  • this song reminds me Psychoctopus solo of Aquiles Priester, good Daveee!! lml

  • He slows down when the horns kick in

  • Tight and punchy to the max.. Weckl has control precision and groove and techniques..he shits on Chambers in this enviro. Bissonette, Smith and Weckl did big band well. The rest of em??eh...maybe I'm forgetting someone? Where's Ian Paice though. He can play swing hot too.

  • when was the concert held...it looks like it was back in the 80's

  • when a groove is so smooth it makes you smile you know its going to be amazing

  • i just jizzed

  • Who has the sax solo?

  • @MrTimmeh1990 I think it's Steve Marcus.

  • @Gammodore It is him, yes.

  • Fuckin' LOVE this song

  • t'es trop bon enfoiré :)

  • god, i love his feel!

  • does anybody who's playing bass on this concert?

  • @rufioclark i think its dave carpenter.

  • Great, great, great!!

  • Is that Bobby Shew on Lead?

  • @PalabraViva3 looks like him thats for sure.

  • For me this is too funky and not swingy enough.

  • Hey can anyone tell me the name of this track? I used to have it when I was a kid and uses to play along. Anyone know the name????

  • @mattygreenwood13 Mercy Mercy Mercy :)

  • 4:49 it's george costanza!

  • He's different than the BR version. He is as good and probably tops of the drummers who try to play with the BR band who seem to be mere time keepers. BR filled the dead spots and lead ins most tastefully. He drove his band. Weckl did a lot of that but with a more modern approach. His multitude of terrific sounding toms tuned low (and less articulate) mostly. Is that smaller cymbal between the two larger on his right a hat or just something very dry? Whatever. I want one.

  • how would i learn to play the very first beat? 0:42 to 1:23

  • Man, I love the way he hits the cymbal at 4:14.!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • It's a good thing he remembered where he parked his drum set, he would have been lost on stage for hours searching for it.

  • Man, I love this fill at 3:30

  • This Dave Wack job guy couldn`t hold Buddy Rich`s sticks or sweat rag let alone play the instrument called a percussian "trap set" better than Mr Rich.

  • Sorry if I offend any or all of you, but fuck you. I`ve seen most of the so called "best" drummers, "played" percussian for 40 yrs until I lost my left arm and to say this dude was/is better, smoother or in a groove better than Buddy Rich is straight up pure bullshit. Quit smokin PCP and listen with your ears, not your eyes.

  • Dave may not have the best solos but he is ridiculous in his groove... Hands down one of the greatest drummers ever...

  • and... i just jizzed. many, many times.

  • Who's this woman?

  • Oh the mullet.....its beautiful

  • I didn't know Mel Gibson played the drum?

  • I didn't know Mel Gibson played the drum?

  • if groove was a weapon, i would be dead now.

  • thumps down for the 7 people that put thumps down to this fantastic music

  • Awesome!!!!

  • Isn't this the guy that was on Lethal Weapon 3?

    "Roger...get the CAT!"

  • Fuck me, i know the drummers awesome but check out those trumpet player!!

  • SHAIT!

  • sorry, a little bit boring...

  • what is the name of this song??

  • Yessssssssss

  • the beginning is tight

  • I love you Mr. Dave Weckl hahaha.

  • that x -hat sounds awesome

  • buddy rich+steve gadd+vinnie colaiuta=dave weckl

  • I don't think it's really possible to call buddy or dave better than each other... apples and oranges.

  • Dave is the good man! enjoy the talent! I have none but my ear! It's great, let your mind go to the reaches of where they take you!

  • hoax, you're a moron. Nobody comes close to Buddy. Dave is outstanding but there is only one Buddy Rich.

  • MERCY MERCY MERCY its dave weckl!!!!!!1

  • I'm speechless.

  • Yep, fitting in with the music instead of dominating it!

  • the best is gregg bissonette....

  • man, she must be Buddy's daughter, because she looks just like him!

  • @zazeify That is his daughter her name is Cathy Rich

  • @pr192001 Ahhhhh, yes. Was just reading Neil Peart's book and he talks about working with her to make this show happen.

  • Anyone got sheets for that piano version?

  • Isn't the sax player next to Marcus the one from Chick Corea's Electric Band

  • @aapje1988 Probably... They look very similar.

  • Very different from Buddy in style, but on an equal level. Hes a product of the bar that Buddy set for all drummers. I think even Buddy would call Dave the best now.

  • @silencetraitors I rekon Steve Smith is best now.

  • weckl is so great...saw him twice in chicago...dammmm

  • Best drummer ever! Honestly!

  • the sax player @ the end "whhhaaaaaow!!!" mile wide grin

  • This is one of those feel good summer park songs that are family friendly, played by some 80s cover band with 15 people, half of which merely sway and clap. :)

  • i wish i had a rad mullet.....

  • ahhh, anyone has the version with dave weckl and the late great steve marcus.. It has a kick ass sop sax solo!

  • anyone knows who's the bass player ??! Whatta amazing job!

