Thats strange here in Canada where we have more restrictive laws I have had no trouble finding ammo, pistol or rifle. We have experienced a shortage on primers and brass though. I ordered 60 brass for my 257wbymag 6 months ago and am still waiting, probably because its not a common round , so I have been buying loaded rounds shooting them off then making my own loads.

Part of the problem may lie in the tendency in recent times (~last 30 years) for soliders to spray bullets all over the place. This is partly due to modern weapon design but also training. I recall seeing the ratios of ammo used to NVA body counts in Vietnam and it was something like 50,000:1. Just staggering... This is not an efficient way to win a conflict, if anything it plays into the hands of insurgents as the cost of maintaining the operation becomes prohibitive.

And the 3 gun shows I have been to in the last 3 months seamed to have plenty. Let's put it this way, we are at 8.750% sales tax. A box of 100ct Yellow Jacket HP .22LR ammo costs about $8.00 before tax today (price likely already including the federal ammo taxation, with sharp increase). With sales tax, it is about $9.50. So yes, we have quite a high Ammo tax.

These bullets normally cost $5.00 before sales taxes. We're all getting screwed by the retailers as well because they are in such demand now, so ammo is absolutely hurting every Californian's wallet right now.
