I agree with you. I watched a commentary where RTD thought it was funny how the Doc "accidentally" insults Martha. Frankly, I think if Martha were White instead of Black, they would not have felt compelled to make fun and mock her. To add insult to injury the job at UNIT, that the Doc recommended Martha for, was supposed to make up for his behavior. That is an insult, as Martha was not the Doc's employee, but someone he pursued to be his companion; rather an apology is warranted.

I agree that his treatement of Martha might not have been ideal, but that he never really willingly hurt her.

And I don't think her colour has anything to do with it either. Freema is a brilliant actress and Martha is a great character, it's just that her character and the character of the Doctor clashed a bit.

Martha's story is an unrequited romance, and I don't hesitate to think that the story would have been carried out this way even if she was white.

We will always disagree on this but if Freema were White, this unrequited love and generally disrespectful performance by David Tennant towards Freema Agyeman would have never been tolerated. When has Doctor Who in it's entire history brought on a beautiful companion just to make her life miserable and insult her? Never before until Freema Agyeman's Martha character was created.

I personally really enjoyed the story of the unrequited romance...it gave Martha a chance to develop as a character and gave her more dimension.

Part two:

I really believe that the Doctor does feel remorse for the way he treated her, and I don't think that (as you, Lucille7777, mentioned earlier) he recommened her for the job at UNIT because he was trying to redeem himself, but because apologies and anything heartfelt is generally difficult for him and that he hoped that he might be ablet to make something good come of her travels with him and not had simply caused her heart to break.

On another note, do you know for sure that Marthat was created specifically for Freema?

I really don't think that racisim came into play with her character and her relationship with the Doctor. And I think that her looks (which by far, Freema is a beautiful woman, there is no denying that) being what they are that in a different situation (namely not so soon after he'd lost Rose) he would have treated her differently.

"Martha" was created by RTD before Freema took the role, but I suspect the unrequited love angle was a ruse to get rid of Freema if she didn't work out as Martha. I've listened to the commentaries and its just the way RTD and David Tennant discuss her that I don't like. You see how they axed her from Torchwood because she had the balls to get another job at ITV in Law and Order; and David's smirk after the hug, at the end of Doctor's Daughter said it all - total disrespect.

Well, they couldn't exactly have a romance right after Rose. That'd cause a lot of outrage.

And I do admit that Martha is a bit of a transitional character, and that maybe that wasn't fair for an actress as brilliant as Freema.

As well as I think that the BBC overreacted by axing her because she wanted to do Law and Order. I say good for her, though. She deserves to do other things and to branch out of Doctor Who, and the BBC has no right to stop her.

Yes I agree except that at the end of Family of Blood the Doctor betrayed Martha by asking the Matron to come with him as his companion, and that everything John Smith was, he had in him and that they could at least "try", but she said no, so he went back to Martha, and Martha asked how she was and that she would go and speak to her but he said no, so what made it o.k. for him to have a relationship with the Matron but not with Martha? Rose was still an issue for him.

I think we've hit something that we agree on. Matron vs. Martha being a bit unfairly balanced.

However, John Smith fell in love with the Matron, and she realised that though he was the same man, he wasn't. I can't see the Doctor loving her. I don't think the Doctor was ready for romance so soon after losing Rose.

John Smith is such a wimp. He cried and complained and treated Martha horribly amd he is a real pain in the ass. You earlier referred to Martha as a "transitional" character, but that is not how she was described to the public, yet they knew all along that they would get rid of her at the end of Series 3. I feel duped and as brilliant as Freema's performance was, I'm sorry they even created Martha because they didn't treat her well, so really what was the point of it all?

Hmmm at the moment, I've got an "L.A. Without A Map" to "Jenny was a Friend of Mine" by the Killers coming...and (for today anyway, it changes everyday) my primary focus is a few sad Doctor/Rose videos.

I actually heard the song you picked recently in the supermarket, and I was like "OMG it's soo perfect!" and I wanted to go home and make the video, but the song file was being stupid. So I'm going to see if I can download that again.

And when Rose does come back (If she does, just what I've heard) Then she will only be in for one ep, and as its been confirmed that **SPOILER** Davros is to be returning**SPOILER** Maybe they're linked, and as the Doctor will be regenerating in that one/two episode. So connection there maybe?

Alrighty I looked up Davros as I had no idea what you were talking about, but he's linked to the Daleks...I'd heard that the Daleks and the Cybermen coming back in series four...but I dunno, I didn't hear anything about David leaving just yet (only the usual rumours that he was leaving midseason, which the BBC said wasn't true and that he'd be staying on for the specials).

But I just think end series 5, because they didnt tell us til end that Billie was leaving. So I just have a suspicion, and I thought maybe a connection. Im a conspiracy freak :S