  • I love that back-hand cymbal crash at 1:59 :P

  • @ParallaxDrums haha :D. It's awesome! :D

  • Lovin the hair lol

  • I like the juxtaposition of the tux and the mullet

  • My favourite.

  • I have 2 different kinds of liquids leaking out of my body.... tears, and you know the rest.

  • mmmm ..... jazzy.

  • the moment he started playing and the piano kicked in, goose bumps through my whole body

  • I saw Eric Marienthal!

  • I love Dave as much as BR ;) He's got great groove and for bassist it's god like :P

  • Rad!!! great vid!

  • 4:53-4:55 Bill Gates is playing sax.....hahaha

  • wow dave is so smooootthhh

  • man, that sax player is so cool :) fits with dave's style so well

  • This guy must suck because ther isn't any Tugga Tugga, Tugga dum dum double bass happening?

  • I saw this guy do a clinic here in Detroit in 90 and it was mind boggling. He told us that at times he practiced for ten to twelve hours a day. Just goes to show, you get out of it what you put into it. This guy is definately in an elite group of drummers. Keep in mind, this was twenty one years ago!!! Amazing stuff....

  • mr dave weckl kan mm

  • Atta boy Dave!! It was perfect. I wish there was more of this style of drumming in music today instead of the same old boring beat, different song.

  • I love Dave...

But he is getting torn apart by the Sax player with the 'fro.

  • mu...musikman2: Joe Zawinul; Mercy, Mercy, Mercy :) Have a nice day...

  • Thank you! =D

  • could someone please tell me what song it is??? i recognise it SO well!! i think i even played i a couple of years ago!

  • @mumumumusikman2

I think this song is Mercy Mercy Mercy

  • Impresionante!

  • There oughta be a youtube page that just allows for this incessant debate over 'best' drummer (as if).

  • I love to hear the different styles between artists, how they interpret or fit in to the pice or band. then to see how the art of drumming has evolved for the artists. next, to see how 'tastes' change regarding what drums should do in a piece. then you filter it all through your own taste.

  • I love the fill at 3:35 and the one before it...so nice

  • ohh my is a monster

  • this is actually better than Buddy's version. Dave Weckl isn't hogging the attention with ridiculously fast fills like Buddy Rich did instead he's providing a hell of a groove.

  • @thehoaxbuster And whenever Weckl plays fast, it's tasteful.

  • @thehoaxbuster amen to that

  • @thehoaxbuster hey pal, thats what made buddy great. relax, everyone has different playing styles, thats what buddy rich did. just let everyone play the way theyre gunna play. odds are no ones gunna change how they play because of your comment, so chill.

  • @kelsbannon

Did I seem agitated or as if I was trying to change people's styles? So chill, it's an opinion :)

  • @thehoaxbuster agreed. and so smooth....

  • Great song, great big band and one of the most talanted drummer in the world...Dave Weckl!!!

  • who plays bass?

  • this is the most talented drummer around today. (my option only)

  • (its called an opinion:P)

  • @johninis not quite sure if id say the most talented its hard enough in my opinion to even say there is only 1 drummer most talented in the world but i do have to say he is one of the most talented i ever heard

  • Best Mercy Mercy Mercy version ever...

  • @ShawnSteinfeger definitely

  • did anyone happen to notice that cymbal hit Weckyl stuck in , in the middle of that roll, right at the very end of this awesome song and performance? Dave if you are out there you are the most amazing drummer in the world--and you knoew what I love? Your expression and intensity as this song comes to a climax tells me you know it. Well, dammit someone should say-you got the groove, the gift...you're everything you hoped you would be when you were a child.

  • what minute is that cymbal hit you say? And yes I agree, I really think it can't get any better than this......

  • Who is that SAX player...??? Man, He tears it UP

Of course, Dave is my FAVORITE drummer....

  • The sax player is the great Steve Marcus, unfortunately no longer with us.

  • AMEN To that . R.I.P.

  • @kc5tng Steve Marcus

  • Very nice, I like Weckl a lot. I think this chart was a good choice for him, it suits his playing a lot. If you can ignore the techniquey stuff, you start to realise that he really makes a great sound. Good stuff. I do prefer Adderly's version of this, but Dave's still an absolute master.

  • ignore what? Every single thing I've listened toit about 100 times--every singlew thing is well planned well orchestrated and yses, he has the groove--he blows all away including rich coluta and peart moon, they all suck compared to this guy--he puts his whole self into his drums--he has the holy spirit

  • I didn't mean it in a bad way. I just mean that a lot of people watch/listen to Weckl and get hung up on his chops. But as well as that he grooves brilliantly and, even more than that, makes a great sound on the drums. Sound is a lot more than gear! It's down to the individual. I've heard dave sound just like this on a Yamaha hig gig. So when I said ignore, I just meant that I like to think of his sound first, and his chops later.

  • Buddy Rich was a great drummer BUT, Dave smokes Buddy"s butt. No disrespect to Buddy!

  • really. you probably havent listened to many buddy charts... or maybe you dont like buddy's style... but dave weckl does not have any more talent or skill than buddy. buddy was ridiculous (in a good way).

