Kossoff had a loving, supportive family. It was the Pusherman, who stole the show. Brilliance overshadowed. You are never Free while the Candyman is in the shop. Blessed are we, that these moments are captured forever. Long Live Paul Kossoff.
It's amazing that Paul R is not interested in driving the interview. He has total faith in the band being one unit. And the obviously worked hard because they look knackered...
I was 3 yrs old when this interview took place. I was born 15 yrs too late! LOVE FREE! Is it me or do they all sound spaced out like they had been smoking something? X:0)
@ClareStubbs I was negative 10 when this interview took place. Still, Free is just as big a part of my life as if I were around to see them. Free, The Beatles, Zeppelin, Cream....all timeless bands who belong to every generation.
Another example of why bands hated being interviewed. They say there are no stupid questions but I retain that anyone who says that hasn't had to endure being queried by the music press. Just hearing some of the things they ask make me cringe with embarrassment and I'm not even the one going through it!
You can really see how worn out the band was...if only they had a little down time to regroup, what could have been. As it is, none of the splinter groups coming off of Free were a patch on the original lineup. Those that burn brightest, they say.
@sidewaysid I love all these geezers but if Koss AINT on Heroin in this interview then i,m a raving homosexual with two wooden legs BUT real feet. Know wot i mean? All that talent down the pan. Long as he was happy thats what counts.
@sidewaysid Your not trying to pull that old gag over my mince pies son. Ive got numerous Junkie t-shirts and i know when these rock stars have been powdering their noses so to speak!! I can hear them now "Touring constantly really fucks up ya body clock, then theres the jet lag of course". Of course Mr Morrison. And of course theres the birds, the booze, the wonderful variety of drugs, full time partying and inbetween we manage to write a catchy tune now and again!!
@teddybundy118 hey take it easy dude, it's no secret kossof was a huge junky, that's why he died.. but that doesn't make him a terrible person; he just had nobody to turn to, probably was too socially awkward to talk to anybody about his life, so he turned to drugs....I think it's better to remember him as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, not some scumbag heroine junky like your making it sound like.

