I don think the term should be 'taken away'..lol..it's already developed to be that way for so long..but uh... i dont see how that would be a racist move...

But why then, are blacks referred to as AFRICAN American, a Japanese person from Chicago will be called ASIAN American, and a hispanic (often times assumed to be Mexican) as Mexican American, even if they have been here for generations and generations. Only white Americans are just, 'Americans'..like implying they are the actualy Americans..
in latin america they do refer to the whole continent (north and south) as "America".
There are many different terms in English that could have developed other than American. For ex: US-an,or US-ee (similar sound to Iraqi) If people from Trinidad and Tobago are referred to as "Trinbagonians" , why not?
people outside themselves refer to themselves as that to be more specific cause its well understood at least in 99% of the world that we r all americans in this continent, but it just happens that people in the u.s r so ignorant that they use it as a form of fake nationalism,(ie)anti-americanism??what kind of bullshit is that,its like anti-mexicanism that sounds lame
