I actually saw a really good quote from Ben Franklin in my Civ IV game that went something like, "If you sacrifice freedom in order to increase security, you will gain neither, and lose both." I thought that aptly described the Patriot act's harm on america.
Basically, what they're saying is that we live in a world where there are terrorists everywhere and you can stop the terrorists by buying things from Fortune 500 companies and voting Repulican.