Free were one of the most talented and exciting bands in the seventies. I saw them live in 1970 at the Eldorado in Leith and they were brilliant. Paul Rodgers' voice is incredible. Paul Kossoff was a fantastic guitarist and lord knows where he would be now. Andy Fraser was and still is a formidable bass guitarist and his guitar sounded like another lead. Simon Kirke is a very unusual and brilliant drummer and is still playing with Paul Rodgers today with Bad Company. They're just superb.
What a great band...on this tour to Oz they were supporting Deep Purple. Wonderful vibe to see them at Sydney. Opening act was local band Piranha, then Manfred Mann's Earth Band, the Free, then DP. The Free album Highway had just come out and some folks were into 'em. but most punters came for DP. Nonetheless, Free were at their best. The largely unresponsive crowd were pulled to their communal feet by Rodgers especially, and the whole band was a as tight as a drum.
@johnnymusician I was there too at Randwick Racecourse. . Free got a great reception. Free and Deep Purple both had had recent hit singles in Australia: Alright Now & Black Night respectively. DP In Rock LP was owned by virtually everyone. Yes, DP were top of the bill because by then they had already a few hits in Australia as in UK and USA while Free were relative newcomers but everyone knew Alright Now . One similarity with LZ & Free was they both covered Booker T & the MGs' The Hunter.
Thanks for posting this, I may be way off but I think thats Germaine Greer doing the interview as she was close to Zep members and I think Paul Grant who managed Zep is in the start of the walking from thr plane Anyway, great band Wishing Well is still killer track all these years later
@thomasnonsense. Yeah, ya right Tommy. Imagine what sort of a frumpy bitch she'd be now - 40 years on. It wouldn't surprise me if the stupid bitch is a fuckin tree hugger down in Tassie or is the grandmother of some puncey faggots who attend a private dick-licking school in Melbourne.
But how about her fucking foresight mate ? - reckons they should just pump out record after record from the studio. The dumb slut must've known something - its just about all they do these days!
I stopped trying to convince the music 'business' to give me a break, and started enjoying the business of playing music for people who want to hear it.
My covers band were resident in a Piccadilly pub for over 10 years....thousands of satisfied tourists...
It is all thanks to guys like these......nobody's EVER asked me to play a Justin Timberlake or Leona Lewis song.
The thing about bands like Free, Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy etc, it was a time when they had to go on the road to get a following, and actually learn how to play, not like now where its handed to talentless nobodys who are tweaked to death in the studio to make them sound good. Music now is just a money making scheme aimed at cloth eared wannabe's. Im sure there are loads of great musicians playing pubs, clubs, etc who will never make good, its just the way it is now, a joke.
dope with dignity. hey everyone was out of it back then. i was there i think, can't remember the late sixties... what an effing wonderful union of talent and understated natures. i heard 'em / seen 'em all. these guys were THE best band ever. period, end of story!! what was i saying? ah yeah, i'll be creepin' on an 'island complilation, next i heard 'fire and water' - great album. pauls "we jump about all over the place" here is hillarious!! he sounds so young, makes me wonder if he ever watches this old material and how he must feel looking back cos he sure has changed these days :-)
LMAO And Looks like him too. That's what I thought. His 1st solo album is the best 'Free' album I've ever heard. Gona U tube it all. I was shocked no one's done it yet. btw do U reckon Michael Jackson's Dad might have..........? Nah impossible lol. What a great vid. Never seen Andy Fraser talk before. He must be about 19 on this
NOT thumbs up or DOWN but I've been in gigging bands before. Try road-weary, not saying nobody smoked or whatever back then but if you're a musician you know what I'm talking about.
You can really hear Paul's Boro accent in this! Excellent! Probably not that long after he left the area. Koss such a sad loss, as I know he woulda just got better and better with age - just like Paul, whose voice is amazing (though maybe wasted in the Queen tribute band - yikes, that oughta set the cat amongst the pigeons....) ;¬)
I went to their Adelaide concert on with Deep Purple and Manfred Mann Earth Band as they became but not billed at the time, all were very good! in fact Free were better than Deep Purple in my opinion.
paul is quite weird here........ like he would rather be anywhere else but there...its quite funny, but as he was only 21 and probably exhausted from the tours i think we can forgive him the moodys!!!!! also he has the great thick northern england accent back then which hes lost a lot of now , a shame, still----we love ya paul! also kos is just soooooo sweet.
Paul thinks she is an idiot for such a stupid question. He is bored with her and gives one short answer then warms up a bit . they are tired but kind to her
By this point Rodgers and Fraser had already decided to split up the band. They had fallen out so badly they hardly ever spoke to each other offstage ... that could just account for his attitude! The other two didn't want the band to break up, especially Koss whose life fell apart without Free.
Yet his English accent is distinctly different from the other guys. Thought it sounded Scottish, kind of. Looked him up and he's from Middlesbrough in the northeast. That figures.
he is from the north east and of his tits by the look of it, but fuck he still has it even now. the voice paul .. oh check out swampfreaks if you like free also from the northeast . try the song ..fell to ground
god paul >how you have changed, i remember being there with you all back stage and Paul R never talking, Paul K talking a far bit, wish he was still here miss ya x Whitefield school Hendon those were the days, it was great to have known you Babs
Great footage of one of my favourite bands of the time,,,the others being Taste, Skid row and not forgetting Patto! By the way, I think stoned used to mean being high on drugs, drink or anything?
Mega unibrow on Paul Rogers! Andy Frasier looks and sounds like 1980's Michael Jackson. Simon Kirke looks and sounds stoned. Paul Kossoff looks normal... his normal.
Sure, I heard of marijuana and it seems like history sure repeats then cause everyone except myself and maybe a few others seemed 'stoned' these days as well...
I love the way the four personality's within the band show themselves.
Kirke; honest yet with depth, Kossoff; fiery, emotional and untamed, Rodgers; blunt yet soothing and Fraser; bouncy and juvenile to the point of innocence. And all these seem to correlate nicely with their performances musically.
All in all just great to hear from some true legends!
Thanks for this clip - really takes me back. Paul Rodger's voice sounds so different then. He has a transatlantic accent now! Best blues singer ever. Keep rocking!
Thanks so much for posting this. They all look absolutely knackered! Great footage of the original line up. Really captures the era. This is a proper band! RIP Paul Kossoff
That interview made me feel so relaxed, their voices are so soporific. What a band though - so talented and although it has been said many times before, underrated
i just liked his response to an otherwise stupid question he answered it exactly how he felt about it.if i would have said it i might have laughed afterwards he kept a straight face.lol
Geee-zue Fookin Christ - they are the most underrated rock band ever. All they play on the radio is "All Right Now" and half the time they attribute it to Bad Company. No one touches Free
In Australia in 1970 it was a bit like those curtains. Kids got kicked out of school if they grew their hair long - it made the papers. Nearly every Australian male wore white blue ringed underpants.
Simon Kirke gets my respect simply for playing so simply but so effectively at the same time. And of course Andy for his legendary performance, especially on Mr. Big. Still the best bass solo I've ever heard.
paul kossoff is soooooo sweet!!!wish id seen them back then but was just a babe....what a sad loss to music that he had to go....he has such a gentle voice and mannerism, shame about the plummy interviewer though!!
Koss was certainly a man of few words but when he said something it was totally to the point and relevant. One of the most original guitarists ever. Nobody since has played like him or even copied him (apart from Snuffy Walden's on-purpose imitations on the last Free stuff).
This reminds me of Vic and Bob's line about Paul Rodgers: that he'd go on stage clean-shaven and have a beard by the time he walked off. Very hairy man, the lad.
the guy on the far right is so sweet! dunno his name. kossoff's dad, david kossoff came to my school years ago and did a performance based on his son - it was brilliant - i didn't know who paul kossoff was then.
Andy is hot.

