I don't know where you live and I didn't bother reading what you two are fighting about, but there is a wage gap between men and women, even in the USA. Time had an article on it in 2010. Some research says it exists where women receive the lower pay. This is the view usually portrayed in media and the one most people think exists. Most of those studies are biased if you read how it was conducted. They usually do not control many factors that play into wage differences and usually compare very deferent careers and different levels of education in lumps sums or worse. Any research that is biased or poorly controlled is useless so a number of these are also useless.

Do I believe that it is all intentional? No I do not. The designers of these ads only see what they're doing from an artistic angle. But, they do contribute to sexism overall, and all creative acts are based on preexisting ideas. Whether our society is intentionally sexist or not, awareness matters.

I’d say about 90% of the studies are controlled for location. Even the poorly controled ones. Most researchers can’t afford to do nationwide studies. But that’s an educated guess as I did not count all of them. I can factually say a large majority do control that factor however.

Most of the best controlled, most unbiased studies have found men and women earning roughly equal pay (where sex was the only deference) or women earning slightly more. Yes I said SLIGHTLY more. I find it troublesome that this is not reported more often but I guess there wouldn’t be anything to report if the general public knew more about the issue… or lack thereof. Same types of research and outcomes go for race.

Age seems to still have some issues but that is not surprising and personally I don’t think there is much wrong with that. On the other hand, research into the “good old boy” system (favor to friends and family) has been all but nonexistent. My personal experience is that it is still in full swing and is one area of work equality that really needs cleaning up.

Even in areas that have a long tradition of being female specialized (such as 'Parenting') Men are proven to be far superior. Check out Warren Farrell's 'Father & Child Reunion. Men aren't "proven" to be far superior in parenting. The reason children of single fathers tend to fair a little better than children of single mothers is because people (from common knowledge, observation, and personal experience) are less likely to "mess" with kids if they know there's a father involved.