  • I don't know if I agree with that really...but Dave definitely brings a different set of rules to the table in comparison to Buddy. Both innovators of/in their time. Big difference, in my opinion, Buddy usually singled everything--Dave has un-real control over triplets and doubles. Both of them own the kit like no body's business.

  • I miss the 80's era Weckl.. now he has turned a lil' bit repetitive

  • me too, totally

  • this is a nice arrangement. but i feel like it should be more laid back. the original recordings with cannonball adderly and joe zawinul have a much more soulful vibe, and i think thats better for the song.

  • Yeah, but soul is'nt exactly what Weckl is known for, as amazing drummer he is...

  • 1:58

  • Dave, your balls must be Tach Machal sized to play such fucking crazy stuff!

  • Love this Version of Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!

  • Drums asside, the bassist absolutely rocks!!

  • Yeah, I was so pissed, before I had ever seen this vid, we played this song in our jazz band, and I played it slap style because it sounded the best for the song, and he was like....ummmm what are you doing, play fingerstyle. I was so pissed.

  • Whos the tenor soloist, he got mad fingering skills

  • este video es great porque weckl en su mejor momento la rompe

  • this is pretty sick, though I think I like his album version more, it's a little more laid back sounding

  • he's playing at a memorial. honoring buddy rich by playing one of his songs as best he can. every one knows buddy was/is the first best drummer ever. = P

  • whats with dave wick? he dosnt bat a eye to buddy rich or does anyoneelse in this memorial. ther was only one buddy .that had it all. if yous on hwere are drummers you should know that your self.did yous ever hear of the word flawless?that was buddy .the one and ony one ,.

  • Did yous ever hear of grammar?

  • Thanks for posting this. Wish someone would again post the studio recording of Goodbye Yesterday....

  • Comment removed

  • and "Time Check."

  • They info says it all "dave weckl with his smooth drumming skills", they really are smooth!

  • If you don't think this guy is set apart from everyone --I said everyone--including buddy rich--just watch it again until you do see it--look at his left hand going on the hi hat ther;s no one who does that with such grace and rythm..you hear me NOONE

  • hes amanzing but hes not buddy

  • yea thank god

  • lol i feel so bad for the lead trumpet player at the end. he didn't expect the ending to last that long. sick drumming too.

  • what daaaa hell¡¡¡

  • What piece is this?

  • Mercy Mercy Mercy, by Cannonball Adderley. Written by Joe Zawinul by the way.

  • What a muther fuckin orgasmic groove 0:42 to 0:52

  • Dave Weck = Amazing!

    Buddy Rich = 1 of a Kind!

I'll take Buddy over any other, anytime!

He had something, that you just can't put into words....

Sorry to the Weckl fans....but Buddy was THE MAN!

  • lol i think none of the weckl fans disagree that buddy was the man... weckl is a whole different drummer, he pwns any way you look at it.

  • yeah! Weckl IS amazing.... I dont disagree =)

  • Wow, the head of our jazz ensemble said If I played this tune using slap bass that would be retarded. I knew this song would sound better with that. Now he is the stupid one.

  • amazing!

  • i don't dig the snare sound at all... just sounds too fat and full for me, only a matter of my opinion and nothing else.

    otherwise dave weckl's the man!

  • I kinda like it

  • this guy kinda looks like richard marx, lol. but other than that hes a great drummer! but i like neil's performance better.

  • Fail

  • Actually, I don't want to start some sort of argument or anything, but I'm pretty sure funk/groove/soul is a lot about accenting offbeats. (ex: Dave Garibaldi, Steve Gadd, etc) I could be wrong, but that's just what I'm told...

  • I'm just talking about the pocket. Maybe it's because he's out front instead of next to the rhythm section, but he's not locked in. Or maybe I just don't like his feel. (I like those other cats, btw.)

  • The only shit thing about Dave Weckl is his haircut. Remember this is a drummers tribute concert. All the drummers on this gig would be sacrificing a bit of straight ahead pocket playing for a bit of flair, fills and big hits, basically cause the drummer is the feature in each chart. Dont get me wrong, less is often more, and it takes skill for a drummer to just lay out a solid feel, but this gig is about letting the drummers show off a bit. (ala like the showman that was Buddy Rich).

  • Shows how much you know about drumming. You've got to be fucking kidding me dude. How can you not like him. Even if you don't like him, you CANNOT deny that he is extraordinary. He truly is one of the best modern drummers we've got. His playing definitely has soul...

  • I don't deny that he's extraordinary, but he sounds like a drum machine. And I would say "No" he doesn't compare to Buddy Rich. I listen to Buddy Rich a lot. Buddy Rich has a lot more subtlety, nuance, musicianship, etc. in addition to having a lot of technique.

  • have u even heard weckl lately?

  • I'm talking about the video

  • atpal, you just don't know what the heck your talking about

  • i bet you love travis barker haha

  • Who are you to talk like that about Dave weckl? Steve Gadd :-)? On my opinion, he's one of the best drummer of all the time...I respect your opinion but...sincerly, it's very strange...

  • yes sir funk at its finnest

  • whos the sax dude? he PWNZ!

  • Steve Marcus. I love his hair!
