Tight and punchy to the max.. Weckl has control precision and groove and techniques..he shits on Chambers in this enviro. Bissonette, Smith and Weckl did big band well. The rest of em??eh...maybe I'm forgetting someone? Where's Ian Paice though. He can play swing hot too.
He's different than the BR version. He is as good and probably tops of the drummers who try to play with the BR band who seem to be mere time keepers. BR filled the dead spots and lead ins most tastefully. He drove his band. Weckl did a lot of that but with a more modern approach. His multitude of terrific sounding toms tuned low (and less articulate) mostly. Is that smaller cymbal between the two larger on his right a hat or just something very dry? Whatever. I want one.

This Dave Wack job guy couldn`t hold Buddy Rich`s sticks or sweat rag let alone play the instrument called a percussian "trap set" better than Mr Rich.
Sorry if I offend any or all of you, but fuck you. I`ve seen most of the so called "best" drummers, "played" percussian for 40 yrs until I lost my left arm and to say this dude was/is better, smoother or in a groove better than Buddy Rich is straight up pure bullshit. Very different from Buddy in style, but on an equal level. Hes a product of the bar that Buddy set for all drummers. I think even Buddy would call Dave the best now.
This is one of those feel good summer park songs that are family friendly, played by some 80s cover band with 15 people, half of which merely sway and clap. :)
I saw this guy do a clinic here in Detroit in 90 and it was mind boggling. He told us that at times he practiced for ten to twelve hours a day. Just goes to show, you get out of it what you put into it. This guy is definately in an elite group of drummers. Keep in mind, this was twenty one years ago!!! Amazing stuff....
I love to hear the different styles between artists, how they interpret or fit in to the pice or band. then to see how the art of drumming has evolved for the artists. next, to see how 'tastes' change regarding what drums should do in a piece. then you filter it all through your own taste.

this is LOUSY. the time AIN'T happening. this guy can play a lot of flashy stuff . . but Steve, Omar, Vinny are SUPERIOR when it comes to laying it down. It's men against the boy.
this is actually better than Buddy's version. Dave Weckl isn't hogging the attention with ridiculously fast fills like Buddy Rich did instead he's providing a hell of a groove.
@thehoaxbuster hey pal, thats what made buddy great. relax, everyone has different playing styles, thats what buddy rich did. just let everyone play the way theyre gunna play. odds are no ones gunna change how they play because of your comment, so chill.
@johninis not quite sure if id say the most talented its hard enough in my opinion to even say there is only 1 drummer most talented in the world but i do have to say he is one of the most talented i ever heard
did anyone happen to notice that cymbal hit Weckyl stuck in , in the middle of that roll, right at the very end of this awesome song and performance? Dave if you are out there you are the most amazing drummer in the world--and you knoew what I love? Your expression and intensity as this song comes to a climax tells me you know it. Well, dammit someone should say-you got the groove, the gift...you're everything you hoped you would be when you were a child.
Very nice, I like Weckl a lot. I think this chart was a good choice for him, it suits his playing a lot. If you can ignore the techniquey stuff, you start to realise that he really makes a great sound. Good stuff. I do prefer Adderly's version of this, but Dave's still an absolute master.
ignore what? Every single thing I've listened toit about 100 times--every singlew thing is well planned well orchestrated and yses, he has the groove--he blows all away including rich coluta and peart moon, they all suck compared to this guy--he puts his whole self into his drums--he has the holy spirit
I didn't mean it in a bad way. I just mean that a lot of people watch/listen to Weckl and get hung up on his chops. But as well as that he grooves brilliantly and, even more than that, makes a great sound on the drums. Sound is a lot more than gear! It's down to the individual. I've heard dave sound just like this on a Yamaha hig gig. So when I said ignore, I just meant that I like to think of his sound first, and his chops later.
really. you probably havent listened to many buddy charts... or maybe you dont like buddy's style... but dave weckl does not have any more talent or skill than buddy. buddy was ridiculous (in a good way).
I don't know if I agree with that really...but Dave definitely brings a different set of rules to the table in comparison to Buddy. Both innovators of/in their time. Big difference, in my opinion, Buddy usually singled everything--Dave has un-real control over triplets and doubles. Both of them own the kit like no body's business.
this is a nice arrangement. but i feel like it should be more laid back. the original recordings with cannonball adderly and joe zawinul have a much more soulful vibe, and i think thats better for the song.
Yeah, I was so pissed, before I had ever seen this vid, we played this song in our jazz band, and I played it slap style because it sounded the best for the song, and he was like....ummmm what are you doing, play fingerstyle. I was so pissed.

Wow, the head of our jazz ensemble said If I played this tune using slap bass that would be retarded. I knew this song would sound better with that. Now he is the stupid one.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't know if he's a metal drummer, but I don't like him. He's clean and has extraordinary control, but there's no pocket. It sounds like everything (esp. his snare) is too early. There's no groove. No funk. No soul.
Actually, I don't want to start some sort of argument or anything, but I'm pretty sure funk/groove/soul is a lot about accenting offbeats. (ex: Dave Garibaldi, Steve Gadd, etc) I could be wrong, but that's just what I'm told...
I'm just talking about the pocket. Maybe it's because he's out front instead of next to the rhythm section, but he's not locked in. Or maybe I just don't like his feel. (I like those other cats, btw.)
The only shit thing about Dave Weckl is his haircut. Remember this is a drummers tribute concert. All the drummers on this gig would be sacrificing a bit of straight ahead pocket playing for a bit of flair, fills and big hits, basically cause the drummer is the feature in each chart. Dont get me wrong, less is often more, and it takes skill for a drummer to just lay out a solid feel, but this gig is about letting the drummers show off a bit. (ala like the showman that was Buddy Rich).
Shows how much you know about drumming. You've got to be fucking kidding me dude. How can you not like him. Even if you don't like him, you CANNOT deny that he is extraordinary. He truly is one of the best modern drummers we've got. His playing definitely has soul...
I don't deny that he's extraordinary, but he sounds like a drum machine. And I would say "No" he doesn't compare to Buddy Rich. I listen to Buddy Rich a lot. Buddy Rich has a lot more subtlety, nuance, musicianship, etc. in addition to having a lot of technique.
Who are you to talk like that about Dave weckl? Steve Gadd :-)? On my opinion, he's one of the best drummer of all the time...I respect your opinion but...sincerly, it's very strange...
this song reminds me Psychoctopus solo of Aquiles Priester, good Daveee!! lml

Wow, the head of our jazz ensemble said If I played this tune using slap bass that would be retarded. I knew this song would sound better with that. Now he is the stupid one.

i don't dig the snare sound at all... just sounds too fat and full for me, only a matter of my opinion and nothing else.
