The header "Learning Objectives" in the desscription says it all. Awareness ok, but they demonize drugs in general, by leaving out the brand name and comparison to what's the safe prescribed dosage. It doesn't help a documentary to blend tons of pills in front of the interviewed persons.

I've abused a great deal of stimulants but as I grew older I have taken to ordering sedatives and opiates and in moderate amounts with a nice collection of bud. I abstained wholly but through several injuries etc. I gathered a taste for Tramadol and discovering plenty of Xans which coincided with my desire to abuse them to the point where I suffered 36 hours of terrible withdrawal that I mostly was forced to endure @ work. I'm having another go with attempts to exercise A LOT of self control.hmm

Prescription painkiller overdoses are something I don't understand. You know EXACTLY what you're getting EVERY TIME, so it takes a special type of stupid to die under these circumstances.

If you OD on fentanyl, that is forgivable as it is hard to measure your dose with fentanyl. Overdosing on a prescription opiate is near impossible unless you have the brain of a ten year old. Benzodiazepams' like xanax I won't go in to. I hate the drug, benzo's and alcohol are the worst drugs in my opinion.

I have suffered with severe chronic pain for 6 years I use extremely strong opiates to relieve my pain.Though I have had what would be termed as "Highs" from medications prescribed to me,I hate these "highs" that occur,I do not get any "enjoyment" from being screwed up I hate it.After a recent operation the surgeon gave me intravenous Fentayl, a LARGE dose,I was totally spun out for several hours and I hated being that way,it was horrible.I ended up an extra day in hospital because of it.

Doctors are the worst pushers, and shrinks are even worse still. (In fact, if you are addicted to illicit drugs, the shrink will put you on addictive Rx drugs as their "cure.")

BTW, according to peer-reviewed medical journals as many as 200,000+ Americans die every year as a side effect of Rx drugs.

Awareness is one thing, however, prohibiting those who are in terrible or terminal pain from legitmately aquiring the drugs may be the result of the sort of hypervigilance that is becoming more common in the popular media.

When it comes to prescription drugs, even one dose can be the end depending on how it reacts with a persons body chemistry, other meds, and dosage amount. Addiction is a disease. Unfortunately, even recreational use of ANY substance can lead to addiction in ANYONE.

This seems to really be an american problem. We don't really have that here. At least here in Switzerland. Even though, we seem to have the highest suicide rate among young people. So that's a contradiction. But I don't know anyone who's hooked up on prescription drugs. We do have a lot of heroin and cocaine addicts, and to stuff like speed and ecstasy. But the pharmaceutical phenomena is interesting.

I mean no disrespect or harm, and I apologize for those who have lost loved ones, but I will not stop using my 5mg percocets. I am not ashamed and honestly have no plan on stopping anytime soon. I'm also a chemist and understand all pharmokinetics and pharmacology notes on my meds. Again, I am sorry for your losses, but if used correctly, there is no harm.

Go after the drug mills and internet sales on drugs. Stop punishing people in need of medication for chronic pain. I take my medication as directed and have never looked for illegal drugs. Yeah and try stopping a benzo after you've been taking it only a short time. Like some kind of nightmare withdraw symptoms. Had to be taken to the emergency room with seizures. Then had to taper slowly on a medical withdraw program. Was the most stressful thing I've had to deal with so far. How is that different from crack or anything else now? And that junk is for anxiety?? I'd never look down on anyone with a drug problem now.

@ZarathustrasCrown if used while awake to treat anxiety especially in high doses it's extremely addicting. if used in the way you describe, clonazepam is a very effective drug that helps in radical ways. however once abused (2 or more milligrams to get high on average) it harms more than helps.

@doston1 yep....actually prescription drugs are definently as bad or worse than street drugs. I have had an addiction to prescribed drugs. One, you always get the same thing. Its always pure and if its benzos or opiates, they are very very very very physicaly addicting. I was prescribed xanax, klonopin, and ativan, all at different times and they were way harder to stop than most street drugs.

I had heard a while ago that scientists had isolated the pain relieving properties of the opium alkaloid removing the "high" that one gets from it. Question: How is this going to stop drug abuse for the already addicted? Removing the "high" does not stop the physical dependance that opium drugs cause so stopping cold turkey would still lead to withdrawel. Science is looking in the wrong area, they need to find a way to stop withdrawel so that people can stop using in comfort.

@lesterclaypool1 I have my doubts...the pain relieving properties of opiates/opioids are inseparably connected to the high, the pain relief and the euphoric high are both the results of activity in the exact same center of the brain, so to remove one would automatically remove the other as well...where did you hear about it out of curiosity? I'm not saying you didn't hear that, I just don't think that would work pharmacologically and neurologically...

As to the source of the information I'm taking a stab in the dark in saying that it originated from CBC radio. We were in the car and it was being discussed on a panel program and as we only really listen to two stations it would have been CBC or Radio 800 (Windsor) but the latter only carried syndicated talk shows, not panel shows. I'd be happy to try to properly reference it for you if you need the info.
