@route29a Thanks! My Dad filmed it, & I made it into a video. Those are modified flatcars designed to hold smaller pieces of wood, & were custom built for the St. Lawrence & Atlantic, & NB Southern RR's for fast loading, & unloading.
That's a movement bell (fast ring) to let everyone know the train is getting ready to move. Used mostly in quiet zones where the horns cannot be used. Otherwise, just the slower ring yard bell is used. It's really not that bad when you're used to hearing them like I am. This video is louder than usual for some reason, so that's probably why it may sound annoying.
I don't mind bells, just certain manufacturers of bells are worse than others, and the fast ring tends to cancel out all the engine noise (which is personally what I like to hear on a video). There's one bell I've heard that sounded like a cowbell!
Good news! The mill is re-opening on June 22nd! YAY!!! That means trains will be back too! The reason for the re-opening is tax breaks, & an increased worldwide demand according to the Bangor Daily News. Let's hope for everyone's sake it stays open for good this time.
Thanks. Yeah, the big "G" is a dying breed. Pan Am has taken over the operations now, so if you see any Guilford engines again, make sure you have a camera with you, because they won't be around much longer in that paint scheme.
how far deep in maine is this yard? way out there or close to massachusetts.... i live in athol ma and would love to check this place out.... looks so friendly and like the old times.
Well, there's not a whole lot there really, but...It's in a restricted yard that's monitored/patrolled by border patrol, & you'll need authorization by them, & a legitimate reason to be in there, since it's also joined by a railroad bridge going to, & from Canada. My father is a local fire fighter, & has authorized access to this area, so that's how he was able to get this rarely seen occasion on film. Sorry that some portions of the video were left out for security reasons. Thanks for watching.
Nice. I've got a few of the Guilford GP40's in N scale myself. Thanks for watching my videos. More videos including 2 of them featuring B&M (Guilford/Pan Am) #333 on the way!
Nice!! haha i got one high nose grs mec no number yet and i asked for a grs gp40 for christmas and my bday and my dad actually got two i think on ebay im excited!!! haha im modeling guilford so the more the better!! are ur nscale ones atlas? mine are...the atlas master are so awesome with there decoder equipped locos
Thanks. He is on YT now under "GP9RailfanFan" if you want to ask him about it. He said it was around lunch time when he filmed it. You'll see the crew climb out of the loco & go to lunch at the end of the video.
Wow, listen to those rails creak! I have to admit that it's really nice to see a "good ol'" Guilford unit in a world where "PanAm" is the word of the day...
Really nice footage. Not everyone gets to see everyday switching like this. Any idea where all that pulp wood is headed?
Thanks. It's headed to Woodland for processing. The only way to get there nowadays is through St Stephen, N.B. because the rails on the rest of the Calais Branch have been removed from Ayers Jct, to Washington jct. (for now) for a temporary trail. Key word is "temporary". The state wants new updated rails to go back down ASAP, when the demand for them gets higher. Thanks for watching!
Neat Video - thanks for sharing it.

That bell, is SO annoying! One thing I cannot stand is railroads that use their bells like that.

Tell your father that was an excellent video. I'm so used to watching slower switching maneuvers that this one seemed incredibly fast in comparison.