That's sad now to look back on Paul Kossof he had so much potential. The Backstreet
Crawler stuff was good hard rock. and Andy is H.I.V. positive. It's sad considering he
was the youngest member of this band when
they started back in 1968. It's still great to see
that Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke can still perform Kick Ass Rock and Roll with Bad Co

I wished it was still like this today.
It used to be about the music and the message. Not how you looked.
GD cookie cutters of today couldn't even try and play the music of these days.
On the other hand......the bands back in the day would kill the music of today.
Am I making sense ?
birddoggarton 2 years ago 2
yeah..i agree.....back then it was cool....they had better music...more guitar...now all we have is....power pop and "wanna be" rock stars....

Paul Rodgers as, "Cro-magnon Man !!" ; )

Mega unibrow on Paul Rogers! Andy Frasier looks and sounds like 1980's Michael Jackson. Simon Kirke looks and sounds stoned. Paul Kossoff looks normal... his normal.
Lanny1966 2 years ago
what does stoned mean?
trevorduvall 2 years ago
I was gonna ask the same question. Great upload.
Islwynpaul 2 years ago
It means me.
abrahamlincoln0900 2 years ago
dont know if anyones already answered this but stoned means high on marijuana!!!! everyone was "stoned" in those days :-)
Pussycatfeathers 2 years ago
Sure, I heard of marijuana and it seems like history sure repeats then cause everyone except myself and maybe a few others seemed 'stoned' these days as well...
Not a good way to go...
Thanks for explaining the lingo...

Where on EARTH are people digging these up from?? OK nevermind just keep em comin!

All in all just great to hear from some true legends!

what's the name of the song in the beginning?
hendrick13 3 years ago
It's called Ride on a Pony. There's a great live version of it here on YouTube with my all time favorite Kossoff solo.

"We jump about on stage - all over the place"... lol - fuckin Paul!

i just liked his response to an otherwise stupid question he answered it exactly how he felt about it.if i would have said it i might have laughed afterwards he kept a straight face.lol
wonkavella 3 years ago
Geee-zue Fookin Christ - they are the most underrated rock band ever. All they play on the radio is "All Right Now" and half the time they attribute it to Bad Company. No one touches Free
wolfatnight 3 years ago
You said it... without a doubt the most underrated ever... no mainstream famous rock band wuld want to follow them on stage, EVER, guarantee it.

In Australia in 1970 it was a bit like those curtains. Kids got kicked out of school if they grew their hair long - it made the papers. Nearly every Australian male wore white blue ringed underpants.

Wow!! Paul Rodgers is the GEICO Caveman
Antony2191 3 years ago 2
Simon Kirke gets my respect simply for playing so simply but so effectively at the same time. And of course Andy for his legendary performance, especially on Mr. Big. Still the best bass solo I've ever heard.

paul kossoff is soooooo sweet!!!wish id seen them back then but was just a babe....what a sad loss to music that he had to go....he has such a gentle voice and mannerism, shame about the plummy interviewer though!!
ilovepaulrodgers 3 years ago 3
Koss was certainly a man of few words but when he said something it was totally to the point and relevant. One of the most original guitarists ever. Nobody since has played like him or even copied him (apart from Snuffy Walden's on-purpose imitations on the last Free stuff).
lolzordz666 3 years ago
Angus Young obviously takes alot of influence from him.

This reminds me of Vic and Bob's line about Paul Rodgers: that he'd go on stage clean-shaven and have a beard by the time he walked off. Very hairy man, the lad.
etagloh 3 years ago
the guy on the far right is so sweet! dunno his name. kossoff's dad, david kossoff came to my school years ago and did a performance based on his son - it was brilliant - i didn't know who paul kossoff was then.

Great post, this is why youtube is so good, finding Free interviews from 1970. Thanks.
desantolufc 3 years ago 3
hehe.. Paul with his cookie monster uni-brow.
He was a hell of a singer though - in Free mind you, not that drab corporate rock ensemble which was Bad Company.

..Oh how I wish to pull Paul Kossoff out of that frame and bring him back to life. Ahhhhh.

"We jump about - all over the place" - funny as hell from Paul R

What a treasure. We were privileged to ever hear these guys even play. Could have been born 100 years before. Love them. Always have and always will.
