aunt petunia actually lost a sister that day, and she probaly felt sad about since she called lily a freak. i can understand i would be guilty if my sister died and i treated her so poorly and never told her i loved her. i beleive she would like to show lily she loved her by taking in harry. which was the only way she could actually show her love to her sister. thats wat i personally think petunia really felt.

I always felt for Petunia, I could relate to her. Her sister was the 'pretty' one the 'smart' one and most of the 'magical' one. Her sister was special in every way and so got the most attention from the family. As a sibling in similar cirmimstance it's hard not to be bitter to teh other party.

I did feel a bit sympathetic for Petunia after reading book 7 even though she is still a wiotch (not really cuz thats what she wanted to be :P). The last time she saw harry (in the series at least) she seemed like she wanted to say goodbye. And im glad they had a lil moment b/w them in a deleted scene of Deathly Hallows Part 1. It wasnt all gushy but it showed how she really felt.

So what we find out is that Petunia actually loves magic but she hates everyone related to it because she is hurt by not "being chosen" to go to Hogwarts, imagine if that happened to you, your sibling gets to go and enjoy a magical world and then becomes an expert at using magic, that must have been really hard for Petunia I felt a bit of pity for her even tho she is a nasty person lol

Aunt Petunia does have a small place in her heart for Harry, which she hides underneath the jealousy she held for her sister. The experiences she went through as a young child, revealed through Snape's memories, hardened her as well toward Harry. But in a couple moments she does slip during the departure scene, but she covers her true attitude towards Harry by doing things such as complimenting her son for being so compassionate.

when the dursley leave privet drive at the beginning of book seven, petunia hesitates once before she leaves the living room, as if she wanted to say something yet - but she doesn´t. i think its that what joanne meant. there is more than petunia shows - but she can´t reveal it.. for whatever reason. she actually cares for harry but despite dudley she can´t tell him. well, thats what i think.. ;) hope it helped out a bit.
