drug user is his lyrics. He was searching for deeper meaning in his life, but his lyrics didn't reflect drug use as a vehicle for that or for exploration. Instead, he searched for meaning via faith.
I was just gonna add that I never got around to reading his book, so if anyone reading this thread did and wants to chime in, go for it. Maybe he talked about the subject in the book (?).
Although I am a huge Steve Walsh fan, I must say John Elefante's vocals on this song, Everybody's My Friend and Play the Game Tonight all rate up there near the top for me.
this song boots some serious ass! i can't believe my sister and i used to make fun of it. we were more listening to like the producers and corey hart back then. yikes!
i love this song. its probly my favorite song by kansas, and reply to this if u agree but i hate that guitar hero puts carry on my wayward song on (not that its not a great song) but that distracts people from seeing how good kansas really is

Ken5244 2 years ago
true, they became more of a cristian type band and yes you are right, that is not mainstream.

again i'm sure you are right, he was pretty straight laced. and i don't picture him rallying around the bong, or slicing lines on a mirror. as clear headed as he may have seemed, i still don't believe he was completely innocent in the experimentation of drugs......sorry thats just my opinion.
ke2323 2 years ago

I like the intro, and the chorus, but not so much the verse. Definitely has that '80's sound to it, and the cheesy '80's video production...lol.

Although I am a huge Steve Walsh fan, I must say John Elefante's vocals on this song, Everybody's My Friend and Play the Game Tonight all rate up there near the top for me.

i love this song. its probly my favorite song by kansas, and reply to this if u agree but i hate that guitar hero puts carry on my wayward song on (not that its not a great song) but that distracts people from seeing how good kansas really is
