Fecal Matter was never the band we know of as Nirvana'a name. Fecal Matter was a separate high school band Kurt was in Nirvana didn't really have a name before Kurt chose Nirvana, they billed themselves as something different every show before deciding on Nirvana. But Nirvana did in fact go by the name of Pen Cap Chew for a while, among others such as Skid Row.
