Bill Lee and I produced this for Dick Clark and ABC, live at Santa Monica Civic, as first of a series of late night stereo simulcasts for ABC In Concert. First band I ever recorded and mixed with guys form Wally Heider and Rick Pickonin. They were flawless.
tower of power's best line-up ever! lenny williams was their best voclist ever! nobody touches him! neither can they mess with lenny pickett greg adams or mic gillette! when those guys left it wasnt tower of power anymore! they were so good they couldve been the master james brown's backup band. now put that in your pipe and smoke it a hundred times!
Best group...Lenny singing, Lenny Pickett as 1st sax, Mic Gillette and Greg Adams on trumpets and trombone. Listen to the drums and the bass playing off each other. And of course, Doc and Emilio, the founders...
@1jkeeling Yes, I agree. You see someone come out of nowhere and they are all plastic, not creative. They have to be good looking and be able to dance. It is all stupid.
TOP always better than just 'good'. LP dancin and playin. Dave playin with ferocity OWNING all of these tunes; Mimi soloing; Rocco breakin my damned back bringin me to TEARS with his feel. Too much
Lmao...Pickett was about 17 or 18 years old and kinda accounts for his awesome dancing skillz & immaturity...But none the less nobody on the planet could match his soloing then or now. Rip it up Lenny!
You must not be from Oakland bro, because this is the great Lenny Pickett you are talking about. The baddest tenor player Tower ever had, He did circular breathing, was one of the first to be able to hit super high notes and could do all that while dancing. I saw Lenny walk into the Reno Jazz festival in 1973 late for a performance with Berkeley high school jazz band. He walked up on stage put his sax together took his solo, got a sanding ovation, packed up his horn and left.
I put a "like" on this video but somebody needs to say it / the guy in the black was a negative distraction from the bands performance / Lenny Williams is singing his heart out and he's behind him acting all stupid / like he had ants in his pants / if u can't dance don't make the band look stupid!
This concert was edited to an hour long show and broadcasted on KUTE-FM in Los Angeles a few weeks after the performance, it concludes with one of the baddest versions ever of Knock Yourself Out, sadly about a year ago I accidently tossed the cassette of the broadcast into my condo's incenerator's chute before i could transfer it to a CD
Damn! takes me almost forty years to see this 1973 clip, TOP is God's gift to music lovers. I'm from Singapore and TOP rules back in 1975 then and it still rules now !
Lenny Pickett is wild as hell.... it's funny to see him as the band leader on SNL. I liked GE Smith as the SNL music director but Lenny brings more Horn Power to the Mix........
great stuff

Had the great fortune to see them live numerous times when I was in practice in the Bay Area in the early '70's!

This quality of artistry and raw talent is long gone. Our "top entertainers" today are so manufactured and phoney.
