freschezza, leggerezza , vivacità, insomma io vorrei suonarla cosi... bellissimo anche quando lui simpaticamente lascia di suonare le semicrome =) bella versione
bodzio--I don't think he really even messed up. But if it was me, I'd forgot not only what I was playing, but also my name probably! She's a real cutie!
kedmann - No kidding! She IS not amazing violinist, but ... she is a BABE!
Anyway, if you want to see her really flirting with Gordan, watch part 2 of this video. And.. Gordon had a little hiccup, and only highly trained professional would notice (yours truly including :D).
I would really love to hear Julia some of Henryk Wieniawski stuff. Unfortunately, it seems that she does not play him.
oatboy--she was laughing from the beginning, so I don't think it was him. Maybe just the joy and playfulness of Mozart's music got the better of her! Fine performance!
I think he "messes up" because as a violinist, he is probably used to making the violin entrances and not the viola ones. He probably just got switched around, it's easy to do. I think it's funny and he does sound pretty damn good.
Julia is now the new leader for The St.Martin-in-the-Fields. Sir Neville conceded the seat to her. She did not get there by being mediocre. I was at her latest concert with the Academy. She IS the leader.
One should understand how great an achievement this is. Julia is only at her young tender age of 26 (as of Feb 2009). No one has ever led this prestigious group this young, and that says kudos about her.
Crikey, what an opinionated bunch we have commenting on this clip! I'll respect opinions, but some of this is just rude. These are two of the most talented musicians alive. Gordan is one of the most all round inspiring men on the planet, not to mention concertmaster of the LSO. Shame on some of you. Take your cynicism and lack of taste somewhere else, this is magic and a it's a gift to be able to watch this for free.
Mozart has been dead for more than two centuries. What does being dead have to do with anything? I'm certainly not going to replace my Mozart collection with CDs of living composers, nor am I going to replace my David Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter collections with living performers who can't begin to approach their skills. Most of the professional violinists whom I know rate Heifetz as the best violinist of the recording era with Oistrakh second. Julia is very pretty but who cares?
The Violist totally overshadows her. His sound is witty and charming. Her sound is so dead... goddamn, I hate non-violinists pretending they understand what they are hearing... I removed a thumbs down for you.
When you play in the middle and have nothing to do but listen to everything, you develop a better idea of the big picture. Talk to any *dedicated* person that plays the middle voice all/most of the time- they know what instrument/voice is doing what at critical points if not at any given moment. As for his over shadowing her, that may be a result of him being closer to the recording equipment.
Basically a war of who can play it faster, the heifetz/primrose is quite entertaining to say the least. I do love that one but not for it's "austerity." This one is more into the real spirit of making music and they are having a great time.
Julia's an establisted top notch violinist. She's at ease & having a good time, that is when music is at its best. No more learning or worryng to hinder the artist. Gordon is slightly being intimadated by Julia
Still this is a gr8 pc. Both artists are in their casual cloths doing a recordng where mistakes can b made & corrected, unlike a formal concert. No pressure here
So why not just listen 2 the music and forget abt critising
I have to say having worked with the guy that there's very little ego there. Just barely contained enthusiasm for the music and it's communication. Some people are very animated when they talk also. They are both marvellous - and different. What's wrong with the sound? (Apart from the marvellous ****-up that we all love). Too much blandness out there. Let's have some spirit. And stop listening with your eyes.
Good comment - and yet I have often heard Gordan Nikolic perform as a soloist. His movements do NOT translate into music and the results are musically much less memorable than people gather, and I mean precisely those people that, sadly, happen to listen with their eyes.
I agree there is too much blandness out there- however inner spirit always come across without being diffused by too much extraneous bodily movement.
btw does anyone know if Julia Fischer is any relation of Annie Fischer who along with Alfred Brendel was one of the greatest Mozart pianists? No mention of her ancestry on Wicki. OK, Fischer is not an unusual name so probably no relation ...
Fischer/Nikolic are very professional and huge pleasure to listen to, but for me, easily the best interpretation of K364 is Perlman/Zuckerman/Israel Philh, D. Grammophon 1982. Especially the Andante, tears come to my eyes while listening, it tears me apart and I don't cry easily. It eats into my soul. Does anyone have a video of this recording?
I will check that out. I like the Allegro as recorded by Stockholm Sinfonietta w/ Bernt Lysell and Nils-Erik Sparf (1988, BIS CD-205). (Best I could find on iTunes if that tells you what kind of classical listener I am :) Also agree with the earlier comment that the tempo in this video sounds a little fast.
Gordon is incredible. He put so much dynamism into his part and plays hand in glove with the orchestra. Julia plays it much safer and pays attention mostly to herself and Gordon. You can hear the difference between orchestral and soloist experience in their playing. That said, this is great playing!
Thank you for posting this video;I enjoyed watching great musicians performing one of my favorite pieces of music. Thank you YouTube for existing and allowing the World an opportunity to see this!
I do find it incredible that almost nobody talks about Gordon here. First of all, as I violinist, I think he is 10 times the musician here and he's doing on a viola which he seldom plays. For those who don't know, he is the concertmaster of the London Symphony, BandArt, and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. Julia is a great violinist but I get the distinct impression she is deferring to Gordon who is simply a monster musician.
Well, I suspect most of our viewers are male and so it is only natural for us to be drawn to a good looking young lady with immense talent, don't you think? :D
It's a distraction much more than a mistake, but if I were Gorden, I would forgotten even entirely the entire music when confronted by such a charming lady.
Julia Fischer has been nominated by the prestigeous classical music magzine "Gramophone" for the Classic FM Gramophone "Artists of the Year Award" 2007. There are 10 nominees. The winner will be the one with the most votes from people who go the website of the Gramophone Magazine.

This Gordan/Gordon's exhibiton is so egotistical- communicating in an idiotic way to have himself
put in front...ever been to the LSO and seen him
move about way too much?
Julia Fischer understands prudence which is what this music needs as well as joyful musicmaking.

I wonder how someone can maintain the posture of a ballerina while twisting themselves round a fiddle for hours every day!
The viola needs more grit in the tone, to me, it's a bit top-heavy. Perhaps that's a reason for taking it slower, as another poster noted.
